[The effect of multimodal pathogenetic therapy on microcirculatory function in combined craniocerebral trauma].

It is known that severe combined maxillocranial trauma causes impairment of microcirculatory vessels of bulbar conjunctiva as well as changes of local (cervical) and systemic blood flow, prevailing on the side of injury. New trigeminosympathetic regional block was used to produce chemical neurotomy of sympathetic and parasympathetic portions of autonomous nervous system in the neck. This blockade induced positive changes of minute CBF and microcirculation of CNS and facial area. Modified trigeminal sympathetic regional blockade along with intravenous infusion of dimephosphone improves both mic

Fine-tuning control of testicular functions.

The effect of testicular administration of peptides synthesized in the testis (somatostatin, oxytocin) or peptide antagonists (opioid receptor antagonists naloxone, nalmefene, anti-corticotrop hormone-releasing hormone antiserum, beta-endorphin antiserum), partial denervation of the testis, and combination of local treatment with peptides/peptide antagonists and denervation was studied on testicular steroidogenesis in immature hemicastrated rats. The observations indicate that beta-endorphin, corticotrop hormone-releasing hormone, oxytocin, and somatostatin exert a stimulatory, whereas enkepha

Myocardial sympathetic denervation prevents chamber-specific alteration of beta-adrenergic transmembrane signaling in rabbits with heart failure.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of myocardial sympathetic denervation on the chamber-specific alteration of beta-adrenergic signaling in left ventricular failure in rabbits. BACKGROUND: Local abnormalities in sympathetic nerve terminals, including the neuronal reuptake of norepinephrine, are thought to be responsible for the chamber-specific regulation of beta-adrenergic signaling in heart failure. METHODS: Sixteen rabbits were given 6-hydroxydopamine, 25 mg/kg body weight intravenously on days 1 and 2 and 50 mg/kg intravenously on days 7 and 8. Another 16 rabb

[Vagus nerve tonus].

The majority of investigators claim that the cause of vagotomic tachycardia is switching off the vagus nerve inhibitory tone, according to other authors the sympathetic nervous system stimulation is responsible for it. The second hypothesis is confirmed by the fact that vagotomic tachycardia is arrested by surgical desympathization in animals. Our data confirm this statement. We have ascertained that vagotomic tachycardia may be decreased by a surgical intervention without desympathization in animals. Artificial lung ventilation exerts the same effect on vagotomic tachycardia. Vagus tone depen

Beat-to-beat variation of heart rate in diabetic patients with autonomic neuropathy and in completely cardiac denervated patients following orthotopic heart transplantation.

Dysfunction of the vagal nerve, an early symptom in the development of autonomic neuropathy, can be assessed reliably by the beat-to-beat variation in heart rate. Patients after a cardiac transplantation are a unique model to investigate the beat-to-beat variation of a completely denervated heart. Heart rate and the beat-to-beat variation during normal and deep respiration were investigated in diabetic subjects with an autonomic neuropathy (n = 10), age and sex matched healthy controls (n = 10) and cardiac transplanted patients (n = 10). Further studies during pharmacological blockade of the p

Light-microscopic localization of somatostatin binding sites in the locus coeruleus of the rat.

Somatostatin (SS14) binding sites within locus coeruleus (LC) were localized at the light microscope level by [125I][Tyr0,D-Trp8]SS14 radioautography combined with an immunohistochemical/neurotoxic lesioning approach. In intact rats, the dense accumulation of SS14 binding sites of LC conspicuously overlapped with the cluster of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactive neurons; SS14 specific binding was directly proportional to the number of TH immunostained (TH+) cell bodies per mg of tissue throughout LC. Complete lesion of catecholaminergic nerve cell bodies of LC by intracerebroventricular

Hypoxic modulation of systolic blood pressure and urinary sodium excretion in spontaneously hypertensive rats after carotid body denervation.

To explore the role of arterial chemoreceptors, the effect of hypobaric hypoxia on urinary sodium excretion and systolic blood pressure was investigated in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with carotid body denervation (CBD) or after sham-operation (SO). Denervation of the carotid bodies was performed by section of the carotid sinus nerves. Exposure to hypobaric hypoxia equivalent to high altitude of 4000 m led to a more pronounced decrease in systolic blood pressure in CBD-rats than in SO-rats. The pattern of urinary sodium excretion observed on the first two days of hypoxia in

Renal vascular responses to saralasin in conscious chemically denervated rabbits and patients with tetraplegia.

To determine the relative contributions of direct angiotensin-II-like myotropism and sympathetic nerve stimulation to the partial agonist effect of saralasin, the renal vascular responses to i.v. saralasin (5, 10, 20 micrograms/kg/min) were assessed in normal conscious rabbits before and after sympatholytic treatment with guanethidine (24 mg/kg/day for 9 days) and in 6 chronic tetraplegic patients (0.5, 1, 5 micrograms/kg/min) before and after alpha-adrenoreceptor blockade with i.v. thymoxamine (1 mg/kg/h). In rabbits saralasin reduced effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and glomerular filtrati

Effects of sympathomodulation on pulse wave properties in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

AIMS: One important contributor to the pathogenesis and perpetuation of HFpEF is unfavorable pulse wave reflection, frequently caused by increased arterial stiffness, due to aging and longstanding hypertension. One possible path to address pathological wave reflections is reducing sympathetic overactivity via renal denervation (RDN) with the aim to enhance arterial compliance. We sought to non-invasively quantify pulse wave reflections changes in patients undergoing RDN. METHODS: Patients who underwent RDN for resistant hypertension were classified as patients with HFpEF and patients without

The role of neuromodulation in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a clinical syndrome with limited treatment options to improve long-term outcomes such as quality of life, exercise capacity, and mortality. Neuromodulation-based therapies have emerged as potential interventions to address autonomic dysregulation in HFpEF. This review discusses the long-term efficacy and safety of four key neuromodulation therapies: Renal Denervation (RDN), Baroreceptor Activation Therapy (BAT), Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), and Greater Splanchnic Nerve (GSN) Ablation. Each therapy shows promise, but variab

Long-term outcomes after catheter-based renal artery denervation for resistant hypertension: final follow-up of the randomised SYMPLICITY HTN-3 Trial.

BACKGROUND: The SYMPLICITY HTN-3 (Renal Denervation in Patients With Uncontrolled Hypertension) trial showed the safety but not efficacy of the Symplicity system (Medtronic, Santa Rosa, CA, USA) at 6 months follow-up in patients with treatment-resistant hypertension. This final report presents the 36-month follow-up results. METHODS: SYMPLICITY HTN-3 was a single-blind, multicentre, sham-controlled, randomised clinical trial, done in 88 centres in the USA. Adults aged 18-80 years, with treatment-resistant hypertension on stable, maximally tolerated doses of three or more drugs including a diu

Outcomes following cardiac sympathetic denervation in patients with structural heart disease and refractory ventricular arrhythmia.

AIM: Cardiac sympathetic denervation (CSD) has been introduced as a bailout therapy in patients with structural heart disease and refractory ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), but available data are scarce. Purpose of this study was to estimate immediate results, complications, and mid-term outcomes of CSD following recurrent VA after catheter ablation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Adult patients who underwent CSD in the Heart Center Leipzig from March 2017 to February 2021 were retrospectively analysed. Follow-up (FU) was executed via implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) interrogation, telephone
