Breast Density Analysis Using an Automatic Density Segmentation Algorithm.

Breast density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer. In this paper, we present an automated approach for breast density segmentation in mammographic images based on a supervised pixel-based classification and using textural and morphological features. The objective of the paper is not only to show the feasibility of an automatic algorithm for breast density segmentation but also to prove its potential application to the study of breast density evolution in longitudinal studies. The database used here contains three complete screening examinations, acquired 2 years apart, of 130 different

Three-dimensional localization versus fluoroscopically only guided ablations: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Data regarding efficacy and safety of three-dimensional localization systems (3D) are limited. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized trials comparing combined fluoroscopy- and 3D guided to fluoroscopically-only guided procedures. DESIGN: A systematic search was performed using multiple databases between 1990 and 2010. Outcomes were acute and long-term success, ablation, procedure and fluoroscopic times, radiation dose (RD), and complications. RESULTS: Thirteen studies involving 1292 patients were identified. 3D were tested against fluoroscopic guidance in 666 patients for su

Enhancement of hidden structures of early skin fibrosis using polarization degree patterns and Pearson correlation analysis.

The skin of athymic nude mice is irradiated with a single dose of x-ray irradiation that initiated fibrosis. Digital photographs of the irradiated mice are taken by illuminating the mouse skin with linearly polarized probe light of 650 nm. The specific pattern of the surface distribution of the degree of polarization enables the detection of initial skin fibrosis structures that were not visually apparent. Data processing of the raw spatial distributions of the degree of polarization based on Fourier filtering of the high-frequency noise improves subjective perception of the revealed structure

Renal sonographic findings of type I glycogen storage disease in infancy and early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Type I glycogen storage disease (GSD-I) is an inherited disorder affecting glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. The characteristic manifestations are hepatomegaly, hypoglycemia, hyperlacticacidemia, hyperuricemia, and hyperlipidemia. Renal disease is regarded as a long-term complication and is reported mainly in older patients. OBJECTIVE: We report the renal manifestations and renal ultrasonographic findings of GSD-I in infancy and early childhood in order to assess the role of renal sonography in the diagnosis of GSD-I. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our hospi

SegQC: a segmentation network-based framework for multi-metric segmentation quality control and segmentation error detection in volumetric medical images.

Quality control (QC) of structures segmentation in volumetric medical images is important for identifying segmentation errors in clinical practice and for facilitating model development by enhancing network performance in semi-supervised and active learning scenarios. This paper introduces SegQC, a novel framework for segmentation quality estimation and segmentation error detection. SegQC computes an estimate measure of the quality of a segmentation in volumetric scans and in their individual slices and identifies possible segmentation error regions within a slice. The key components of SegQC

Myofiber ellipticity as an explanation for transverse asymmetry of skeletal muscle diffusion MRI in vivo signal.

Due to its unique non-invasive microstructure probing capabilities, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) constitutes a valuable tool in the study of fiber orientation in skeletal muscles. By implementing a DTI sequence with judiciously chosen directional encoding to quantify in vivo the microarchitectural properties in the calf muscles of three healthy volunteers at rest, we report that the secondary eigenvalue is significantly higher than the tertiary eigenvalue, a phenomenon corroborated by prior DTI findings. Toward a physics-based explanation of this phenomenon, we propose a composite medium mod

A comparison of modern imaging modalities in osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Eleven symptomatic and seven asymptomatic patients, considered to be at high risk of osteonecrosis of the hip, were studied using plain radiography, scintigraphy, computed tomography (CT) with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to determine the precise roles of the various imaging modalities in detecting and staging femoral head osteonecrosis, and to evaluate the incidence in an asymptomatic high-risk patient group. Osteonecrosis was best detected by MRI and was particularly useful for the diagnosis of early disease when other imaging modalities were negati

Mamba‑MFNet: A hierarchical supervised network based on the fusion of axial and cross-modal attention for breast DCE‑MRI tumor segmentation.

Early detection and accurate segmentation of breast cancer are critical for improving cure rates and optimizing treatment strategies. However, existing 3D segmentation methods face significant limitations in global context modeling and efficient multimodal feature fusion. To address these challenges, this study proposes Mamba‑MFNet, a 3D breast tumor segmentation framework based on a state-space model, which introduces three key innovations. First, a cross-modal attention mechanism dynamically fuses six DCE-MRI temporal modalities with one breast anatomical mask and adaptively adjusts the cont

BundleWarp: Enhancing white matter tractometry and morphometry with precise neuronal mapping using streamline-based nonlinear registration.

Tractometry analysis represents a significant advancement in neuroimaging, offering a detailed examination of the brain's white matter at a micro level. Unlike traditional ROI or voxel-based methods, tractometry precisely reconstructs and characterizes white matter tracts. Using advanced diffusion MRI and tractography algorithms, it maps the trajectory, shape, and connectivity patterns of individual white matter bundles. Accurate alignment of these tracts across different groups is crucial for reliable and reproducible results. Nonlinear registration techniques are essential for achieving this

Clinical evaluation of deep learning-accelerated 3D FLAIR imaging at 1.5T and 3T for visualization of cerebral white matter lesions.

BackgroundFluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging is a standard sequence used for the detection of white matter lesions; however, 1-mm isotropic FLAIR can take 5-7 min at 1.5T and 3T using routine methods, limiting routine use of high-resolution 3D FLAIR imaging.PurposeTo evaluate a deep learning (DL)-based unrolled optimization 3D FLAIR technique, Sonic DL™ 3D (SDL), in comparison to a standard 3D FLAIR protocol, both combined with DL-based post-processing (AIR™ Recon DL) at 1.5T and 3T.Material and MethodsA total of 67 patients (15 scanned at 1.5T and 52 at 3T) with suspected whi

Fusion 3D T1/T2 MRI for diagnosing pelvic deep infiltrating endometriosis: a non-inferiority study.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential non-invasive technique for diagnosing deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). Published studies have explored the value of high-resolution fat-suppressed 3D T1-weighted (T1w) and 3D T2-weighted (T2w) MRI in this topic. However, research on the fusion of these sequences in a merged 'PET-scanner-like' multiplanar reconstruction (Fusion 3D T1/T2) is still lacking. Our primary objective was to assess whether the diagnostic accuracy of Fusion 3D T1/T2 was non-inferior to the state-of-the-art MRI protocol for diagnosing DIE. This standard protocol cons

Distortionless, free-breathing, and respiratory resolved 3D diffusion weighted imaging of the abdomen.

PURPOSE: Abdominal imaging is frequently performed with breath holds or respiratory triggering to reduce the effects of respiratory motion. Diffusion weighted sequences provide a useful clinical contrast but have prolonged scan times due to low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and cannot be completed in a single breath hold. Echo-planar imaging (EPI) is the most commonly used trajectory for diffusion weighted imaging but it is susceptible to off-resonance artifacts. A respiratory resolved, three-dimensional (3D) diffusion prepared sequence that obtains distortionless diffusion weighted images duri

Brain structural changes in spasmodic dysphonia: A multimodal magnetic resonance imaging study.

INTRODUCTION: The pathophysiology of spasmodic dysphonia is poorly understood. This study evaluated patterns of cortical morphology, basal ganglia, and white matter microstructural alterations in patients with spasmodic dysphonia relative to healthy controls. METHODS: T1-weighted and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were obtained from 13 spasmodic dysphonia patients and 30 controls. Tract-based spatial statistics was applied to compare diffusion tensor MRI indices (i.e., mean, radial and axial diffusivities, and fractional anisotropy) between groups on a voxel-by-voxel

MR Elastography Demonstrates Increased Brain Stiffness in Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a reversible neurologic disorder characterized by a triad of cognitive impairment, gait abnormality, and urinary incontinence that is commonly treated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. However, multiple overlapping symptoms often make it difficult to differentiate normal pressure hydrocephalus from other types of dementia, and improved diagnostic techniques would help patient management. MR elastography is a novel diagnostic tool that could potentially identify patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The purpose of this stu

An approach to comparing accuracies of two FLAIR MR sequences in the detection of multiple sclerosis lesions in the brain in the absence of gold standard.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to present a new methodology to compare accuracies of two imaging fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance sequences in detection of multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions in the brain in the absence of ground truth, and to determine whether the two sequences, which differed only in echo time (TE), have the same accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We acquired FLAIR images at TE(1) = 90 ms and TE(2) = 155 ms from 46 patients with MS (24-69 years old, mean 45.8, 15 males) and 11 healthy volunteers (23-54 years old, mean 37.1, 6
