Domestic risk factors for increased rodent abundance in a Lassa fever endemic region of rural Upper Guinea.

Lassa fever (LF) is a viral haemorrhagic fever endemic in West Africa and spread primarily by the multimammate rat, Mastomys natalensis. As there is no vaccine, reduction of rodent-human transmission is essential for disease control. As the household is thought to be a key site of transmission, understanding domestic risk factors for M. natalensis abundance is crucial. Rodent captures in conjunction with domestic surveys were carried out in 6 villages in an area of rural Upper Guinea with high LF endemicity. 120 rodent traps were set in rooms along a transect in each village for three nights,

Experimental evidence for opposing effects of high deer density on tick-borne pathogen prevalence and hazard.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the mechanisms driving disease risk is challenging for multi-host pathogens, such as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), the tick-borne bacteria causing Lyme disease. Deer are tick reproduction hosts but do not transmit B. burgdorferi s.l., whereas rodents and birds are competent transmission hosts. Here, we use a long-term deer exclosure experiment to test three mechanisms for how high deer density might shape B. burgdorferi s.l. prevalence in ticks: increased prevalence due to higher larval tick densities facilitating high transmission on rodents (M1); alternative

The rodent vaginal microbiome across the estrous cycle and the effect of genital nerve electrical stimulation.

Treatment options are limited for the approximately 40% of postmenopausal women worldwide who suffer from female sexual dysfunction (FSD). Neural stimulation has shown potential as a treatment for genital arousal FSD, however the mechanisms for its improvement are unknown. One potential cause of some cases of genital arousal FSD are changes to the composition of the vaginal microbiota, which is associated with vulvovaginal atrophy. The primary hypothesis of this study was that neural stimulation may induce healthy changes in the vaginal microbiome, thereby improving genital arousal FSD symptom

Sacral nerve stimulation ameliorates colonic barrier functions in a rodent model of colitis.

BACKGROUND: The mucosal barrier damage is recognized as one of the key factors in the pathogenesis of colitis. While sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) was reported to have therapeutic potential for colitis, its mechanisms of actions on colonic permeability remained largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, colitis was induced by intrarectal administration of TNBS in rats. Five days later, they were treated with SNS or sham-SNS for 10 days. The effects of SNS on colonic permeability were assessed by measuring the expression of tight-junction proteins involved in regulating permeability and the FIT

Pathophysiological Changes During Ischemia-reperfusion Injury in Rodent Hepatic Steatosis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ischemia and reperfusion injuries may produce deleterious effects on hepatic tissue after liver surgery and transplantation. The impact of ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) on the liver depends on its substrate, the percentage of liver ischemic tissue subjected to IRI and the ischemia time. The consequences of IRI are more evident in pathologic liver substrates, such as steatotic livers. This review is the result of an extended bibliographic PubMed search focused on the last 20 years. It highlights basic differences encountered during IRI in lean and steatotic livers based on s

Marble-burying behavior test as a murine model of compulsive-like behavior.

Object burying by rodents is a popular screening tool for anxiolytic agents. However, modulation of marble-burying by serotonin reuptake inhibitors prompted its link to obsessive-compulsive disorder/compulsive-like behavior. The Marble-burying behavior test is an acute test; however, some investigators incorporate the sub-acute treatment regimen as an essential component for screening anti-compulsive agents. The test exhibits between-laboratory methodological differences and demonstrates positive treatment responses to an array of pharmacotherapies, creating doubts about its predictive validit

Experimental Models to Study Autism Spectrum Disorders: hiPSCs, Rodents and Zebrafish.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) affect around 1.5% of the global population, which manifest alterations in communication and socialization, as well as repetitive behaviors or restricted interests. ASD is a complex disorder with known environmental and genetic contributors; however, ASD etiology is far from being clear. In the past decades, many efforts have been put into developing new models to study ASD, both in vitro and in vivo. These models have a lot of potential to help to validate some of the previously associated risk factors to the development of the disorder, and to test new potenti

Cytokine activin C ameliorates chronic neuropathic pain in peripheral nerve injury rodents by modulating the TRPV1 channel.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The cytokine activin C is mainly expressed in small-diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and suppresses inflammatory pain. However, the effects of activin C in neuropathic pain remain elusive. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Male rats and wild-type and TRPV1 knockout mice with peripheral nerve injury - sciatic nerve axotomy and spinal nerve ligation in rats; chronic constriction injury (CCI) in mice - provided models of chronic neuropathic pain. Ipsilateral lumbar (L)4-5 DRGs were assayed for activin C expression. Chronic neuropathic pain animals were treated with intrat

Layer 4 organization and respiration locking in the rodent nose somatosensory cortex.

Rodents and other mammals acquire sensory information by precisely orchestrated head, whisker, and respiratory movements. We have, however, only limited information about integration of these signals. In the somatosensory domain, the integration of somatosensory information with other modalities is particularly pertinent for body parts such as eyes, ears, and nose, which serve another modality. Here we analyzed the nose/nostril representation in the rodent somatosensory cortex. We identified the representation of the nose/nostril in the rat somatosensory cortex by receptive field mapping and s

Systematics, Ecology, and Host Switching: Attributes Affecting Emergence of the Lassa Virus in Rodents across Western Africa.

Ever since it was established that rodents serve as reservoirs of the zoonotic Lassa virus (LASV), scientists have sought to answer the questions: which populations of rodents carry the virus? How do fluctuations in LASV prevalence and rodent abundance influence Lassa fever outbreaks in humans? What does it take for the virus to adopt additional rodent hosts, proliferating what already are devastating cycles of rodent-to-human transmission? In this review, we examine key aspects of research involving the biology of rodents that affect their role as LASV reservoirs, including phylogeography, de

Frequency of Animal Leptospirosis in the Southern United States and the Implications for Human Health.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with symptoms in humans and animals, ranging from subclinical to serious and fatal. The disease occurs worldwide, but there is limited recognition of the public and animal health risks it poses in the southern United States. A systematic review of the frequency of animal leptospirosis in 17 states and jurisdictions covering the southern continental United States was performed to advance our understanding of the pathogen's distribution and identify transmission patterns that could be targeted for prevention efforts. Fifty-two articles, spanning >100 years, me

Variations in the adenohypophysis of the expression of proliferating cellular nuclear antigen, oestrogen and androgen receptors in relation to gonadal steroids during pregnancy of viscachas (Lagostomus maximus maximus).

Viscachas are native rodents of South America that present a long pregnancy of ~154 days. In this work, we analysed variations in the expression of proliferating cellular nuclear antigen, oestrogen and androgen receptors (ERα and AR) in pituitary pars distalis (PD) and pars tuberalis (PT) in relation to oestradiol and testosterone serum levels in non-pregnant and pregnant viscachas. In PD, cell proliferation increased with pregnancy and lactotrophs proliferated during mid-pregnancy (MP). ERα nuclear-immunoreactive cells (ERαn-ir) were maximal in late pregnancy and AR expression did not vary du

Brazilian Spotted Fever Prevention through a Nonlethal Capybara Population Control Strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), a lethal tick-borne Rickettsioses (2000 - 2018 >600 human deaths) involving synanthropic capybara as host. METHODS: We introduced an alternative to mitigate human-capybara conflicts and epidemiologic concerns of BSF. Complex aspects like transmission dynamics, risk areas, host mobility, and birth rate control, were considered to develop a prevention strategy using an anti-GnRH vaccine. RESULTS: The propositioned immunocontraceptive potentially remove and prevent the spread of BSF from endemic areas. CONCLUSIONS: We propose the anti-GnRH vaccine a

Molecular phylogeny of Blastocystis isolates from wild rodents captured in Indonesia and Japan.

Blastocystis sp. is a common intestinal protist found worldwide in a variety of animals, including humans. Currently, 17 subtypes (STs) of Blastocystis isolates from mammalian and avian host species have been reported based on the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA). Among these, human Blastocystis were only identified among STs 1-9. Except ST9, all other STs comprised isolates from humans and other animal species. Entire sequence data of the SSU rDNA of nine Blastocystis isolates from laboratory rats or guinea pigs previously showed ST4, whereas Blastocystis isolates from wild rodents

Characterization of the Bujaru, frijoles and Tapara antigenic complexes into the sandfly fever group and two unclassified phleboviruses from Brazil.

The genus Phlebovirus includes the sandfly fever viruses and tick-transmitted uukuviruses. Sandfly fever group viruses have been isolated from various vertebrate species and from phlebotomines and occasionally alternative arthropods, e.g. mosquitoes, or ceratopogonids of the genus Culicoides. Uukuniemi serogroup viruses have been isolated from various vertebrate species and from ticks. Despite the public health importance of some viruses of the genus, the genomic diversity of phleboviruses that could be incriminated as causative of human or veterinary diseases remains underestimated. Here we d
