This case report describes a complex full-step class II case in a young adult patient treated with lingual straight-wire appliance and upper first molar extraction. As the patient refused a surgical treatment, she was offered the best possible camouflage with the double aim of obtaining an ideal occlusal relationship and maintaining the profile; appropriate biomechanical strategies, including extraction choice and anchorage control during space closure, were needed to achieve the planned results. This case report demonstrates the possibility of successfully resolving severe sagittal discrepanc

This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a young woman with a Class II malocclusion and maxillomandibular prognathism. One orthodontic mini- implant was placed in the posterior area of the palate to provide anchorage for?a transpalatal arch. The force for molar distalization was applied using an elastic chain from the lever arm inserted on the transpalatal arch to the mini-implant. Two sliding jigs were applied buccally as a complement for Class II malocclusion correction. This system created an efficient mechanotherapy for maxillary molar distalization. The active treatment period

Ectopically erupting maxillary canines can cause problems that necessitate surgical, orthodontic, and restorative treatment. When a canine eruption disturbance causes resorption and requires subsequent extraction of the affected teeth, the resulting spaces are candidates for orthodontic repositioning and recontouring of the remaining teeth. To achieve successful results, the clinician must have a proper knowledge of tooth anatomy, root angulation, gingival margin position, restorative techniques, and occlusion. A collaborative effort from the pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and surgeon is req

Multiple treatment options are available for patients who have impacted canines in addition to congenitally missing lateral incisors. This article describes the treatment of a 13-year-old postpubertal girl with bilaterally impacted permanent maxillary canines, missing lateral incisors, retained deciduous canines, and a midline diastema. The orthodontic treatment plan included extraction of the deciduous canines. A lingual and labial approach (1-couple force system) was used to move the permanent canines into the arch. Through a collaborative team effort, including an orthodontist and a periodo

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of retraction of anterior teeth and the initial soft tissue profile variables on upper and lower lip changes in Japanese adults. Pre- and post-treatment cephalometric radiographs of 33 Japanese female adults (aged 23.0±5.0 years), with a Class II division 1 malocclusion, who had two or four first premolars extracted, were evaluated. Lateral cephalograms taken with the lips in a voluntary relaxed position were traced and compared. Nine linear and eight angular measurements were constructed for the hard tissue measurements and 16 linear and 2 angu

The authors describe a patient with bilateral Tessier no. 6 and no. 7 clefts. The case consists of macrostomia combined with maxillary, zygomatico-orbito-temporal deformities, dental anomalies and mandibular retrusion. In addition, the cleft is located bilaterally in the maxillary arch with a double deciduous posterior dentition. This is rare. The clinical and radiological features are reported and the treatment plans are discussed.

This case report describes the treatment of an adult female with a severe Class II malocclusion and congenitally missing mandibular incisors. It was decided to extract the maxillary first premolars and use mini-implants for en masse retraction of the maxillary anterior teeth. More than 13 mm of maxillary incisor retraction was obtained, with little change in the mandibular incisor inclination. The patient's facial esthetics showed dramatic improvement. The upper and lower lips were retracted by 6 mm and 7 mm, respectively. This helped reduce the mentalis strain and improve chin projection. In

This paper describes the clinical orthodontic treatment of the three cases that were awarded the 1999 Forestadent Young Specialist Prize. There are two Class II division 1 cases treated by different treatment modalities and a Class II division 2 case complicated by a palatally ectopic maxillary canine. These case reports demonstrate the three main treatment modalities available to the orthodontist for treating skeletally-based malocclusions, i.e. growth modification, orthodontic camouflage, and a combined surgical-orthodontic approach.

Thirty persons ranging from 12 years 8 months to 42 years of age with Class II Division 1 subdivision malocclusions underwent computed tomography of the temporomandibular joints. The images obtained from axial slices were evaluated for possible asymmetries in size and position that may exist between the condylar processes associated with this malocclusion. Paired Student t tests were applied, and Pearson product moment correlations were determined after measurements on both Class I and Class II sides were obtained. The results of this study showed no statistically significant asymmetries betwe

Treatment of twins each with one impacted maxillary central incisor and a mesiodens is described. Treatment included rapid expansion, extraction of the mesiodens, surgical exposure of the impacted central incisor, and its forced eruption. The impacted incisor was brought into functional position in one patient but was lost in the other because of insufficient root length and high mobility. Orthodontic, genetic, and periodontal considerations of these 2 cases are evaluated.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to evaluate and present a technique of correcting facial asymmetry involving the mandible using angled titanium mesh.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1990 to 2006, 5 patients underwent augmentation of the mandibular angle with titanium mesh in conjunction with orthognathic surgery. The angle mesh was placed to correct a unilateral lower-third facial asymmetry. The mesh was placed in a subperiosteal fashion and fixated with monocortical screws. The facial asymmetries were a result of either congenital defects or trauma. A combination of clinical and radiographic examination fi
