Businesses are gradually reopening as lockdown measures for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are being relieved in many places across the globe. It is challenging but imperative for businesses to manage the risk of infection in the workplace and reopen safely. Drawing on risky decision-making theory and the job demands-resource model of workplace safety, we examined the influences of employees' COVID-19 risk perception on their safety performance at work. On the one hand, COVID-19 risk perception motivates employees to perform safely; on the other hand, COVID-19 risk perception

Dengue, Zika and chikungunya are diseases of global health significance caused by arboviruses and transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which is of worldwide circulation. The arrival of the Zika and chikungunya viruses to South America increased the complexity of transmission and morbidity caused by these viruses co-circulating in the same vector mosquito species. Here we present an integrated analysis of the reported arbovirus cases between 2007 and 2017 and local climate and socio-economic profiles of three distinct Colombian municipalities (Bello, Cúcuta and Moniquirá). These locations

BACKGROUND: Climate change is amplifying heat exposure worldwide; however, its consequences for global physical inactivity, and the resulting effects on mortality and economic burden, remain unquantified.
METHODS: We analysed a longitudinal dataset spanning 156 countries from 2000 to 2022 using a binned fixed-effects panel regression model. The model examined the relationship between the primary outcome-the age-standardised prevalence of physical inactivity in adults (aged ≥18 years)-and annual exposure to different temperature ranges. Estimated exposure coefficients and climate projections u

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria straminea, an intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, is originally native to Brazil but has invaded southern China since 1974. Nowadays, increasing human mobility raises the risk of S. mansoni dissemination. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the genetic variation and structure of B. straminea in China and develop molecular tools for tracing its geographic origins, which could aid in schistosomiasis prevention and control.
METHODS: We collected 290 B. straminea individuals from Shenzhen City (GDSZ, n = 171), Dongguan City (GDDG, n = 65), and Hong Kong (HK, n =

Tropical cyclone rainfall (TCR) extensively affects coastal communities, primarily through inland flooding. The impact of global climate changes on TCR is complex and debatable. This study uses an XGBoost machine learning model with 19-year meteorological data and hourly satellite precipitation observations to predict TCR for individual storms. The model identifies dust optical depth (DOD) as a key predictor that enhances performance evidently. The model also uncovers a nonlinear and boomerang-shape relationship between Saharan dust and TCR, with a TCR peak at 0.06 DOD and a sharp decrease the

BACKGROUND: The genus Culicoides comprises several vectors of the Bluetongue virus (BTV) affecting livestock and other ruminants. The historical occurrence and recent re-emergence of this disease in Galicia (NW Spain) make it essential to identify the vector species present in the region, determine the factors influencing their abundance, analyse their seasonal activity period and identify areas of highest epidemiological risk.
METHODS: A total of 2009 light-trap collections targeting Culicoides were conducted at representative sites across Galicia between 2008 and 2012. A subset of the 2009

Agriculture is the pillar of Ethiopia's economy, employing over 80% of the population. However, it remains highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Promoting climate-smart agricultural practices is therefore critical. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), a highly nutritious pseudo-cereal with broad adaptability and efficient water use, presents a promising alternative crop for Ethiopia's diverse agro-ecologies. Its tolerance to drought and salinity makes it an ideal candidate for enhancing food and nutritional security under changing climate conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to

Future anthropogenic climate change is likely to increase the air temperature (T(a)) across Europe and increase the frequency, duration and magnitude of severe heat stress events. Heat stress events are generally associated with clear-sky conditions and high T(a), which give rise to high radiant heat load, i.e. mean radiant temperature (T(mrt)). In urban environments, T mrt is strongly influenced by urban geometry. The present study examines the effect of urban geometry on daytime heat stress in three European cities (Gothenburg in Sweden, Frankfurt in Germany and Porto in Portugal) under pres

Urban environments concentrate spatially distributed stressors, including heat, noise, pollution, and biodiversity loss, that are increasingly recognized as determinants of population mental health. However, current approaches rarely integrate environmental structure, lived exposure, and climate-related emotional responses within a unified spatial framework applicable to public health. This article introduces Eco-Affective Health Mapping (EAHM) as a conceptual, spatially explicit framework, grounded in the recently formalized Eco-Affective Health theoretical model, for understanding how enviro

Rice is a staple agricultural resource for over half the global population. Using the data-modeling methods, which account for major biophysical processes and all major environmental and management factors, our study shows that rice production for 2006-2015 has increased by almost 2-fold since the 1960s, despite growing concerns about climate change and other extreme climate event risks. Management practices through the expansion of irrigated and non-irrigated cropping harvested areas and the increased rates of N fertilizer and manure application have helped to maintain higher production rates

Soil is the largest active carbon reservoir in terrestrial ecosystems. The persistence of soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a central role in regulating global carbon cycle and climate change. Iron oxides, with their unique chemical properties, are among the most important mineral phases controlling SOC stabilization. We synthesized current understanding of the mechanisms and drivers of SOC stabilization mediated by iron oxides. We highlighted the association patterns between iron oxides and organic carbon (Fe-OC) across forests, grasslands, and croplands, and explored how biotic and abiotic fac

Estuarine wetlands, particularly salt marshes and mangroves, play a critical role as blue carbon ecosystems, yet their mechanisms of carbon sequestration and emission remain poorly understood. Vegetation type significantly influences soil microbial communities and CO2 dynamics, but comparative studies across wetland types are limited. This study investigates the Minjiang River Estuary wetland to quantify vegetation-driven differences in soil CO2 emissions and carbon-sequestering functional microbiomes among Phragmites australis (salt marsh), Cyperus malaccensis (salt marsh), and Kandelia obova

BACKGROUND: The Lake Victoria Basin (LVB), supporting millions of people across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, is a critical freshwater ecosystem. However, it faces significant One Health challenges, notably urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis, diseases transmitted by Bulinus and Biomphalaria snails, respectively. Climate, topography, environmental and demographic drivers influence snail habitat suitability and distribution, potentially increasing schistosomiasis risks for communities dependent on agriculture, fishing, and water-related livelihoods.
METHODS: This study ap

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) remain a major global public health challenge, with considerable economic and social impacts. Phlebotomine sand flies, the vectors of the protozoan responsible for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), are highly sensitive to climatic and environmental conditions, which define biome characteristics. Brazil has six distinct biomes, offering a unique setting to explore the spatial variability of VL. We identified and compared climatic, environmental, and social variables associated with VL incidence (IncVL) across Brazilian municipalities and within each biome, excluding Pamp

Excess salt loading from watershed landscapes into river systems acts as a chemical stressor in water bodies and can have significant impacts on downstream water quality. High salinity threatens sustainable crop production globally and is especially prevalent in semi-arid and arid regions. However, relatively little research has been conducted to evaluate salt movement and loadings in natural, high-desert catchments in the face of climate change and extreme climate events. In this study, we use the watershed model SWAT and a newly developed salinity module to simulate the mass transport of 8 m

BACKGROUND: Climate variability influences the population dynamics of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits the viruses that cause dengue, chikungunya and Zika. In recent years these diseases have grown considerably. Dengue is now the fastest-growing mosquito-transmitted disease worldwide, putting 40 per cent of the global population at risk. With no effective antiviral treatments or vaccines widely available, controlling mosquito population remains one of the most effective ways to prevent epidemics. This paper analyses the temporal and spatial dynamics of dengue in Mexico during 2000-202

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to blood and body fluids is common among nurses, and incomplete reporting limits occupational surveillance and access to post-exposure assessment. This study estimated underreporting at the nurse level and the proportion of aggregate exposure counts that were unreported, and examined associated individual and workplace characteristics.
METHODS: A census-based analytical cross-sectional survey was conducted between November 2025 and March 2026 among registered nurses at a tertiary infectious disease referral hospital in China, using a structured questionnaire
