BACKGROUND: The best space maintainer in both primary and mixed dentition is the primary tooth itself. This is not only because of the clinical crown but also due to the presence of the roots and periodontium that guide the eruption of the permanent tooth. Although over the years many materials have been tried for obturation of pulpectomized primary teeth, no material has been found to fulfill all requirements. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic efficiency of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), zinc oxide-ozonated oil, antioxidant mix, and probiotic mix in root ca

Background: Orthodontic treatment involves moving teeth within the alveolar ridge. Bone remodeling is associated with the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Procedures such as corticotomy-assisted orthodontic therapy (CAOT) or periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) are intended to reduce bone density and negative stress on the grip side and therefore limit bone resorption during orthodontic movement or add bone substitute material so that the tooth does not cross the vestibular plate. Methods: The study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting It

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has become widespread in diagnosing impacted teeth in the context of orthodontic treatment. However, the diagnostic accuracy of this 3D imaging tool has not been comprehensively evaluated yet. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of employing CBCT imaging in the three-dimensional (3D) localization of maxillary impacted canines compared to the use of traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging, and (2) to calculate sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy values for specific variables assessed

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In 1976, Coenraad F.A. Moorrees completed a series of facial mesh diagrams to ease the orthodontic diagnosis and treatment of North-American patients. Subsequently, the system was adapted by different authors to other races and populations. The objective of this study is to provide a system of Moorrees-like mesh diagrams for the Romanian population, Caucasian race, which would help orthodontists, surgeons and prosthetists.
METHODS: 40 patients were introduced in the study, 20 males and 20 females, with ages between 12-33 years, permanent dentition and slight dental-maxill

It is contentious whether size variation among mammalian teeth is heterogeneous or homogeneous, whether the coefficient of variation is reliable, and whether the standard deviation of log-transformed data and the residual of standard deviation on mean variable size are useful replacements for the coefficient of variation. Most studies of tooth size variation have been on mammals with complex-crowned teeth, with relatively little attention paid to taxa with simple-crowned teeth, such as Pinnipedia. To fill this gap in knowledge and to resolve the existing controversies, we explored the variatio

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD; MIM 119600) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia characterised by hypopalstic and/or aplastic clavicles, midface hypoplasia, absent or delayed closure of cranial sutures, moderately short stature, delayed eruption of permanent dentition and supernumerary teeth. The molecular pathogenesis can be explained in about two-thirds of CCD patients by haploinsufficiency of the RUNX2 gene. In our current study, we identified a novel and rare variant of the RUNX2 gene (c.181_189dupGCGGCGGCT) in a Japanese patient with phenotypic features of CCD. The insertion led an a

Dental fluorosis occurs as a result of excess fluoride ingestion during tooth formation. Enamel fluorosis and primary dentin fluorosis can only occur when teeth are forming, and therefore fluoride exposure (as it relates to dental fluorosis) occurs during childhood. In the permanent dentition, this would begin with the lower incisors, which complete mineralization at approximately 2-3 years of age, and end after mineralization of the third molars. The white opaque appearance of fluorosed enamel is caused by a hypomineralized enamel subsurface. With more severe dental fluorosis, pitting and a l

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to assess the relationship between radiopaque landmarks and central papilla presence and height. The probability of the presence of a central papilla has been related to the bone crest-contact point distance. Papilla height has been measured by inserting a dental probe under local anesthesia, but this method is invasive. It would be desirable to assess the influence of other dental landmarks on the presence and height of the papilla and to use a non-invasive method for measurement of papilla height that is simple, accurate, and accepted readily by patients.

Nasomaxillary abnormalities in form, position, and development in children are often prominent features of craniosynostosis, and in particular, craniofacial dysostosis. While attempting to quantitatively assess the volumetric maxillary deficiency in these patients, it became apparent that there was no "normal" reference range for maxillary volumes throughout childhood that could be used for comparison. The aim of this study was to generate a model for measuring maxillary volume and subsequent changes throughout childhood. The technique of segmentation was applied to magnetic resonance images o

INTRODUCTION: A unilateral Class II relationship could arise due to early loss of an upper second deciduous molar on one side during the mixed dentition period. This would allow the mesial drift of the molars, which may block the eruption of the second premolar.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 15-year 8-month-old male patient presented with a Class II molar relationship on the right, and Class I canine and molar relationship on the left side. His E was extracted when he was 5 years old. The 54 were impacted and the 3 was ectopically positioned due to the space loss from the mesial migration of the 76.

BACKGROUND: Dental sealants are used to caulk fissures and pits in order to prevent caries development both in deciduous and permanent dentition. Loss of sealant integrity leads to the formation of marginal gaps, consequently increasing the risk of caries.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the physicochemical and clinically relevant properties of 3 commercially available resin-based pit and fissure sealants: Arkona Fissure Sealant (AFS; Arkona, Nasutów, Poland), Flow-Color (FC; Arkona, Nasutów, Poland) and Flow-It ALC (FIA; Pentron, Orange, USA).
