Psychiatric disturbances in a 6-year-old boy with Klinefelter's syndrome.

A 6-year-old boy with severe psychiatric problems was found to have Klinefelter's syndrome. He had a mixed emotional and behavioral clinical picture similar to and difficult to distinguish from that of other child psychiatric disorders. Klinefelter's syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a prepubertal boy with multiple emotional, behavioral, academic, social, and developmental problems.

Psychological Well-Being of Mothers and Siblings in Families of Girls and Women with Rett Syndrome.

Few published studies have reported on the psychological well-being of family members of individuals with Rett syndrome (RTT). Eighty-seven mothers of girls and women with RTT completed a questionnaire survey about their daughters' behavioral phenotype, current health, and behavior problems, and their own and a sibling's well-being. Mothers reported increased anxiety but similar levels of depression when compared to a normative sample. Across all problem domains on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, child and adolescent siblings (n = 39) were reported by mothers to have fewer diffic

Neuropsychiatric and behavioral aspects of trisomy 21.

Down syndrome (DS), or trisomy 21, is the most common identifiable genetic cause of mental retardation. The syndrome is unique with respect to its cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric profiles. The well-known cheerful and friendly demeanor often creates a personality stereotype, with parents and observers commenting on the positive attributes. Despite these strengths, approximately 20% to 40% of children with DS have recognized behavioral problems. Such problems persist through adulthood, with a decrease in externalizing symptoms of aggressiveness and attention problems and the emergence of

The development and disorders of sleep.

Sleep-related problems are extremely frequent sources of parental concern and question. Many childhood sleep difficulties are simply minor behavioral problems, whereas other sleep changes represent serious disorders. Increased knowledge about the development and disorders of sleep has enormous value in making accurate diagnoses and effective interventions. Overviews are presented on common and important sleep disorders in infancy, childhood, and adolescence, including night walking, partial arousal, sleep-disordered breathing, narcolepsy, and sleep loss secondary to late and erratic schedules.

Children in homeless families: risks to mental health and development.

This study examined the psychological adjustment of 159 homeless children in comparison with a sample of 62 low-income children living at home. In each group, ages ranged from 8 to 17 years. As expected, homeless children were found to have greater recent stress exposure than housed poor children, as well as more disrupted schooling and friendships. Child behavior problems were above normative levels for homeless children, particularly for antisocial behavior. Across the 2 samples, however, behavior problems were more related to parental distress, cumulative risk status, and recent adversity t

Housing insecurity and adolescent behavioral outcomes: The mediating role of aggression in parenting.

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity impacts millions of families with children each year and is linked with a range of adverse outcomes. Greater understanding of pathways linking housing insecurity with emotional and behavioral problem is needed to prevent enduring mental health problems. The Family Stress Model and Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model contribute understanding to the complex dynamics underlying development from childhood to adolescence in the context of economic hardship and parental strain. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of harsh parenting in th

Emotional and Behavioral Outcomes in Childhood for Survivors of Invasive Group B Streptococcus Disease in Infancy: Findings From 5 Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of invasive group B Streptococcus (iGBS) disease, notably meningitis, are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. However, the limited studies to date have a median follow-up to 18 months and have mainly focused on moderate or severe neurodevelopmental impairment, with no previous studies on emotional-behavioral problems among iGBS survivors. METHODS: In this multicountry, matched cohort study, we included children aged 18 months to 17 years with infant iGBS sepsis and meningitis from health demographic surveillance systems, or hospital records in Argentina,

Understanding neurodevelopmental trajectories and behavioral profiles in SCN1A-related epilepsy syndromes.

BACKGROUND: A pathogenic variant in SCN1A can result in a spectrum of phenotypes, including Dravet syndrome (DS) and genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS + ) syndrome. Dravet syndrome (DS) is associated with refractory seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability (ID), motor impairment, and challenging behavior(1,2). GEFS + is a less severe phenotype in which cognition is often normal and seizures are less severe. Challenging behavior largely affects quality of life of patients and their families. This study describes the profile and course of the behavioral phenotype in

The effects of prayer on attention resource availability and attention bias.

Two experiments were used to measure the effects of prayer, contemplation, or a control activity on attention resource capacity and attention bias. Results from a dual-task test in Experiment 1 indicated that allowing participants to pray about an issue in their lives improved subsequent task performance, but only for individuals who score highly on a measure of religiosity. Experiment 2 suggested that praying about a problem can bias attention in a word-search task. Similar effects were not observed for control activities. Thus, at least for people most likely to engage in religious behavior,

Energy Drink Use in U.S. Service Members After Deployment: Associations With Mental Health Problems, Aggression, and Fatigue.

INTRODUCTION: Energy drink use has become widespread, particularly by service members, but its association with mental health problems and other behavioral and health problems such as aggression and fatigue is unclear. The present study examines the association between energy drink use and mental health problems, aggressive behaviors, and fatigue in a military population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At 7 months following a combat deployment, 627 male infantry soldiers were surveyed. Prevalence rates were examined for the frequency (defined as the number of energy drinks consumed per day) and volum

Reward-sensitivity, inhibition of reward-seeking, and dorsolateral prefrontal working memory function in problem gamblers not in treatment.

Given the central role of perseverative chasing in problem gambling, the present study sought to find evidence for three hypothesized components of perseveration in problem gamblers: reward-sensitivity dominance, deficient inhibition of reward-seeking behavior, and working memory deficits. This was the first attempt to examine working memory deficits in problem gamblers using a conditional association task, which is associated with posterior-dorsolateral prefrontal functioning. In a sample that was not in treatment, and representative in terms of comorbidity, problem gamblers performed signifi

Alcohol-related problems: recognition and intervention.

Early identification of alcohol-related problems is important because these problems are prevalent, pose serious health risks to patients and their families, and are amenable to intervention. Physicians may be able to help patients change their drinking behaviors. The most effective tool for screening is a thorough history of the patient's drinking behavior, designed to identify patterns of alcohol-related difficulties with physical and mental health, family life, legal authorities and employment. Alcohol drinkers can be categorized as at-risk, problem or alcohol dependent, according to a prot

A model to explain at-risk/problem gambling among male and female adolescents: gender similarities and differences.

This study aimed at testing a model in which cognitive, dispositional, and social factors were integrated into a single perspective as predictors of gambling behavior. We also aimed at providing further evidence of gender differences related to adolescent gambling. Participants were 994 Italian adolescents (64% Males; Mean age = 16.57). Hierarchical logistic regressions attested the predictive power of the considered factors on at-risk/problem gambling - measured by administering the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents (SOGS-RA) - in both boys and girls.
