Early Visual, Refractive, and Astigmatism Vector Outcomes of StreamLight Trans-PRK for High Astigmatism (≥ 2.00 D).

OBJECTIVE: To report the early refractive, visual, and astigmatic-vector outcomes of single-step StreamLight™ transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (Trans-PRK) on the WaveLight EX500 platform in eyes with high preoperative astigmatism (≥ 2.00 dioptres, D). METHODS: Single-centre cohort study of 171 consecutive eyes of 107 patients (mean age 27.87 ± 6.56 years; 37.4% female) treated by a single surgeon. Astigmatic outcomes were analyzed by the Alpins method at the corneal plane. A subset of 57 eyes with a mean follow-up of 10.3 ± 7.4 months underwent stability sub-analysis. RESULTS: Mea

Comparison of manual and femtosecond astigmatic keratotomy in the treatment of postkeratoplasty astigmatism.

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of femtosecond astigmatic keratotomy (FSAK) and manual astigmatic keratotomy (AK) in treatment of postkeratoplasty astigmatism. METHODS: A retrospective, comparative, pairwise-matched case series including 150 patients who underwent either FSAK (n = 75) or manual AK (n = 75) for the treatment of astigmatism (>3.00 D) following penetrating keratoplasty or deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty. Pairwise matching for baseline variables (age, visual acuity and astigmatism) was performed. RESULTS: Mean age was 57.5 ± 16.0 years. The FSAK group had significantly bett

Determining spherocylindrical correction using four different wavefront error analysis methods: comparison to manifest refraction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate methods that determine refractive correction from wavefront data that best matches the manifest refraction. METHODS: Wavefront data in the form of Zernike polynomial coefficients from several VISX US Investigational Device Exemption studies were used to calculate the spherocylindrical distance correction using four methods: full pupil second order, central curvature, reduced aperture, and 4-mm pupil. The data were analyzed in two groups, preoperative (3686 measurements, 882 eyes) and 6-month postoperative (2570 measurements, 797 eyes). Differences were formed between valu

[Pitfalls of IOL power prediction after photorefractive keratectomy for high myopia -- case report, practical recommendations and literature review].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Published experience with eyes after keratorefractive correction of myopia indicates that insertion of the average keratometric readings into standard IOL power predictive formulas will frequently result in substantial undercorrection and postoperative hyperopic refraction or anisometropia after cataract surgery depending on the amount of myopia corrected previously. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accentuated differences of various approaches to minimize IOL power miscalculations by describing a case report of a patient with excessive myopia as well as a re

Bilateral Fusarium oxysporum keratitis after laser in situ keratomileusis.

UNLABELLED: We report the successful management of a rare case of bilateral post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) Fusarium oxysporum keratitis and propose a therapeutic strategy. A 19-year-old white man with no systemic diseases was referred to our emergency service 3 days after microkeratome-assisted myopic bilateral LASIK correction. He complained of blurred-vision, photophobia, and ocular pain. Clinical findings (satellite lesions, hypopyon) suggested fungal keratitis. Flaps were immediately lifted and rinsed with povidone-iodine 10%, and intensive topical and systemic and combined anti

Effectiveness and safety of coronary Laser in UnDIlatable or unCrOssable lesions: The LUDICO study.

Excimer laser coronary atherectomy (ELCA) is increasingly used in complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In balloon-failure scenarios (uncrossable [UCL] and undilatable lesions [UDL]) uniform procedural endpoints have been applied despite their different mechanisms of failure. To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ELCA in balloon-failure lesions using lesion-specific endpoints.
