BACKGROUND: Few comprehensive studies have examined the associations of the ABO blood group with survival outcomes for patients with resected pancreatic cancer, overall and by adjuvant chemotherapy regimens.
METHODS: This multicenter study enrolled 1153 patients with resected pancreatic cancer. The hazard ratios (HRs) for disease-free and pancreatic cancer-specific survival were calculated with adjustment for potential confounders, including KRAS mutation and CDKN2A (p16), TP53, and SMAD4 expression, using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Blood group antigen expression in tumors

We report a case of a patient with high titer anti-H antibody showing broad thermal amplitude and variable reactivities against group A red cells. A 62-year-old Korean female was diagnosed with diffuse large B cell lymphoma involving multiple organs. Her ABO/RhD type was A+ and her genotype was ABO*A.01.01/ABO*O.01.02. Antibody screening test (AST) and antibody identification test (IDT) were strongly positive for all reagent cells. Anti-human globulin (AHG) test revealed an antibody titer of 1:256 for 37 °C phase and trace positivity for poly- and mono-specific C3d. Reactivity was stronger for

AIM: Elevated levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) are often observed in many diseases including colorectal cancer, but this finding is not definite. The aim of our study was to examine the change in VWF multimer distribution in patients with colorectal cancer.
METHOD: We randomly selected nine patients from each of the four Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) stages of colon cancer. VWF antigen (VWF:Ag), VWF-cleaving protease ADAMTS-13 level and factor VIII activity (FVIII:C) were determined. The multimer distribution of VWF was visualized using electrophoretic multimer analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most investigations have revealed that the improvement in early graft survival has not resulted in a corresponding improvement in long-term graft survival. The risk factors for long-term graft survival should be clarified.
METHODS: A single-center experience of 1100 consecutive renal transplant recipients who received kidneys from living donors from 1983 to 1998 was reviewed to clarify the time dependency of risk factors for long-term graft survival. We examined various possible risk factors, including HLA-AB and -DR mismatches, ABO-blood group incompatibility, graft weight, donor

Carbohydrate-binding antibodies play diverse and critical roles in human health. Endogenous carbohydrate-binding antibodies that recognize bacterial, fungal, and other microbial carbohydrates prevent systemic infections and help maintain microbiome homeostasis. Anti-glycan antibodies can have both beneficial and detrimental effects. For example, alloantibodies to ABO blood group carbohydrates can help reduce the spread of some infectious diseases, but they also impose limitations for blood transfusions. Antibodies that recognize self-glycans can contribute to autoimmune diseases, such as Guill

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Living donor liver transplantation is an operation with high morbidity and mortality rates. The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting the short-term outcome after living donor liver transplantation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven adult patients who underwent living donor liver transplantation from September 2001 to December 2014 were included. Short-term post-transplant outcomes were evaluated in terms of the onset of postoperative complications of grade 3a and above (Clavien-Dindo classification) and postoperative 120-day mortality. We report our experience with vincristine-loaded platelet infusion in patients with refractory immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), and Evans syndrome. Ten patients with symptomatic thrombocytopenia and/ or hemolytic anemia who failed to respond to two to six different treatment modalities, including corticosteroids and splenectomy, were treated with infusion of vincristine-loaded platelets. Platelets were harvested by plateletpheresis from a healthy ABO compatible blood donor and incubated with 5 mg vincristine. Excess of vincristine was removed, and platelets we

There is no recommendation regarding the type of induction therapy to use in ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the outcome of ABOi living donor kidney transplant (LDKT) recipients who received either polyclonal antibodies or anti-interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) blockers as an induction agent. All ABOi HLA-compatible patients that received a LDKT between 03/11 and 03/18 in three French transplantation center (Paris Saint-Louis, Paris Necker, and Toulouse) were included in the study. Fifty-eight patients were given polyclonal antibo

BACKGROUND: Because of the severe shortage of suitable deceased donors, ABO-incompatible living donor kidney transplantation (ABOi LDKT) is performed even in pediatric recipients in Japan. We performed pediatric ABOi LDKT using rituximab without anti-A/B antibody removal.
METHODS: Thirteen pediatric recipients (mean age 7.4, range 3.4-15.7, four females) whose baseline anti-A/B IgG titers were ≤ × 64 underwent ABOi LDKT without antibody removal and splenectomy between July 2013 and April 2017 at Toho University. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) was initiated on day - 10. Rituximab (100 mg) was adm

INTRODUCTION: Using rituximab, we have performed successful ABO-incompatible kidney transplantations in recipients without splenectomy as well as in those with high pretransplant anti-A/B antibody titers. A common and increasingly recognized toxicity of rituximab is late-onset neutropenia (LON), defined as unexplained grades III to IV neutropenia occurring at least 4weeks after the last dose of rituximab in the absence of an alternative explanation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between May 2006 and December 2011, 25 patients who received rituximab underwent successful ABO-incompatible kidney transpl

The increasing demand for solid organ transplants has brought to light the need to utilize organs in critical situations despite ABO-incompatibility. However, these transplantations are complicated by pre-existing ABO antibodies which may be potentially dangerous and makes the transplantation prone to failure due to rejection with resulting necrosis or intrahepatic biliary complications. We report the clinical outcome of an emergency ABO-incompatible liver transplant (due to fulminant hepatic failure with sudden and rapidly deteriorating mental status) using a modified therapeutic plasma excha

Norovirus is a major cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans. A norovirus outbreak occurred in Ohio in January 2010. Stool and saliva samples were obtained from six infected individuals. The full-length genomes of two representative strains (HS206 and HS210) were characterized. They belonged to GII.12 in the capsid but GII.g in the RNA polymerase region. Interestingly, an immunocompetent 2-year-old male shed virus for up to 30 days, as detected by real-time reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. Histo-blood group antigen (HBGA) typing of saliva showed that the norovirus strains infected various type

Background and Objectives: Non-O ABO blood groups have been linked to higher coronary risk, plausibly via hemostatic and lipid pathways. However, evidence in Japanese populations and imaging-defined disease is limited. We examined whether ABO status relates to serum lipids and coronary CT imaging findings in Japanese adults. Materials and Methods: We reviewed adults who underwent coronary CT angiography (CCTA) at our institution. After prespecified exclusions, 865 patients comprised the imaging cohort. For lipid analyses, we excluded patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy at the time of blo

UNLABELLED: Pandemics from viral outbreaks, such as that caused by SARS-CoV-2, have significant impacts worldwide. The factors that underlie differential susceptibility to severe COVID-19 outcomes are not fully understood. The role of the ABO blood group in the outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infections remains to be clarified in different populations. This study described the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and examined the association of the ABO blood group with COVID-19 disease among apparently healthy and COVID-19 patients at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra. The study involved 277 participants compr
