Value of 123I/99mTc-sestamibi parathyroid scintigraphy with subtraction SPECT/CT in primary hyperparathyroidism for directing minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism/(PHPT) is one of the most common endocrinological conditions. Surgery remains the only curative option. We have evaluated the performance of double isotope 123I/99mTc-sestamibi parathyroid scintigraphy/(PS) with subtraction SPECT/CT in PHP for identifying uniglandular disease. METHODS: Ninety PHPT patients undergoing parathyroidectomy (December 2015-August 2016) were included. All patients were evaluated with neck ultrasound/(US), PS and SPECT/CT with a new protocol. Outcomes from imaging modalities were reported as: uniglandular disease/(UGD), multigla

Assessment of anatomical and dosimetric changes by a deformable registration method during the course of intensity-modulated radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The aim of this study was to quantify the anatomic variations and the dosimetric effects accessed by a deformable registration method throughout the entire course of radiotherapy, and to evaluate the necessity of replanning for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Plan1(CT1) was based on the original CT, and Plan2(CT2) was generated from the midtreatment CT scan acquired after 25 fractions of IMRT of Plan1. Both sets of CTs, RT structures and RT doses for the two group plans were transferred to a workstation, and then a hybrid IMRT plan, Plan1(CT2), was generated by deforming doses of

Validation of the reference tissue model for estimation of dopaminergic D2-like receptor binding with [18F](N-methyl)benperidol in humans.

Positron emission tomography measurements of dopaminergic D2-like receptors may provide important insights into disorders such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, dystonia and Tourette's syndrome. The positron emission tomography (PET) radioligand [18F](N-methyl)benperidol ([18F]NMB) has high affinity and selectivity for D2-like receptors and is not displaced by endogenous dopamine. The goal of this study is to evaluate the use of a graphical method utilizing a reference tissue region for [18F]-NMB PET analysis by comparisons to an explicit three-compartment tracer kinetic model and graphic

CRBP-III:lacZ expression pattern reveals a novel heterogeneity of vascular endothelial cells.

Vascular endothelial cells are structurally and functionally heterogeneous. However, the molecular basis of this heterogeneity remains poorly defined. We used subtractive and differential screening to identify genes that exhibit heterogeneous expression patterns among vascular endothelial cells. One such gene is cellular retinol binding protein III (CRBP-III/Rbp7). Analysis of the lacZ knockin line for this gene (CRBP-III:lacZ) revealed a novel organ-specific vascular endothelial expression pattern. LacZ was expressed in vascular endothelial cells in heart, skeletal muscle, adipose tissues, th

Clinical significance of the ophthalmic artery in carotid artery disease.

A total of 141 subjects with tight stenosis (> or = 75%) or occlusion of internal carotid artery were followed up at intervals 3-6 months regularly for 40 +/- 16 months. The direction of ophthalmic artery flow was used as a parameter of risk indicator on cerebral ischemic events. Eleven patients with bilateral carotid tight stenosis/occlusion were excluded in the analysis. Thus, the 130 carotid arteries were divided into three groups: (1) carotid artery with ipsilateral hemispheric TIA or stroke (85 patients), (2) carotid arteries with contralateral hemispheric TIA/stroke or VBI (15 patients),

Comparison of digital subtraction arteriography and conventional film screen subtraction arteriography for neuroradiology.

Sixty-nine patients with 91 separate abnormal findings were studied by both intra-arterial digital subtraction arteriography (ADSA) and conventional film screen subtraction arteriography (CFSA) in the same projection, with the same magnification. Digital subtraction arteriography has distinct advantages over CFSA in the form of reduced contrast utilization, better patient tolerance of arteriography because of reduced contrast concentration, superior contrast resolution, and rapid, on-line visualization of the abnormalities. Digital subtraction arteriography is limited by its availability in on

Anterolateral congenital tibial bowing: case report.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of congenital curvatures (bowing) of the tibia still represents a challenging problem for all pediatric orthopedic surgeons because of its unpredictable course, especially if pseudoarthrosis occurs after a pathologic fracture of the tibia. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a child affected by an isolated curvature of his left leg. The congenital malformation was discovered at birth and no other pathological clinical finding was present. The first x-ray showed the presence of a congenital curvature of the tibia of the antero-lateral type. He was born in anoth

Computer vision applied to dual-energy computed tomography images for precise calcinosis cutis quantification in patients with systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Although treatments have been proposed for calcinosis cutis (CC) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), a standardized and validated method for CC burden quantification is necessary to enable valid clinical trials. We tested the hypothesis that computer vision applied to dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) finger images is a useful approach for precise and accurate CC quantification in SSc patients. METHODS: De-identified 2-dimensional (2D) DECT images from SSc patients with clinically evident lesser finger CC lesions were obtained. An expert musculoskeletal radiologist con

The relationship of older age and perioperative outcomes following thoracolumbar three-column osteotomy for adult spinal deformity: an analysis of 300 consecutive cases.

OBJECTIVE Three-column osteotomies are increasingly being used in the elderly population to correct rigid spinal deformities. There is hesitation, however, in performing the technique in older patients because of the high risk for blood loss, longer operative times, and complications. This study assesses whether age alone is an independent risk factor for complications and length of stay. METHODS All patients with thoracolumbar adult spinal deformity (ASD) who underwent 3-column osteotomy (vertebral column resection or pedicle subtraction osteotomy) performed by the senior author from 2006 to

A method to improve visual similarity of breast masses for an interactive computer-aided diagnosis environment.

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a method for selecting "visually similar" regions of interest depicting breast masses from a reference library to be used in an interactive computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) environment. A reference library including 1000 malignant mass regions and 2000 benign and CAD-generated false-positive regions was established. When a suspicious mass region is identified, the scheme segments the region and searches for similar regions from the reference library using a multifeature based k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm. To improve selection of reference i
