T2-Weighted T1 Mapping and Automated Segmentation of CSF: Assessment of Solute Gradients in the Healthy Brain.

Brain lesions in pediatric abusive head trauma: prevalence, pathophysiology, patterns, and a classification system.

OBJECTIVES: A deeper understanding of extensive brain lesions (EBL) in pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT) could possibly help differentiate AHT from other forms of trauma. Therefore, the aims of the study were (i) to investigate the prevalence and features of AHT-associated EBL in neuroimaging and (ii) to develop a useful classification system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study analyzed cranial CT and/or MRI of medico-legally well-documented AHT cases diagnosed with "shaken baby syndrome" from a 10-year study period with respect to lesions in cerebrum, cerebellum, a…

A taxonomy for superficial cerebral cavernous malformations: subtypes of cortical and subcortical lesions.

OBJECTIVE: A taxonomy for superficial cerebral cavernous malformations (CMs), those based cortically in gyral gray matter or subcortically i … erebral CMs occupy the largest territory of the 7 types, and the size and surface complexity of the cerebrum make taxonomic subtyping valuable for clear anatomical description.

SMPD1 expression profile and mutation landscape help decipher genotype-phenotype association and precision diagnosis for acid sphingomyelinase deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) disorder, also known as Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) is a rare genetic disease caused by m … sitive cells, mesothelial cells of the spleen, vascular endothelial cells of the cerebellum and the cerebrum of fetuses, indicating that SMPD1 dysfunction is highly likely to have a significant effect on the function of those cell types during development and the clinicians need pay attention to these organs or tissues as well during diagnosis. Research progress of IGF-1 and cerebral ischemia.

Cerebral ischemic disease is a group of diseases that cause insufficient blood supply to the cerebrum, cerebellum or brain stem for different reasons, resulting in corresponding nervous system symptoms. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Among them, the death caused by cerebral ischemia accounts for the vast majority, and it is one of the fatal diseases in the middle-aged and elderly at present. Epidemiologic studies have projected increasing mortality due to cardiovascular disease worldwide (about 23.3 million people by 2030) because of the aging population. Ho…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether prenatal Doppler parameters in growth-restricted fetuses are correlated with neonatal circulatory changes … ore birth, are associated with low CRR after birth, indicating relatively greater blood flow to the cerebrum than to the renal region. Based on the results of this study, it could be speculated that if brain sparing is present in the fetal circulation, it persists during the first 3 days after birth. Copyright © 2015 ISUOG. Neurological complications of acquired cobalamin deficiency: clinical aspects.

Neuropsychiatric syndromes occur in about 40% of Cbl-deficient patients and are characterized by progressive and variable damage to the spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebrum. The first abnormality is usually sensory impairment, most often presenting as distal and symmetrical paraesthesiae of the lower limbs and frequently associated with ataxia. Almost all patients demonstrate loss of vibratory sensation, often in association with diminished proprioception and cutaneous sensation and a Romberg sign. Corticospinal tract involvement is common in more advanced cases, with abnormal reflexes,…

[Rupture of intracranial aneurysm due to cerebral angiography (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: The authors report a case of rupture of intracranial aneurysm by angiography which was done four hours after the subarachnoid he … deteriorated and died one week after the operation. AUTOPSY: There was severe edema in both sides cerebrum. The brain stem, especially interbrain, and pons, had fallen into softening, so called respirator brain. This complication of angiography is very rare. This case is the 24th reported case of the ruptured aneurysm by angiography.

Human CLP1 mutations alter tRNA biogenesis, affecting both peripheral and central nervous system function.

CLP1 is a RNA kinase involved in tRNA splicing. Recently, CLP1 kinase-dead mice were shown to display a neuromuscular disorder with loss of motor neurons and muscle paralysis. Human genome analyses now identified a CLP1 homozygous missense mutation (p.R140H) in five unrelated families, leading to a loss of CLP1 interaction with the tRNA splicing endonuclease (TSEN) complex, largely reduced pre-tRNA cleavage activity, and accumulation of linear tRNA introns. The affected individuals develop severe motor-sensory defects, cortical dysgenesis, and microcephaly. Mice carrying kinase-dead CLP1 also

Headaches in the different phases of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: a tendency for stabbing headaches during relapses.

INTRODUCTION: Primary headaches are known to be associated with multiple sclerosis. We aimed to determine headaches using ICHD-II in different phases of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, and the correlation between headaches and several features of the disease. RESULTS: Migraine (41.2%) and tension-type headaches (20.6%) were the most common headaches in remission, and primary stabbing headache (PSH) (27.8%) was common in the relapsing phase. Although headaches seemed to occur independently of disease duration, extended disability status scale, beck depression inventory scores, and trea

Pertussis Toxin Exploits Host Cell Signaling Pathways Induced by Meningitis-Causing E. coli K1-RS218 and Enhances Adherence of Monocytic THP-1 Cells to Human Cerebral Endothelial Cells.

Pertussis toxin (PTx), the major virulence factor of the whooping cough-causing bacterial pathogen Bordetella pertussis, permeabilizes the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in vitro and in vivo. Breaking barriers might promote translocation of meningitis-causing bacteria across the BBB, thereby facilitating infection. PTx activates several host cell signaling pathways exploited by the neonatal meningitis-causing Escherichia coli K1-RS218 for invasion and translocation across the BBB. Here, we investigated whether PTx and E. coli K1-RS218 exert similar effects on MAPK p38, NF-κB activation and transcri
