BACKGROUND: To describe the mechanism and non-invasive management of pupillary block and secondary angle closure caused by posterior migration of an anterior chamber air bubble following deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK).Material and method: A case report.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old male with advanced keratoconus underwent DALK. On postoperative day 1, he developed pupillary block and secondary angle closure due to an air bubble that had migrated from the anterior to the posterior chamber. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was elevated, and the anterior chamber was shallow. Conservati

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlations between choroidal parameters and primary angle-closure suspect (PACS) in different age subgroups.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Participants aged 50 years or older in a rural area of Daxing District, Beijing, were recruited. Swept-source optical coherence tomography was used to measure the choroidal parameters. Demographic, ocular biometry parameters and choroidal parameters were compared between the PACS and non-PACS (NPACS) eyes. Logistic analysis was performed to explore the association between the choroidal parameters and PACS.
RESULTS: 192 (26.89%) sub

This paper aimed to present a relatively frequent misinterpretation of a migraine with visual aura. Sometimes, patients with aura and migraine are referred to the ophthalmologic unit with the diagnosis of acute angle closure attack. Thus, we discussed the way an ophthalmologist could make a difference between these two entities.

PURPOSE: Canine primary closed-angle glaucoma (PCAG) is a complex disease caused by multiple genetic factors. A c.590G>A variant in OLFML3 was recently reported to be a candidate for pectinate ligament abnormality (PLA) and PCAG in the Border Collie. We investigated the association of this variant with PLA and PCAG in Border Collies from the United Kingdom.
METHODS: The OLFML3 variant was genotyped in 106 Border Collies comprising 90 with normal eyes (controls) and 16 with PLA (n = 11) and/or PCAG (n = 5) (cases). Genotyping was performed in an additional 103 Border Collies to estimate varian

Ocular traumas represent a major public health problem with poorly understood ramifications at both the individual and community levels. Any of the ocular structures can be damaged in the case of closed globe injury. These lesions, often multiple, may appear immediately or in a delayed fashion. Classifications have been developed recently in order to better inform the patient of the visual prognosis. However, significant efforts are still needed, on the one hand, to assess and develop new therapies, and on the other hand, to implement effective policies to prevent ocular trauma.

Nephropathia epidemica (NE) caused by Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) is a mild variant of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which is endemic in Germany. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man initially presenting with acute bilateral angle-closure glaucoma, an atypical clinical presentation of PUUV infection. Subsequently, the patient developed a severe course of disease additionally complicated by profound hepatitis and interstitial nephritis, both phenomena which are rarely described in association with hantavirus infection. Serologic diagnosis was complicated by delayed antibody product

We present a case of epithelial ingrowth that progressed despite repeated intracameral injections of fluorouracil (5-FU). Six months after cataract surgery, a retrocorneal membrane was found advancing from the corneal section. At 1 year, 0.5 mg of 5-FU in 0.1 mL of balanced salt solution was exchanged for 0.1 mL of aqueous. Ingrowth initially stopped, but progressed 6 months later. Two further injections of 0.5 mg of 5-FU were given at 1-month intervals, followed by 1 mg of 5-FU 3 and 6 months later. Each injection initially halted progression of the ingrowth, but then it recurred. Ultimately,

Plateau iris syndrome is considered to be a rare entity and has been classified into two subtypes, the complete and the incomplete forms. Herein a case is reported of plateau iris syndrome that had a postmydriatic rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) in one eye (complete syndrome) and no increase in IOP in the other (incomplete syndrome). The pre- and post-mydriasis ultrasound biomicroscopic findings were documented. These findings suggest that incomplete plateau iris syndrome may be caused by a difference in the extent of closure of the angle circumferentially over the 360 degrees of the angle.

The aim of this prospective study has been to evaluate effectivity of laser peripheral iridoplasty (ALPI) as a first choice therapy for intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction in acute primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). The study included 12 patients with the first attack of acute glaucoma in whom IOP in spite of continuing medical therapy for 12 hours persisted at the level of 5.32 kPa (40.0 mmHg) and higher. We used Argon laser manufactured by HGM E-005. Laser parameters were: spot size 300-500 um, time 0.2-0.5 s, intensity 300-500 mW. Laser burns were placed to the whole circumference of t

PURPOSE: To report the case of an extremely large overhanging bleb, extending from superior fornix to limbus, in a 57-year-old poorly controlled diabetic, six years after trabeculectomy for an uncontrolled primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) with recurrence, months after complete excision.
METHODS: An overhanging bleb is defined as a filtering cicatrix which has been massaged downward over the cornea by eyelid action. It has been linked to anti-metabolite use during glaucoma filtering surgery. Despite being functional, these blebs result in patient discomfort ranging from foreign body sensatio

Background Trabeculectomy, with the application of mitomycin C (MMC), has been the gold standard glaucoma-filtering surgery. The conventional method of applying MMC using soaked sponges does not ensure a controlled amount of delivery of MMC, and incidences of blebitis are reported to be associated with leftover sponges. This study aims to assess the safety and efficacy of a low dose (0.1 mg/ml) of MMC administered through subtenon injection during trabeculectomy combined with cataract extraction, addressing existing research gaps. Methods It is a prospective interventional study on patients wh

PURPOSE: To compare refractive prediction errors between phacotrabeculectomy and phacoemulsification.
METHODS: Refractive prediction error was defined as the difference in spherical equivalent between the predicted value using the Barrett Universal II formula and the actual value obtained at postoperative one month. Forty-eight eyes that had undergone phacotrabeculectomy (19 eyes, open-angle glaucoma; 29 eyes, angle-closure glaucoma) were matched with 48 eyes that had undergone phacoemulsification by age, average keratometry value and axial length (AL), and their prediction errors were compar

We report an unusual case of Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome with secondary glaucoma managed with Ologen(®) implant. A 35-year-old male presented with complaints of decreased vision in both eyes of 22 years duration. His best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was no perception of light in right eye and 20/30 in left eye. Gonioscopy revealed anterior insertion of iris into trabecular meshwork, prominent iris processes and broad-based synechiae with prominent Schwalbe's line along the angle circumference with cord-like structures taking its origin at the level of Schwalbe's line in both eyes.
