Neuronavigation-guided endoscopic and hodotopic approach to an arachnoid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are intraarachnoid benign cystic lesions filled with cerebrospinal fluid and should be treated without incurring further morbidity to the patients. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present a case of a 68-year-old elderly female with a large right fronto-parieto-temporal arachnoid cyst who has been suffering from mild left hemiparesis for the past 4 years and presented with sudden onset of seizures. The 3 Tesla MR system with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and MR tractography of the brain showed a large right fronto-parieto-temporal cystic lesion measuring 7 × 5 × 5 cm

Neural circuits with long-distance axon tracts for determining functional connectivity.

The cortical circuitry in the brain consists of structurally and functionally distinct neuronal assemblies with reciprocal axon connections. To generate cell culture-based systems that emulate axon tract systems of an in vivo neural network, we developed a living neural circuit consisting of compartmentalized neuronal populations connected by arrays of two millimeter-long axon tracts that are integrated on a planar multi-electrode array (MEA). The millimeter-scale node-to-node separation allows for pharmacological and electrophysiological manipulations to simultaneously target multiple neurona

MRI structural connectivity, disruption of primary sensorimotor pathways, and hand function in cerebral palsy.

Brain injury and subsequent plasticity of sensory and corticospinal pathways play an integral role in determining paretic hand function in congenital hemiplegia. There is limited knowledge regarding the relationship between the disruption of sensorimotor thalamic pathways projecting into the primary motor cortex and motor control. This study sought to investigate the relationship between the structural connectivity of motor networks that anatomically link the brain stem with the precentral and postcentral gyri with paretic motor sensory function by using an automated analysis strategy. Determination of low-pass filter cutoff frequencies for high-rate biomechanical signals obtained using videographic analysis.

Diffuse brain injury (DBI) commonly results from blunt impact followed by sudden head rotation, wherein severity is a function of rotational kinematics. A noninvasive in vivo rat model was designed to further investigate this relationship. Due to brain mass differences between rats and humans, rotational acceleration magnitude indicative of rat DBI ( approximately 350 krad/s(2)) has been estimated as approximately 60 times greater than that of human DBI ( approximately 6 krad/s(2)). Prior experimental testing attempted to use standard transducers such as linear accelerometers to measure loadin

Nuclear translocation of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) determines cell fate after hypoxia ischemia in neonatal brain.

The inhibitors of apoptosis (IAPs) are emerging as key proteins in the control of cell death. In this study, we evaluated the expression and subcellular distribution of the antiapoptotic protein X-linked IAP (XIAP), and its interactions with the XIAP-associated factor 1 (XAF1) in neonatal rat brain following hypoxia-ischemia (HI). HI triggered the mitochondrial release of cytochrome c, Smac/DIABLO, and caspase 3 activation. Confocal microscopy detected XIAP-specific immunofluorescence in the cytoplasm under normal condition, which exhibited a diffuse distribution at 6 h post-HI and by 12 h the

Gambling task performance in traumatic brain injury: relationships to injury severity, atrophy, lesion location, and cognitive and psychosocial outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensitivity of the Gambling Test (GT) to the neurocognitive effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to examine the cognitive, neural, and psychosocial correlates of impaired GT performance in patients with TBI. BACKGROUND: The GT is sensitive to behavioral deficits in patients with prefrontal brain damage, especially in ventral regions. Patients with TBI and behavioral deficits often have focal ventral prefrontal damage as well as diffuse damage. Analysis of the correlates of the GT in this population has implications for interpretation of the GT in other group

Hemiconvulsion-Hemiplegia-Epilepsy Syndrome Associated with SARS-CoV-2 Infection and a Heterozygous IRF3 Variant in a 10-month-old Girl: A Case Report.

Hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia-epilepsy (HHE) syndrome is a rare pediatric epilepsy syndrome characterized by prolonged focal febrile seizures, postictal hemiparesis, and progressive unilateral brain injury, often followed by chronic epilepsy. We report a previously healthy 10-month-old girl who presented with a prolonged left-sided focal fever-associated seizure. She tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 but did not meet criteria for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. On admission, she had left-sided flaccid hemiparesis. Brain MRI showed mild diffusion restriction and marked hyperperfusion of

Neuroprotective Effects of GV1001 in Animal Stroke Model and Neural Cells Subject to Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation/Reperfusion Injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies have revealed the diverse neuroprotective effects of GV1001. In this study, we investigated the effects of GV1001 on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in rats and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-induced injury in neural stem cells (NSCs) and cortical neurons. METHODS: Focal cerebral IRI was induced by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Brain diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) was performed 2 hours after occlusion, and a total of 37 rats were treated by reperfusion with GV1001 or saline 2 hours after occlusi

Silent cerebral infarction after thoracic endovascular aortic repair: a magnetic resonance imaging study.

OBJECTIVES: Silent cerebral infarction is the most common brain injury incidentally detected on imaging and can be associated with increased risks of future stroke and cognitive decline. However, the incidence and risk factors of silent cerebral infarction after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for aortic arch pathologies remain unclear. This study aimed to examine silent cerebral infarction following TEVAR using diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Nineteen patients (16 men, mean age 73.3 years) who underwent elective debranching TEVAR (zone 0/1/2 = 3

Exendin-4 induced glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor activation reverses behavioral impairments of mild traumatic brain injury in mice.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) represents a major and increasing public health concern and is both the most frequent cause of mortality and disability in young adults and a chief cause of morbidity in the elderly. Albeit mTBI patients do not show clear structural brain defects and, generally, do not require hospitalization, they frequently suffer from long-lasting cognitive, behavioral, and emotional problems. No effective pharmaceutical therapy is available, and existing treatment chiefly involves intensive care management after injury. The diffuse neural cell death evident after mTBI is

White matter abnormalities are associated with chronic postconcussion symptoms in blast-related mild traumatic brain injury.

Blast-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common injury among Iraq and Afghanistan military veterans due to the frequent use of improvised explosive devices. A significant minority of individuals with mTBI report chronic postconcussion symptoms (PCS), which include physical, emotional, and cognitive complaints. However, chronic PCS are nonspecific and are also associated with mental health disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Identifying the mechanisms that contribute to chronic PCS is particularly challenging in blast-related mTBI, where the incidence of comorbi

Brain stem lesions after head injury.

There is little knowledge on the morphology of the brain stem in survivors of head injury, as CT fails to shown brain stem lesions, and neuropathological data is only available from autopsies. As magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sheds new light on morphological lesions of the brain, the authors investigated 100 patients with a severe head injury. MRI was performed in a prospective study within the first seven days after head injury while the patients were still in coma and on ventilation. Relating the location of the lesions as depicted by MRI with the initial CT scan and outcome, death appear

Brain injury after survived gunshot to the head: reactive alterations at sites remote from the missile track.

Gunshot wounds to the brain usually lead to acute respiratory arrest or death after a brief survival period, even in cases involving only slight direct tissue damage. It can be assumed therefore that the damage extends beyond the zone of recognizable destruction and hemorrhages. To determine the true extent of the tissue injury resulting from gunshot wounds to the brain, we carried out microscopic investigations for reactive changes (emigration of leukocytes and macrophages, axonal expression of beta-amyloid precursor protein (beta-APP) in 10 cases of gunshot wound to the narrow channel of the
