Study of bone-tendon interface healing in an animal model using a synthetic scaffold and PRP.

PURPOSE: Biological matrices have been used to reinforce large rotator cuff tear repairs. However, rapid resorption and initial immune reactions presented challenges in clinical practice. This study evaluates whether a resorbable synthetic matrix (scaffold), used alone or with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), impacts repair processes at microscopic, ultrasound, and biomechanical levels in a rabbit model of induced tendon-bone interface injury. METHODS: An experimental study was performed on 24 rabbits. Two experimental groups (n = 12 each) and a control group (n = 24) were defined. In the first gr

In vivo revascularization and tissue effects of uterine artery embolization with starch microspheres in sheep.

OBJECTIVE: In uterine artery embolization (UAE) for the treatment of fibroids, nondegradable particles permanently occlude the uterine artery (UA). These particles remain in the vessels and can cause secondary undesirable effects, such as severe pain after embolization and fertility issues. In this prospective experimental study, we aimed to evaluate the angiographic recanalization, local and systemic reactions, and uterine damage occurring after performing UAE with newly developed degradable starch microspheres (DSMs) in sheep. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under general anesthesia, eight nonpregna

Remote Outcomes with Poly-ε-Caprolactone Aortic Grafts in Rats.

Poly-ε-caprolactone ((1,7)-polyoxepan-2-one; PCL) is a biodegradable polymer widely used in various fields of bioengineering, but its behavior in long-term studies appears to depend on many conditions, such as application specificity, chemical structure, in vivo test systems, and even environmental conditions in which the construction is exploited in. In this study, we offer an observation of the remote outcomes of PCL tubular grafts for abdominal aorta replacement in an in vivo experiment on a rat model. Adult Wistar rats were implanted with PCL vascular matrices and observed for 180 days. Th

MRI in detecting facial cosmetic injectable fillers.

BACKGROUND: Despite being considered a non-invasive procedure, injections can cause adverse outcomes including infections, overfilling, asymmetry, foreign body granulomas, and reactions that lead to scarring. Complications may be associated with the procedure itself, the physician's technique, and/or the type of agent injected. In these instances, it is important to be able locate and identify the substance used. This study investigated the viability of using MRI to correctly identify injected substances, their symmetry of distribution, and related complications. METHODS: Fourteen patients wi

Gelatin Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Composite 3D Printed Semi Biological Mesh for Abdominal Hernia Treatment.

Hernia is characterized by the protrusion of organs or tissue through weakened areas in the abdominal cavity wall. A common treatment for hernia involves the implantation of a mesh which promotes the growth of new tissue around or within the implanted material in the damaged area. The mesh is typically made from synthetic materials like polypropylene. However, such meshes have safety concerns like biofilm and scar tissue formation, foreign body reactions, and chronic pain. These concerns gave rise to the development of biological meshes. Owing to mechanical weakness, biological meshes fail due

Toxicity prediction and classification of Gunqile-7 with small sample based on transfer learning method.

Drug-induced diseases are the most important component of iatrogenic disease. It is the duty of doctors to provide a reasonable and safe dose of medication. Gunqile-7 is a Mongolian medicine with analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. As a foreign substance in the body, even with reasonable medication, it may produce varying degrees of adverse reactions or toxic side effects. Since the cost of collecting Gunqile-7 for pharmacological animal trials is high and the data sample is small, this paper employs transfer learning and data augmentation methods to study the toxicity of Gunqile-7. Investigating the Relationship Between the Emulsification Parameters and Physical-Chemical Properties of Poly(D,L-lactic acid) Particles for Dermal Fillers.

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D,L-lactic acid) (PDLLA) particles have been applied as dermal fillers for soft-tissue augmentation because they can induce foreign-body reactions, resulting in fibroblast proliferation and collagen formation. Although PLLA and PDLLA fillers are safe and biocompatible, clinical complications such as nodules and granulomas have been reported, possibly due to incomplete reconstitution. PDLLA particles were prepared via emulsification in this study, and three stirring speeds were investigated when adding PDLLA into carboxymethyl cellulose solution. The particle…

Comparative Analysis of Mechanical Properties and Microbiological Resistance of Polyfilament and Monofilament Suture Materials Used in the Operation "Tooth Extraction".

In surgical dentistry, suture material is the only foreign body that remains in the tissues after surgery, and it can lead to several negative reactions, for example, infection of the wound. The purpose of this study was to compare the mechanical properties and microbiological resistance of mono- and polyfilament suture materials used in tooth extraction operations. The study of elongation and knot force was carried out on an Instron 5969 Dual Column Testing System device. The capillarity of the materials was studied on a setup assembled by the authors manually by immersing the ends of the fil

Rapidly Self-Deactivating and Injectable Succinyl Ester-Based Bioadhesives for Postoperative Antiadhesion.

Postoperative adhesion not only causes severe complications for patients but also increases their economic burden. Injectable bioadhesives with adhesiveness to tissues can cover irregular wounds and stay stable in situ, which is a promising barrier for antiadhesion. However, the potential tissue adhesion caused by bioadhesives' indiscriminate adhesiveness between normal and wounded tissue is still a problem. Herein, by using poly(ethylene glycol) succinimidyl succinate (PEG-SS) and gelatin, a succinyl ester-based bioadhesive (SEgel) was fabricated with self-deactivating properties for postoper

Recent advances in immunotoxicity and its impact on human health: causative agents, effects and existing treatments.

BACKGROUND: A strong immune system is a primary requirement to keep the body safe from different ailments and infections. A human knowingly or unknowingly often comes to the exposure of many foreign substances such as pollutants, chemicals, metals and drugs that affect the immune system. Though some of these substances are known to exert immunotoxicity, their precise role as immunotoxicant is still unidentified, hence, the testing of these substances has to be taken into account. The present manuscript aimed to explore the mechanism behind immunotoxicity, biomarkers involved, manifestations, t

[The prospects for the use of drugs based on the phenomenon of RNA interference against HIV infection].

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is currently one of the most pressing global health problems. Since its discovery in 1978, HIV has claimed the lives of more than 35 million people, and the number of people infected today reaches 37 million. In the absence of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV infection is characterized by a steady decrease in the number of CD4+ T-lymphocytes, but its manifestations can affect the central nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine and genitourinary systems. At the same time, complications induced by representatives of pathogenic and opp

A Safe, Fibrosis-Mitigating, and Scalable Encapsulation Device Supports Long-Term Function of Insulin-Producing Cells.

Encapsulation and transplantation of insulin-producing cells offer a promising curative treatment for type 1 diabetes (T1D) without immunosuppression. However, biomaterials used to encapsulate cells often elicit foreign body responses, leading to cellular overgrowth and deposition of fibrotic tissue, which in turn diminishes mass transfer to and from transplanted cells. Meanwhile, the encapsulation device must be safe, scalable, and ideally retrievable to meet clinical requirements. Here, a durable and safe nanofibrous device coated with a thin and uniform, fibrosis-mitigating, zwitterionicall

The Munich outbreak of cutaneous cowpox infection: transmission by infected pet rats.

Cowpox virus infection of humans is an uncommon, potentially fatal, skin disease. It is largely confined to Europe, but is not found in Eire, or in the USA, Australasia, or the Middle or Far East. Patients having contact with infected cows, cats, or small rodents sporadically contract the disease from these animals. We report here clinical aspects of 8 patients from the Munich area who had purchased infected pet rats from a local supplier. Pet rats are a novel potential source of local outbreaks. The morphologically distinctive skin lesions are mostly restricted to the patients' necks, reflect
