Diffusion-weighted (Dw) imaging has for a number of years been a diagnostic tool in the field of neuroradiology, yet only since the end of the 1990s, with the introduction of echoplanar imaging (EPI) and the use of sequences capable of performing diffusion studies during a single breath hold, has it found diagnostic applications at the level of the abdomen. The inherent sensitivity to motion and the magnetic susceptibility of Dw sequences nonetheless still create problems in the study of the abdomen due to artefacts caused by the heartbeat and intestinal peristalsis, as well as the presence of

AUDIENCE: This certifying exam practice ultrasound case is intended for emergency physicians (EP) in training.
INTRODUCTION: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential tool in the practice of Emergency Medicine (EM). EM physicians routinely use POCUS to expedite diagnostic evaluations, guide resuscitative efforts, enhance the safety and success of bedside procedures, and reassess critically ill patients in real-time. Furthermore, POCUS is listed in the Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine from ABEM, including diagnostic, resuscitative, and procedural components.1

Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) represent the most prevalent osteoporotic fracture and constitute a growing cause of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization worldwide. Although often considered benign, VCFs are associated with chronic pain, progressive spinal deformity, functional impairment, decreased pulmonary capacity, and increased short- and long-term mortality, especially in older adults. Despite their high prevalence, key challenges persist regarding appropriate diagnostic evaluation, optimal treatment selection, and integration of osteoporosis management following fract

Nonaqueous deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based high internal phase double emulsions (double-HIPEs) were employed as a novel platform for synthesizing polyHIPE beads with a well-defined spherical shape and a 3D-interconnected macroporous structure. A primary DES1/O HIPE was prepared using the monomer styrene and the cross-linker divinylbenzene (10:1 molar ratio) as the oil (continuous) phase (20 vol %) and stabilized with the nonionic Span 60 surfactant (10, 20, or 30 wt %). It was then dispersed at a controlled addition rate (0.9 or 1.8 mL/min) into DES2, a surfactant and water-free suspension m

OBJECTIVES: Listening-related fatigue can be a significant problem for adults who struggle to hear and understand, particularly adults with hearing loss. However, valid, sensitive, and clinically useful measures for listening-related fatigue do not currently exist. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a brief clinical tool for measuring listening-related fatigue in adults.
DESIGN: The clinical scale was derived from the 40-item version of the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale for Adults (VFS-A-40), an existing, reliable, and valid research tool for measuring listening-related fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Investigations on radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) have predominantly focused on local effects, primarily those associated with radiation damage to lung parenchyma. However, recent studies from our group and others have revealed that radiation-induced damage to branching serial structures such as airways and vessels may also have a substantial impact on post-radiotherapy (RT) lung function. Furthermore, recent results from multiple functional lung avoidance RT trials, although promising, have demonstrated only modest toxicity reduction, likely because they were primarily focuse

OBJECTIVE: Both the stability of the subtalar joint and the support of the medial column serve as crucial stabilising structures in progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD). Effective restoration of these stabilising components-often involving gastrocnemius or Achilles tendon recession-is essential for the treatment of PCFD. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) combined with subtalar arthroereisis and medial column stabilisation for PCFD.
METHODS: Sixty-eight patients (68 feet) with PCFD treated at our hospital between Fe

BACKGROUND: Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine is an effective and well tolerated artemisinin-based combination therapy that has been assessed extensively for the prevention and treatment of malaria. Piperaquine, similar to several structurally related antimalarials currently used, can prolong cardiac ventricular repolarisation duration and the electrocardiographic QT interval, leading to concerns about its proarrhythmic potential. We aimed to assess the risk of potentially lethal iatrogenic ventricular arrhythmias in individuals receiving dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine.
METHODS: We did a systema

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Osteochondral autografting and allografting of the femoral head have been described as treatments for avascular necrosis without segmental collapse, fracture, osteochondritis dissecans, and tumours. One long-term study reported that 80% of nonsteroid-treated patients had successful outcomes. Most data are compiled from small case reports or series. Although these results are encouraging, to the authors' knowledge, there is no basic scientific evidence regarding optimal graft source or technique reported in the peer-reviewed literature. The objective of this study was to c

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid nonunion remains a challenging injury with no clear consensus on treatment. Surgical options, such as bone grafting procedures, are available for the treatment of scaphoid nonunions. While open grafting provides direct visualization, it is theoretically believed to lead to several problems due to the complex ligamentous structure responsible for wrist stability and challenges in the vascular supply of the scaphoid. On the other hand, despite its technical challenges, arthroscopic grafting is thought to avoid complications by preserving surrounding tissues.

BACKGROUND: Primary bone tumors frequently occur in the proximal tibia, ranking as the second most common location after the distal femur1. Challenges to treatment include the proximity of neurovascular structures, limited soft-tissue coverage, compromised knee extension, and postoperative complications1-8. The present video article describes proximal tibial resection for the treatment of a bone tumor and prosthetic reconstruction combined with a medial gastrocnemius flap.
DESCRIPTION: Proximal tibial resection is performed with use of an anteromedial approach. After defining the resection le

BACKGROUND: Developmental dyslexia is classically divided into Boder's dysphonetic (DD), dyseidetic (DYD) and mixed (MD) subtypes, assigned by direct reading-and-spelling testing. Its computerised Italian adaptation, the Direct Test of Reading and Spelling (DTRS), assigns the subtype algorithmically from the reading quotient and the percentage of correctly spelt known and unknown words.
AIMS: Using the same source clinical cohort and the same stable and sparse regression classifier (SSRC) as our companion, we asked whether the subtypes form natural clusters or lie on a continuum, and whether

BACKGROUND: In patients with painful ankle arthrodesis, the surgical treatment is challenging, and may include takedown of ankle arthrodesis and conversion to a total ankle replacement (TAR). This procedure is technically demanding given the altered anatomy after arthrodesis. Few studies have evaluated TAR in the setting of prior arthrodesis.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What intraoperative and perioperative complications were observed in patients who underwent conversion of an ankle arthrodesis to a TAR? (2) Was durable fixation achieved at short term, and what was the alignment of the components

BACKGROUND: The "French Paradox" technique, one of the various femoral cementing techniques in total hip replacement, was developed by Marcel Kerboull at Cochin Hospital, Paris, in the 1960s. Its fundamental principles include removal of the cancellous bone, use of a highly polished and collared canal-filling stem, and a straightforward cementation technique. This technique differs from the taper-slip philosophy, which relies on controlled subsidence, and the composite-beam concept, which seeks rigid bonding between stem and cement to act as a single structural unit.

INTRODUCTION: Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (RAAA) can take place in one of the 4 following ways: 1. "Open" rupture in the free peritoneal cavity; 2. "Closed" rupture with formation of retroperitoneal haematoma; 3. Rupture into surrounding cavity structures, such as veins and bowels; 4. In rare cases rupture is effectively "sealed of" by the surrounding tissue reaction, and retroperitoneal haematoma is "chronically" contained [1]. The terms "sealed" [2], "spontaneously healed" [3], "leakig" [4] RAAA, were also used in the previous papers connected to this situation. The "sealed" ruptur

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority men (SMM) with HIV who use stimulants may experience greater difficulties with antiretroviral therapy adherence which amplifies risk for unsuppressed HIV viral load (VL). Remote monitoring of VL could support efforts to rapidly respond to sub-optimal adherence.
METHODS: This qualitative study enrolled 24 SMM with HIV who use stimulants to examine experiences with two different dried blood spots (DBS) self-sampling devices (i.e., Tasso-M20 vs. HemaSpot HD) to measure VL. Participants were asked to complete self-sampling of DBS using both devices, and then participat

BACKGROUND: Acute bronchiolitis is one of the most frequent causes of emergency department visits and hospitalisation in children. There is no specific treatment for bronchiolitis except for supportive treatment, which includes ensuring adequate hydration and oxygen supplementation. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) aims to widen the lungs' peripheral airways, enabling deflation of overdistended lungs in bronchiolitis. Increased airway pressure also prevents the collapse of poorly supported peripheral small airways during expiration. Observational studies report that CPAP is beneficia

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) can attenuates acute lung injury in mice with exertional heat stroke (EHS) by inhibiting ferroptosis.
METHODS: Sixty SPF-grade male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups: normal control group (control group), EHS model group (EHS group), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent group (EHS+DMSO group), and GPER-specific agonist G1 group (EHS+G1 group), with 15 mice in each group. All mice underwent 14 days of adaptive training at 24-26 centigrade before modeling, and the EHS model was established using a hi

More than 60 years of biochemical and biophysical studies have accustomed us to think of proteins as highly purified entities that act in isolation, more or less freely diffusing until they find their cognate partner to bind to. While in vitro experiments that reproduce these conditions largely remain the only way to investigate the intrinsic properties of molecules, this approach ignores an important factor: in their natural milieu , proteins are surrounded by several other molecules of different chemical nature, and this crowded environment can considerably modify their behaviour. About 40%
