In the anterior segment of the eye, phosphoinositides of the iris-ciliary body are the major source of AA for PG biosynthesis. In the past several years, we have demonstrated that these phospholipids are highly enriched in AA and have an extremely high metabolic turnover. We have also discovered that their metabolism by phospholipase C, which leads to the formation of IP3 and DG and the liberation of AA, is controlled by the following Ca2+-mobilizing receptors: alpha 1-adrenergic, M3- or M4-muscarinic cholinergic, substance P, and PGs. The release of IP3, DG, and AA in the iris was also demons

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy, and intramedullary spinal cord metastasis is extremely rare.
METHODS: Clinical and radiological data were collected from electronic medical records as well as a literature review of reported cases.
RESULTS: We report a rare case of IgA-LAM stage IIB MM with involvement of the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system. Laboratory studies showed elevated levels of serum β2-macroglobulin and cerebrospinal fluid protein. Electromyography revealed a demyelinating process with motor conduction blocks. On MRI, the lesions of MM bone m

INTRODUCTION: In this study we present a reproducible technique to assess motor recovery after nerve injury via neuromuscular junction (NMJ) immunostaining and electrodiagnostic testing.
METHODS: Wild-type mice underwent sciatic nerve transection with repair. Hindlimb muscles were collected for microscopy up to 30 weeks after injury. Immunostaining was used to assess axons (NF200), Schwann cells (S100), and motor endplates (α-bungarotoxin). Compound motor action potential (CMAP) amplitude was used to assess tibialis anterior (TA) function.
RESULTS: One week after injury, nearly all (98.0%) e

INTRODUCTION: Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) syndrome was a rare and slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder, which heralded by sensory symptoms within the face, and followed by evolution of sensory and motor deficits in the face and limbs. The underlying pathogenesis of FOSMN remains to be fully elucidated.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with facial sensory deficits spreading in a rostral-caudal manner. He then developed diffuse fasciculation, bulbar signs, atrophy and weakness of facial, neck, and limb muscles progressively, a process

OBJECTIVE: There is increased evidence that oxidative stress is involved in exacerbations of neurodegenerative diseases and spinal muscular atrophies.
METHODS: We examined changes in morphology and expression of antioxidant proteins and peroxiredoxins in motor neurons of lumbar spinal cord, dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons, macroglial cells and quadriceps muscles of newborn heterozygous Loa/+ mice ("legs at odd angles"), a mouse model for early onset of the spinal muscular atrophy with lower extremity predominance (SMA-LED).
RESULTS: Our data indicate that newborn Loa-mice develop: neuro

In the postprandial state, the liver takes up and stores glucose to minimize the fluctuation of glycemia. Elevated insulin concentrations, an increase in the load of glucose reaching the liver, and the oral/enteral/portal vein route of glucose delivery (compared with the peripheral intravenous route) are factors that increase the rate of net hepatic glucose uptake (NHGU). The entry of glucose into the portal vein stimulates a portal glucose signal that not only enhances NHGU but concomitantly reduces muscle glucose uptake to ensure appropriate partitioning of a glucose load. This coordinated r

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a degenerative disease manifesting a combination of parkinsonism, cerebellar, pyramidal, and autonomic (including urinary, sexual and anorectal) dysfunction. It is pathomorphologically defined, but lacks a definitive clinical diagnostic test. In patients with probable MSA, abnormal sphincter EMG, as compared to control subjects, has been found in the majority of patients in all the different forms of the disease in most studies, including patients who, as yet, have no urological or anorectal problems. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as a rule do not show

Laminin is a basement membrane (BM) glycoprotein composed of three of five subunits, the A, M, B1, B2, and the S chain. Four forms of laminin, A-B1-B2, A-S-B2, M-B1-B2, and M-S-B2, have been identified. Laminin is implicated in various biological processes such as cell adhesion and differentiation. We studied immunohistochemically the expression of the four laminin subunits A, M, B1, B2 as well as of neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM, CD56), a marker of regenerating myofibers, in various neuromuscular disorders. In normal muscle, the predominant subunits of myofiber laminin were M, B1, and

The clinical use of the laryngeal electromyography is still scanty; nevertheless, in our experience it has been shown to be an efficient and objective test in the study of the neurological disorders of the larynx and in the prognosis of recovery after vocal cord paralysis. We have performed conventional electromyography of the thyroarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles in 25 patients with laryngoscopically--confirmed vocal cord paralysis of different etiology. Positive sharp waves, fibrillation potentials and decreased or absent activity on maximal voluntary effort provided enough evidence of den

The drive to breathe in exercise is thought to result from a combination of neural and humoral factors, but the exact nature of the controlling signals is controversial. This review examines evidence suggesting that potassium could be a signal that drives ventilation (VE) in exercise. Potassium is lost from working muscle, which results in a marked hyperkalemia in the arterial plasma. The rise in potassium is directly proportional to the increase in carbon dioxide production during exercise and is also well correlated with VE in normal subjects and in subjects who do not produce acid (McArdle'

A 52-year-old woman presented with increasing pain, weakness, and paraesthesiae of four months' duration in the lower limbs. She suffered from chronic obstructive airways disease and hypertension. Neurological examination revealed wasting of the quadriceps muscles, weakness of the lower limbs, and absent ankle jerks. The sensory examination was normal. Full blood count, ESR, biochemical, immunological, and viral studies, urinary heavy metal assays, and cerebrospinal fluid examination were normal. Nerve conduction studies were consistent with a sensorimotor neuropathy, and electromyographic sam

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle function and mass continuously decrease during aging. Most studies target limb muscles owing to their direct impact on mobility and falls risk. The diaphragm (DIA), also a type of skeletal muscle with different phenotype, has received less attention. Comparative research of the DIA and limb muscles can reveal their distinct aging characteristics. Critically, the potential endogenous anti-aging mechanisms of DIA that may provide new insights into the mechanisms of sarcopenia in limb muscles remain scarce.
METHODS: Treadmill and grip tests assessed limb muscle functi

The extent and mechanisms by which neural input regulates skeletal muscle mass remain largely unknown. Adult spinal cord isolated (SI) rats were implanted unilaterally with a microstimulator, whereas the contralateral limb served as SI control (SI-C). A 100-HZ, 1-s stimulus was delivered every 30 s for 5 min, followed by a 5-min rest. This was repeated six times consecutively (SI-Stim1) or with a 9-h interval after the third bout (SI-Stim2) for 30 days (1 min of daily activity). SI-Stim1 and SI-Stim2 paradigms attenuated plantaris atrophy by 20% and 38%, respectively, whereas only SI-Stim2 blu

1. Recordings have been made from multiple single muscle spindle afferents from medial gastrocnemius (MG) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles of one hindlimb in decerebrate cats, together with ankle rotation and EMG signals, during treadmill locomotion. Whilst the other three limbs walked freely, the experimental limb was denervated except for the nerves to MG and TA and secured so that it could rotate only at the ankle joint, without any external load. Each afferent was characterised by succinylcholine testing with regard to its intrafusal fibre contacts. Active movements were recorded and the

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) encompasses a spectrum of disorders caused by compression of neurovascular structures at the thoracic outlet. Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome (aTOS) is rare, accounting for less than 1% of cases, yet carries significant morbidity due to arterial injury, thrombosis, and distal embolization. We present a 34-year-old woman with progressive pain, paresthesia, and bluish discoloration of the left upper limb. Doppler ultrasound demonstrated reduced ulnar artery calibre with a tardus-parvus waveform, indicating distal arterial compromise. CT angiography revealed a fus

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE-PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to describe a gait disorder presenting as a bilateral sacral radiculopathy after vigorous cycling. Also, we discuss the pathogenic mechanisms and we revise the bibliography.
PATIENT AND METHODS: The patient complained of a rapid painless weakness in legs, after intense and prolonged cycling 4 months ago. The physical and electromyographical examinations revealed important weakness in foot and knee flexors, and signs of acute denervation with mixed reinnervation (active and chronic) in myotomal S1 muscles, respectively. The lumb

No data are available on the incidence of pelvic pain and organic dysfunction (PPOD) in patients suffering from low back pain. PPOD is not an uncommon finding in the low back pain patient. Women appear to be more frequently involved than men. The results of recent electrophysiologic investigations indicate that many patients with urological, bowel or anorectal dysfunction demonstrate evidence of denervation neuropathy in muscles innervated by the branches of the pudendal nerve. Six patients with low back pain meeting predetermined criteria, indicating the presence of PPOD as a result of suspec

1. The chronotropic and inotropic responses of the denervated dog heart to intravenous infusions of noradrenaline, adrenaline and isoprenaline were studied.2. The maximum rate of rise of pressure in the left ventricle of the heart, (dP/dt max) measured at a constant heart rate and mean systemic arterial pressure during each series of infusions, was used as an index of inotropic changes (Furnival, Linden & Snow, 1970).3. The order of potency of the catecholamines in producing both chronotropic and inotropic effects was isoprenaline > adrenaline > noradrenaline.4. For the same increase in heart

BACKGROUND: The cellular mechanisms underlying the age-associated loss of muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) are poorly understood, hampering the development of effective treatment strategies. Here, we performed a detailed characterization of age-related pathophysiological changes in the mouse neuromuscular system.
METHODS: Young, adult, middle-aged, and old (1, 4, 14, and 24-30 months old, respectively) C57BL/6J mice were used. Motor behavioural and electrophysiological tests and histological and immunocytochemical procedures were carried out to simultaneously analyse structural, molecula
