Polydactyly of the hands or feet is a common birth deformity. We recently encountered a female infant with a case of a crossed type 1 polydactyly with a mixed polydactyly of the feet. A mixed and crossed polydactyly is a rare finding with only one other reported case. This is the first report of crossed and mixed polydactyly of the feet presenting with 7 complete toes on each foot without syndactyly. In addition to a discussion of the treatment, this case has lead us to propose a more complete and less confusing classification system.

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) histologic classification system for thymoma was introduced in 1999, several centers have published results using this system. This review of the published experience with the WHO system examines whether the classification is reproducible, whether the WHO system defines clinically distinct patient groups, assesses the independent prognostic value of the WHO type by multivariate analysis, and discusses the impact of the WHO system on clinical management decisions.

This paper reports the use of a tin dioxide multisensor array based electronic nose for recognition of 29 typical aromas in white wine. Headspace technique has been used to extract aroma of the wine. Multivariate analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA) as well as probabilistic neural networks (PNNs), has been used to identify the main aroma added to the wine. The results showed that in spite of the strong influence of ethanol and other majority compounds of wine, the system could discriminate correctly the aromatic compounds added to the wine with a minimum accuracy of 97.2%.

Distal arthrogryposes are a group of syndromes with congenital contractures primarily involving the hands and feet, which often are associated with abnormal facies, and are transmitted by autosomal dominant inheritance. Many affected individuals present in an orthopaedic setting. The features of these syndromes are described to allow diagnosis, establish prognosis, provide family counseling, and treatment. Increased recognition will lead to improved knowledge of the natural history.
