In order to evaluate results obtained in Addis Ababa with lipoidal antigen tests for syphilis on 269 human sera, and, if possible, to determine how many positive seroreactors were in fact infected with Treponema pallidum, these sera were sent by air to Copenhagen for re-examination by the VDRL, Kahn, CWRM and TPI tests.Approximately 60% of sera reactive in VDRL tests in Ethiopia were also VDRL-reactive in Copenhagen, and some 75% were TPI-reactive. A homogeneous fluorescence-polarization assay (FPA) was used for the serological diagnosis of bovine brucellosis in México. The assay uses O-polysaccharide prepared from Brucella abortus lipoplysaccharide (20-30 kDa) conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate as a tracer. A case-study on 95 inpatients with hydatid disease admitted to a community hospital in Milan is presented. Clinical records from January 1975 through December 1985 were reviewed. Certain parameters of humoral and cellular immunity induced by attenuated tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Langat virus strains were studied in monkeys. The immunogenic activity of the strains inoculated subcutaneously and intracerebrally was manifested by two processes: synthesis of specific antibody and cellular immune response. The presence of antibodies to BK virus and SV40 was investigated in 63 patients with Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and in 83 apparently healthy subjects from the endemic area. Serum antibodies to BK virus were detected in 95.2% of the former and in 74.7% of the latter, high antibody levels being prevalent in the age groups 41-60 years.
