Temporally Correlated Stochastic Spiking Neural Networks Enabled by 2D Ferroelectric Synapse-Neuron Integration.

Stochastic neural computation is essential for probabilistic inference and brain-inspired information processing. However, most hardware stochastic neurons generate statistically independent spikes and fail to reproduce the temporal correlations observed in biological neurons. We demonstrate an integrated hardware synapse-neuron consisting of a FeFET synapse and a CulnP2S6 neuron, where the neuron exhibits temporally correlated stochastic spiking. The spike probability is continuously tuned by synaptic weight through voltage modulation, enabling hardware stochastic neural computation. Electric

Research on the Performance Prediction of Fly Ash Slurry by Neural Network Based on Information Bottleneck Theory and Attention Mechanism.

In grouting projects, the relationship between slurry properties and mix proportions is multivariate and nonlinear. Researchers have widely employed mathematical and computational methods to investigate this relationship, and the use of machine learning to predict the properties of fly ash slurries has gradually become a hot topic. To this end, this paper uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to establish predictive models relating grout mix proportions to the properties of the grout and the resulting stone bodies. It investigates the effects of the water-to-binder ratio, fly ash dosage, a

Beyond convolutions and supervised learning with transformers and representation learning for retinal image analysis.

Retinal image analysis has enjoyed groundbreaking advances in the last ten years due to seismic improvements in image analysis techniques from the field of computer vision. Previous reviews in deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) (Schmidt-Erfurth et al., 2018; Ting et al., 2019) have either focused on supervised learning, where labels are curated or manually created, or concentrated on the application of AI in specific image modalities and retina diseases (Hormel et al., 2021; Li et al., 2024a (Hormel et al., 2021; Li et al., 2024a)). In this review, we sought to summarize the advanc

FPGA implementation of deep learning architecture for ankylosing spondylitis detection from MRI.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), commonly known as Bechterew's disease, is a complex, potentially disabling disease that develops slowly over time and progresses to radiographic sacroiliitis. The etiology of this disease is poorly understood, making it difficult to diagnose. Therefore, treatment is also delayed. This study aims to diagnose AS with an automated system that classifies axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences of AS patients. Recently, the application of deep learning neural networks (DLNNs) for MRI classification has become widespread. The implementation of this process on co

An Efficient, Lightweight, Tiny 2D-CNN Ensemble Model to Detect Cardiomegaly in Heart CT Images.

Cardiomegaly is a significant global health concern, especially in developing nations. Although advanced clinical care is available for newly diagnosed patients, many in resource-limited regions face late diagnoses and consequent increased mortality. This challenge is accentuated by a scarcity of radiography equipment and radiologists. Hence, we propose the development of a computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) system, specifically a lightweight, tiny 2D-CNN ensemble model, to facilitate early detection and, potentially, reduce mortality rates. Deep learning, with its subset of convolutional neural

Infrared thermography based on artificial intelligence as a screening method for carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis.

This study further evaluated a computer-based infrared thermography (IRT) system, which employs artificial neural networks for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) using a large database of 502 thermal images of the dorsal and palmar side of 132 healthy and 119 pathological hands. It confirmed the hypothesis that the dorsal side of the hand is of greater importance than the palmar side when diagnosing CTS thermographically. Using this method it was possible correctly to classify 72.2% of all hands (healthy and pathological) based on dorsal images and > 80% of hands when only severely

Classify head-turning in walking: Multi-segment IMU sensing with recurrent neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Head movement is a fundamental component of gait control and environmental orientation during locomotion. Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) enable real-time inference of upcoming movement, and early detection of impending head turns during walking is critical for enhancing interactive systems. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: The study aimed to investigate whether multi-segment IMU data reliably detect and classify upcoming head turns and their direction before and during head turns while walking, and to hypothesize that neural networks effectively capture the temporal integration pat

A combined model of convolutional neural networks and graph attention networks for improved classification of mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a precursor of Alzheimer's disease (AD), underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. With an aging global population, AD prevalence is rising, necessitating more precise diagnostic methods. Deep learning technology shows promise for MCI and AD classification, but existing convolutional neural network (CNN) and graph attention network (GAT) models have limitations in capturing brain structural features and detecting microlesions. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach combining a CNN and modified GAT model to improve MCI classifica

Automated analysis of feline posture using deep learning and geometric modeling.

INTRODUCTION: Body posture provides clinically relevant information in cats, but behavioral interpretation can be challenging because postural signs are often subtle, context-dependent, and subject to inter-observer variability. We developed and evaluated a non-invasive computer vision framework for extracting clinically interpretable feline posture descriptors from side-view RGB images acquired using low-cost cameras, with the aim of supporting behavioral assessment, welfare monitoring, and future clinical decision support. METHODS: The proposed framework combines object detection, anatomica

Identification and validation of cell senescence genes in recurrent spontaneous abortion via multiple bioinformatics algorithms.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) represents a significant challenge in reproductive obstetrics, affecting approximately 5% of couples globally. Despite various treatments, the effectiveness of these interventions remains highly contentious. Emerging evidence suggests that cellular senescence plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of multiple diseases, potentially implicating its involvement in RSA as well. This study integrated two RNA sequencing datasets and employed Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) alongside five machine learning algorithms (XGBoost, Boruta, LASSO,

Poverty and caregiver mental health are related to infant and toddler resting-state brain networks: insights from fNIRS.

SIGNIFICANCE: The first 3 years of life represent a period of heightened neural plasticity, during which early adversity-such as poverty and maternal stress-can shape long-term developmental trajectories. However, little is known about how these adversities are linked to neural network organization in infants and toddlers living in low-resource settings. AIM: We examined how prenatal exposure to maternal poverty and mental health symptoms relates to neural network organization in early childhood. APPROACH: We conducted a longitudinal study with 42 children (6 to 36 months old) from economica

A hybrid learning approach for MRI-based detection of alzheimer's disease stages using dual CNNs and ensemble classifier.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related dementias are significant global health issues characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory loss. Computer-aided systems can help physicians in the early and accurate detection of AD, enabling timely intervention and effective management. This study presents a combination of two parallel Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and an ensemble learning method for classifying AD stages using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. Initially, these images were resized and augmented before being input into Network 1 and Network 2, which have different

A Unified GNN-CV Framework for Intelligent Aerial Situational Awareness.

Aerial situational awareness (SA) faces significant challenges due to inherent complexity involving large-scale dynamic entities and intricate spatio-temporal relationships. While deep learning advances SA for specific data modalities (static or time-series), existing approaches often lack the holistic, vision-centric perspective essential for human decision-making. To bridge this gap, we propose a unified GNN-CV framework for operational-level SA. This framework leverages mature computer vision (CV) architectures to intelligently process radar-map-like representations, addressing diverse SA t

Privileged representational axes in biological and artificial neural networks.

How do neurons code information? Recent work emphasizes the geometry and information content of population codes, using measures that are blind to the native tunings (or 'axes') of neural responses. But might these representational axes matter, with some privileged systematically over others? We developed methods to test for alignment of neural tuning across brains and deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs). Across both vision and audition, both brains and DCNNs consistently favoured certain axes for representing the natural world. Moreover, the representational axes of DCNNs trained on na

Dependence of cognitive ability on synchronous neural interactions determined by magnetoencephalography.

Previous studies have shown that synchronous neural interactions (SNIs) underlying healthy brain function can be readily distinguished from neural anomalies associated with diseases including dementia; however, it is imperative to identify biomarkers that facilitate early identification of individuals at risk for cognitive decline before the onset of clinical symptoms. Here, we evaluated whether variation in brain function, controlling for age, corresponds with subtle decrements in cognitive performance in cognitively healthy women. A total of 251 women (age range 24-102 yr) who performed abov

ECG synthesis for cardiac arrhythmias: Integrating self-supervised learning and generative adversarial networks.

Arrhythmia classifiers relying on supervised deep learning models usually require a substantial amount of labeled clinical data. The distribution of these labels is strictly related to the statistics of cardiovascular diseases among the population, which inherently narrows models' performance for classification tasks. Furthermore, during acquisition and data retrieval from electronic health records, concerns arise regarding patient anonymization due to stringent clinical policies. We introduce a conditional generative architecture for electrocardiography time series, which integrates self-supe

Deep learning-based scan range optimization can reduce radiation exposure in coronary CT angiography.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac computed tomography (CT) is essential in diagnosing coronary heart disease. However, a disadvantage is the associated radiation exposure to the patient which depends in part on the scan range. This study aimed to develop a deep neural network to optimize the delimitation of scan ranges in CT localizers to reduce the radiation dose. METHODS: On a retrospective training cohort of 1507 CT localizers randomly selected from calcium scoring and angiography scans and acquired between 2010 and 2017, optimized scan ranges were delimited by two radiologists in consensus.
