Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Osteoclastogenesis Activities of Different Kinds of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Seed Oil in Vitro.

Our previous study has exhibited that one kind of Zanthoxylum bungeanum seed oil (ZSO), extracted from Zanthoxylum bungeanum seed, had inhibitory effects on osteoclastogenesis. However, the anti-osteoclastogenesis activities of different kinds of ZSO are scarcely reported. Since inflammation is related to bone loss and osteoporosis, in this study, three kinds of ZSO, Zanthoxylum schinifolium Siebold et Zucc seed oil (ZSSO), Zanthoxylum armatum DC. seed oil (ZDSO) and Zanthoxylum bungeanum maximum seed oil (ZBSO), were obtained with Soxhlet extraction and their fatty acid constituents were dete

Effect of feeding fresh or dehydrated sulla forage on microbiological, nutritional, and sensory traits of sheep cheese.

Sulla is a forage legume species exploited mainly by grazing ruminants, greatly appreciated for its high protein content and moderate levels of condensed tannins with antioxidant activity. This study was aimed to explore the potential of sulla in relation to its seasonal utilization, as fresh or stored forage, and to improve the quality traits of sulla forage stocks, proposing dehydration as alternative to haymaking. Two experiments were carried out in different seasons, spring and autumn, both involving Valle del Belìce ewes fed different diets evaluated in terms of dairy production. In the s

Transient reductions in milk fat synthesis and their association with the ruminal and metabolic profile in dairy cows fed high-starch, low-fat diets.

Sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is sometimes observed along with reduced milk fat synthesis. Inconsistent responses may be explained by dietary fat levels. Twelve ruminally cannulated cows were used in a Latin square design investigating the timing of metabolic and milk fat changes during Induction and Recovery from SARA by altering starch levels in low-fat diets. Treatments were (1) SARA Induction, (2) Recovery and (3) Control. Sub-acute ruminal acidosis was induced by feeding a diet containing 29.4% starch, 24.0% NDF and 2.8% fatty acids (FAs), whereas the Recovery and Control diets contai

Ruminal cellulolytic bacteria abundance leads to the variation in fatty acids in the rumen digesta and meat of fattening lambs.

Ruminal cellulolytic bacteria could be a diagnostic tool for determining the subacute rumen acidosis (SARA) risk in individual ruminants; however, a limited number of studies have investigated the effects of the abundance of ruminal cellulolytic bacteria on the fatty acid (FA) composition of the rumen digesta and the muscle of sheep. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the variation of rumen cellulolytic bacteria on the rumen fermentation, rumen digesta, and muscle FA composition of fattening lambs fed an identical diet. Forty-eight lambs were reared in individual u

Environmental Lead (Pb) Exposure Versus Fatty Acid Content in Blood and Milk of the Mother and in the Blood of Newborn Children.

Significant progress in understanding the effects of the neurotoxic action of lead (Pb) in young organisms had led to reduction of "safe" level in the blood (Pb-B) to 5 μg/dL in children and pregnant women. Prolonged exposure to relatively low levels of Pb, generally asymptomatic and subclinical (i.e., microintoxication), is currently the dominant form of environmental poisoning, and its negative effects on health may appear after many years, e.g., secondary contamination from Pb bone deposits released in pregnancy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of environmenta

Metabolic perturbations in pregnant rats exposed to low-dose perfluorooctanesulfonic acid: An integrated multi-omics analysis.

Emerging epidemiological evidence has linked per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure could be linked to the disturbance of gestational glucolipid metabolism, but the toxicological mechanism is unclear, especially when the exposure is at a low level. This study examined the glucolipid metabolic changes in pregnant rats treated with relatively low dose perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) through oral gavage during pregnancy [gestational day (GD): 1-18]. We explored the molecular mechanisms underlying the metabolic perturbation. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and biochemical tests

Metabolomic profiling to identify early urinary biomarkers and metabolic pathway alterations in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by the formation of numerous fluid-filled cysts that lead to progressive loss of functional nephrons. Currently, there is an unmet need for diagnostic and prognostic indicators of early stages of the disease. Metabolites were extracted from the urine of patients with early-stage ADPKD (n = 48 study participants) and age- and sex-matched normal controls (n = 47) and analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis was used to generate a global metabolomic profile of e

An increase in serum C18 unsaturated free fatty acids as a predictor of the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: No means exist for predicting the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which complicates sepsis, trauma, and a variety of clinical disorders. Because activation of phospholipid-signaling pathways involving the acyl chains oleate and linoleate may initiate and amplify the inflammatory response, and thereby lead to the development of ARDS, we examined whether serum concentrations of these bioactive lipids increase and are predictive of ARDS in at-risk patients. DESIGN: Part I: A prospective, single-blind trial. Part II: A prospective, randomized, double-blind trial. SETTING:

PGC-1α regulates lipid accumulation by coordinating fatty acid synthesis and oxidation in goose fatty liver.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) is a key regulator of lipid metabolism, particularly in fatty acid oxidation and energy homeostasis. A recent study revealed that PGC-1α exhibits differential expression in mammalian and goose fatty liver, but its function in lipid accumulation in goose fatty liver remains unclear. In this study, thirty 63-day-old male Landes geese were randomly assigned to control and overfeeding groups. Histological analysis was performed using Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and Sirius Red staining after feeding. In vitro, primary

Effects of ethanol, activated carbon, and activated kaolin on perilla seed oil: Volatile organic compounds, physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition.

Perilla seed oil (PSO) has a special aromatic odor, which is unpleasant to the personal preferences of some consumers. To this end, this article evaluated the differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition of PSO treated with ethanol (PSO-EA), activated carbon (PSO-AC), and activated kaolin (PSO-AK). The results showed that in the PSO, PSO-EA, PSO-AC, and PSO-AK samples, the content of linolenic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid hardly changed. Among the physicochemical characteristics of the four samples, the color difference be

Gamma-linolenic acid in borage oil reverses epidermal hyperproliferation in guinea pigs.

As dietary sources of gamma-linolenic acid [GLA; 18:3(n-6)], borage oil (BO; 24-25 g/100 g GLA) and evening primrose oil (PO; 8-10 g/100 g GLA) are efficacious in treating skin disorders. The triglycerol stereospecificity of these oils is distinct, with GLA being concentrated in the sn-2 position of BO and in the sn-3 position of PO. To determine whether the absolute level and/or the triglycerol stereospecificity of GLA in oils affect biological efficacy, epidermal hyperproliferation was induced in guinea pigs by a hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO) diet for 8 wk. Subsequently, guinea pigs were fe

Studies of experimentally induced retinal degeneration: 2. Early morphological changes produced by lipid peroxides in the albino rabbit.

When pure, synthetic lipid hydroperoxides (LHP) were injected into the vitreous body of albino rabbits, electrical activity was decreased in all components of the electroretinogram (ERG) in a progressive and time-related manner. In the early phase morphological changes occurred at the interface between the photoreceptor outer segments and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in response to LHP. These findings commenced within a few hours after injection and continued during the following 2-3 weeks, when the ERG was completely extinguished. Two days after injection, the rod outer segments (ROS)
