One of the complaints of patients with aphakic eyes or pseudophakic eyes implanted with UV or non-UV intraocular lenses (IOLs) is chromatopsia. To determine the extent of color distortion, we measured the spectral sensitivity curve of normal subjects with visual acuity above 1.0 with correction, if any, including subjects implanted with the yellow-tinted IOL (UVCY IOL: HOYA Co.). An aphakic eye with a +9.00 diopter (D) refraction developed high myopia of -13.00 D after applying epikeratoplasty using a +14.00 D lenticule. We preformed photorefractive keratectomy by excimer laser. The procedure was uneventful, with no postoperative pain. Epithelialization occurred as usual. We reviewed the results following trabeculodialysis in 25 eyes of 22 patients with secondary glaucoma due to chronic anterior uveitis. After 1 year, intraocular pressure (IOP) was uncontrolled (greater than 21 mm Hg) in 11 eyes (44%). Trabeculodialysis controlled IOP (less than 21 mm Hg) in 14 eyes (56%), with an average follow up of 52 months (range, 12 to 151 months). Presented was the comparison of early and late complications arising after implantation of the anterior chamber lenses of the type Kelman Omnifit and Pannu. The period of postoperative observations amounted 1-3 years. It was demonstrated that the Pannu lenses are giving less complications; the authors are connecting this fact with an easier operative technique of their implantation and their greater ability of autoadaptation.

Eighty-two consecutive aphakic or pseudophakic retinal detachments were treated by buckling and vitrectomy procedures. Functional results (86.6%) and the incidence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (11%) were comparable with reports of cases treated by the classic method.

Two hundred four consecutive eyes underwent penetrating keratoplasty by a single surgeon using eight interrupted 10-0 monofilament nylon sutures in the cardinal position combined with a continuous 11-0, 16-bite monofilament nylon suture technique. Aqueous and vitreous kinetics were studied after anterior subconjunctival injection of 100 mg of ceftriaxone sodium in phakic and aphakic rabbit eyes. Seventeen patients, ranging in age from 40 to 86 years, developed pupillary block detected one week to three years after intraocular lens implantation. Spectrophotometric measurements indicated that polymethyl methacrylate intraocular lenses do not mimic the crystalline lens in absorption of shortwave visible light and near-UV light. These wavelengths are particularly effective in producing photochemical damage to the retina. Scotopic spectral sensitivity functions directly confirmed that patients with intraocular lens implants are much more sensitive than normal to these wavelengths (by as much as a factor of 46 at 380 nm).

An assessment of the quality of care being provided to meet the needs of postcataract aphakes for refractive correction is presented. The procedure used was a review of patient records originally developed for inpatient care but was here applied to outpatient care in a centralized health facility. This paper demonstrates the feasibility and value of this method of quality assessment.
