Modelling Skin Pigmentation Using the Monte Carlo Technique: A Review.

The impact of skin pigmentation on the accuracy of optical biomedical devices has gained increased attention since the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly following evidence of oximetry measurement bias in dark-skinned individuals. Meanwhile, many computational models utilising the Monte Carlo (MC) technique have been developed as a cost-effective and scalable method for investigating these effects. Hence, this review explores the application of the MC technique in modelling skin pigmentation, focusing specifically on how melanin in the epidermis is represented across different studies. First, the

Enhancing public health surveillance: A statistical validation of potential sampling bias in large retrospective vaccine cohorts.

In the context of Global Health, massive administrative datasets have become indispensable tools for health surveillance. However, the sheer scale of Big Data can mask systemic selection biases that standard mathematical adjustments may not fully mitigate. In this study, I propose a methodological audit of a recent large-scale cohort (N = 2,975,035) concerning COVID-19 vaccination and oncological outcomes. By benchmarking the cohort's architecture against national demographic and epidemiological gold standards through single-proportion Z-tests, we identified notable structural divergences. The

Low-dose ionizing radiation exposure and tumor risk: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) arises from medical, occupational, and environmental sources, but cancer risks at low doses remain debated. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses on low-dose-relevant ionizing radiation exposure and observed tumor occurrence. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Epistemonikos for publications through July 2026. Findings were synthesized descriptively by exposure context and cancer type. We assessed methodological quality using AMSTAR 2, classified temporal exposure patterns and dose

Pediatric Developmental Safety Assessment and New Approach Methodologies: US FDA/Triangle CERSI Workshop Report.

Pediatric developmental safety assessment presents distinct challenges in drug development. Children undergo dynamic changes in organ systems and drug disposition pathways during development, and drug-related effects may be delayed or manifested differently than in adults. Pharmacovigilance data, primarily from adults, is not always predictive of the response in children. Historically, juvenile animal studies have been used for nonclinical pediatric drug safety assessments exclusively, but the reduction in animal testing is a goal of public health agencies. To address this concern, the Office

Spatial transcriptomic profiling of porcine tissue microarray detecting subclinical circovirus infection.

Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a key pathogen in pigs that induces host immunosuppression, leading to severe secondary infections such as porcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVAD), resulting in significant economic losses for the swine industry. More recently, it has emerged as a pathogen that needs to be ruled out in porcine xenotransplantation research due to issues related to latent infection. In this study, we established a methodology for distinguishing cell types and detecting the viral transcripts within porcine tissue microarrays using spatial transcriptomics techniques. Rando

The role of inhibition in modeling decision making with spiking neural networks.

Decision making (DM) requires coordination of elementary information processes subserved by a distributed network of brain areas. Computational models help to understand these processes, but most of the existing models focus on simulating only one of the many parallel operations. An existing spiking neural network (SNN) model attempts to simulate DM holistically, however it does not take advantage of the significant role of inhibition at the neural level as a possible mechanism underlying DM. To address this limitation, we propose to examine the impact of neural inhibition on decision strategy

Analysis of Canadian ophthalmologists' age of death between 2000 and 2023: a comparative retrospective cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the lifespan of ophthalmologists in Canada relative to that of other Canadian physicians and surgeons. METHODS: In December 2023, obituaries published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) from 2000 to 2023 were manually collected. A Python program was created to collect age at death, physician speciality, and year of death from each obituary. The full methodology is described in our pilot study [1]. A univariate general linear model was employed to evaluate the relationship between medical speciality and average age of death. M

Comparison of recommendations for initial adult traumatic brain injury management across clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. We conducted a scoping review to identify, map, and compare recommendations for the initial medical management of adult TBI. METHODS: Following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR, we searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, guideline repositories, and gray literature for English or Spanish language documents published from 2010 to 2026. Two reviewers independently screened records, charted recommendations across domains, and rated agreement using a priori categories; discrepancies

Modelling children's grammar learning via caregiver feedback in natural conversations.

Many debates in the language acquisition literature have revolved around the role of negative evidence for the acquisition of grammar. The scientific study of this question has not been settled with traditional research methods, given that it requires handling children's natural social interaction while controlling for the specific role of error-contingent feedback, independent of other types of input. Here, we leveraged computational modelling to test whether there are learning gains in grammar induced by caregivers' feedback above and beyond learning from input alone. More specifically, we c

Unifying the spectrum: a framework for the meta-analysis of human skin tone scales.

SIGNIFICANCE: Quantification of human skin tone is fundamental to dermatology, medical imaging, computer vision, and social studies. However, the field currently lacks a standardized framework, relying on fragmented methodologies, from the Fitzpatrick skin phototype (FST) to the Monk skin tone (MST) scale. Even nowadays, this creates barriers to scientific progress and introduces systemic errors and bias in medical devices and AI fairness. AIM: The aim of this study is to establish a meta-analytic framework, termed a "scale of scales," to critically assess and quantitatively compare the inter

Simulation-Based Trajectory for Non-Planar Scaffold Printing on Irregular Patches Using Robotic Arm.

This study proposes a reproducible and accessible methodological framework for non-planar path generation to enable scaffold biofabrication on irregular anatomical surfaces replicating the native morphology of human tissue. By integrating a simulation-based trajectory optimization system with a robotic arm, lattice paths are generated using an intersection-based method with parallel planes. This method is processed by intersecting the anatomical object with orthogonal planes, allowing for the creation of paths that conform to complex geometries. The proposed approach relies on widely available

High-throughput prediction of fabric-air partition and diffusion coefficients for indoor organic compounds: A QSPR modeling framework.

Fabric materials serve as both significant sinks and secondary emission sources for organic pollutants in indoor environments. Accurately determining their mass-transfer parameters is essential for assessing indoor pollutant fate and exposure risk. However, existing measurement methods are time-consuming and costly, and available predictive models are limited to single parameters, constraining prediction efficiency and accuracy. This study develops a dual-parameter QSPR framework for the unified prediction of the apparent diffusion coefficient (Dm) and fabric-air partition coefficient (Kfa) of

Green Recovery of Rosmarinic Acid via Whey Soy Protein-Mediated Foam Fractionation: Molecular Mechanisms and Enhanced Antioxidant Activity.

The sustainable isolation of nonamphiphilic phytochemicals remains a formidable challenge in biochemical engineering. In this study, a highly efficient and solvent free foam fractionation process was developed for recovering rosmarinic acid from botanical extracts. By systematically screening diverse biological surfactants, whey soy protein emerged as an exceptionally robust dual functional frother and nanoscale collector. Response surface methodology optimized the operational parameters to 850 mg/L protein concentration, pH 2.5, and a gas flow rate of 470 mL/min, yielding an outstanding targe

Advancing Translational Phenotyping of Mouse Models for Psychiatric Research by Automated Home-Cage Monitoring.

The translational validity of animal models in psychiatric research remains a persistent challenge, partly due to reliance on short-duration, experimenter-driven behavioural assays that capture limited and often artificial snapshots of complex phenotypes. Home-cage monitoring (HCM) systems offer a paradigm shift by enabling continuous, non-invasive assessment of mice within their familiar social and environmental context. These approaches facilitate longitudinal quantification of behavioural domains highly relevant to psychiatric disorders, including circadian rhythm disruption, social interac

The emerging role of microbiota in neuro-oncology.

Primary and metastatic brain tumours are associated with poor clinical outcomes, largely owing to limited therapeutic advances and an incomplete understanding of brain tumour biology. Increasing evidence suggests that microbial communities play an important part in shaping systemic immunity and tumour biology. Microbes and microbial by-products from the gut and oral cavity can influence the central nervous system through the gut-oral-brain axis, providing potential mechanisms by which distant microbes shape the brain tumour microenvironment. A growing body of literature has identified distinct

TF-DWGNet: a directed weighted graph neural network with tensor fusion for multi-omics cancer subtype classification.

Integration and analysis of multi-omics data provide valuable insights for improving cancer subtype classification. However, such data are inherently heterogeneous, high-dimensional, and exhibit complex intra- and inter-modality dependencies. Graph neural networks provide a principled framework for modeling these structures, but existing approaches often rely on prior knowledge or predefined similarity networks that produce either undirected or unweighted graphs, failing to capture task-specific directionality and interaction strengths. Interpretability at both the modality and feature levels

Deciphering optical coupled resonant systems with physics-data co-driven deep neural networks.

Coupled mode theory (CMT) is a universal method for studying resonant systems in various disciplines in science. Combined with traditional fitting methods, implicit physical parameters of the resonant systems can be revealed. However, this methodology fails in tackling the scenario of multi-solution for a given resonant system, resembling a fundamental challenge that has not been addressed yet. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a CMT physics and data co-driven deep neural network (CMT-NN) that can predict the implicit physical parameters of complex resonant systems in a r

N-Myristoylation: A Central Hub Integrating Tumor Signaling, Metabolism, and Immunity for Precision Therapy.

Lipid modifications are critical for membrane anchoring and signal transduction. N-myristoylation, catalyzed by NMT1/2, irreversibly attaches myristic acid to N-terminal glycine residues, enabling stable membrane localization and crosstalk with other post-translational modifications. This review traces NMT research from structural characterization to substrate profiling, highlighting the ordered double-substitution catalytic mechanism and variations in substrate recognition. While prior reviews have covered NMT biochemistry and innate immunity, we emphasize underappreciated roles of N-myristoy

Alternative graph-4-yne stacking fashion: toward selective CO2 capture.

In the present study, we investigate the stacking configurations of bilayer and trilayer graphtetrayne, a promising carbon-rich two-dimensional material derived from graphene, by integrating literature-reported structures with a synergistic computational approach that combines classical molecular dynamics and ab initio calculations. The classical molecular dynamics simulations are performed adopting the improved Lennard-Jones (ILJ) formulation of the potential, a crucial choice to easily explore the configurational space identifying low-energy arrangements followed by a more precise investigat
