Clinical applications of preferential looking measures of visual acuity.

We have undertaken 3 lines of research aimed at the eventual transformation of the laboratory-based preferential looking (PL) acuity-testing procedures into clinically-useful techniques. (1) The first line of research involves studies of the parameters of PL testing, and the establishing of norms for various groups. The results show that acuity development is closely tied to gestational age, that infants' acuity is reduced at low luminances but does not vary significantly at levels above 1 log cd/m2, and that monocular acuity is poorer than previously-published binocular acuity norms. Defining Success in Ptosis Surgery: Outcome Heterogeneity and Priorities for Standardization.

Ptosis surgery aims to restore eyelid position, visual function, facial expression, and, in children, visual development. Yet reported succe … ecific patient-reported outcome measure exists. In children, success depends on visual development, amblyopia prevention, and ocular surface safety rather than eyelid height alone. Most studies assess outcomes within six months, limiting evaluation of recurrence and durability. A core outcome set could improve comparability without imposing a single definit …

Multidisciplinary evaluation confirmed PRS, and amblyopia therapy was initiated with ongoing follow up for progressive facial changes. A rare case of Blepharophimosis-Ptosis-Epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) associated with keratoconus: a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: Blepharophimosis-Ptosis-Epicanthus Inversus Syndrome (BPES) is a rare congenital condition typically associated with mutations in the FOXL2 gene. It is characterized by eyelid malformations and, in some cases, premature ovarian insufficiency. Although visual complications such as astigmatism and amblyopia are well recognized, an association between BPES-like features and keratoconus has not been previously reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 41-year-old Saudi female presenting with progressive visual decline and congenital eyelid abnormalities. Clinical evaluation revealed fea…

Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis: A challenging ocular surface disease.

Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (PBKC) is a chronic and recurrent ocular surface inflammatory disorder affecting children in early li … rates with vascularization and scarring. The latter is a major cause of significant visual loss and amblyopia. Current treatment strategies aim to control inflammation on the ocular surface, halt disease progression, and avoid corneal involvement. Further research on pathogenic mechanisms will shed light on novel potential therapeutic strategies. Awareness …

The aim of this study is to investigate the epidemiology of ophthalmic complications of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) after preterm birth … overall ophthalmic complications was 11.1% and 35.9% among ROP and tROP, respectively. Strabismus, amblyopia, and glaucoma were the three most common complications. The presence of ROP was associated with higher risk of complications (HR 1.53, 95%CI 1.44-1.61) among premature infants, and the presence of treatment for ROP was associated with higher risk of …

Altered Brain Structure and Spontaneous Functional Activity in Children With Concomitant Strabismus.

Strabismus occurs in about 2% of children and may result in amblyopia or lazy eyes and loss of depth perception. However, whether/how long-term strabismus shapes the brain structure and functions in children with concomitant strabismus (CS) is still unclear. In this study, a total of 26 patients with CS and 28 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging examination. The cortical thickness and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were calculated to assess the structural and functional plasticity i…
