Atypical neural activation and age-related patterns in dyslexia.

This magnetoencephalography study investigated the spatiotemporal neural responses during single-word reading. We used a silent reading task with linguistic stimuli varying in lexicality and frequency (high- and low-frequency words, and pseudowords), and tested typically developing (TD) and dyslexic developing (DD) children (aged 7 to 12). We observed no significant sensitivity to word frequency or lexicality either within or between the groups, likely reflecting the constraints of the silent reading paradigm. Direct comparisons between the groups revealed significant amplitude reductions in t

Internal Bayesian precision modulates the neural representation of social attention: Disentangling implicit and explicit components via model-informed multivariate EEG analysis.

Social attention integrates sensory cues with high-level cognitive expectations, yet the generative mechanisms through which implicit orienting and explicit belief-driven modulation interact remain poorly understood. This ambiguity complicates the distinction between specialized social modules and domain-general attentional processes. We combined a dynamic cueing task with hierarchical Bayesian modeling and model-informed multivariate EEG decoding to address this. Behavioral results revealed a computational double dissociation: symbolic arrow cues elicited heterogeneous strategies, whereas ave

Case report: Movement-related neuroplasticity in a patient after spinal cord injury in response to task-oriented bimanual training.

BACKGROUND: Bimanual motor training is an effective neurological rehabilitation strategy. However, its use has rarely been investigated in patients with paralysis caused by spinal cord injury (SCI). Therefore, we conducted a case study to investigate the effects of robot-assisted task-oriented bimanual training (RBMT) on upper limb function, activities of daily living, and movement-related sensorimotor activity in a patient with SCI. METHODS: A patient with bilateral upper limb paresis due to incomplete cervical SCI underwent 20 sessions of RBMT. Functional recovery was measured using clinica

Time pressure alters takeoff but not landing biomechanics in single-leg countermovement jumps.

This study examined how time pressure influences lower-limb biomechanics during single-leg maximal countermovement jumps (CMJs), with a focus on kinetic and kinematic responses during both jumping and landing phases. Participants performed single-leg CMJs under two conditions: self-paced (SP) and reaction-time (RT), the latter simulating time-constrained environments. Joint angles, ground reaction forces (vGRF), and joint moments were analyzed. Significant differences emerged between SP and RT tasks in jumping-phase kinetics and kinematics, with only kinematic differences present during landin

Multicriteria decision model for ranking the performance of remote work activities: Case study in a call center company in Brazil.

Background: The world has rapidly experienced a shift in the work environment due to a global need brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the recognition of the advantages that remote work presents for companies engaged in processes and customer service. However, not all employees exhibit the same level of adaptation and performance while carrying out their tasks outside the organization's premises. In this scenario, multicriteria decision analysis emerges as a tool to support the decision-making process in prioritizing employees with the best profile for carrying out telecommuting activit

A hyper-activatable CAMK2A variant associated with intellectual disability causes exaggerated long-term potentiation and learning impairments.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) characterized by impairments in intellectual and adaptive functioning, and is highly co-morbid with other NDDs. Recently, de novo missense variants in the gene, CAMK2A, which encodes calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIα (CaMKIIα), an abundant neuronal protein crucial for synaptic plasticity, learning and memory, have been implicated in ID. However, the causative impact of these mutations remains underexplored. In this study, we developed a heterozygous knock-in mouse model carrying the most prevalent ID-associated C

Do emotional and social primers change the pessimism in collective future thinking? Testing the robustness of the collective negativity bias.

People are not optimistic about the future of the USA. When reporting their thoughts about the future, people express more worries than excitement, a phenomenon known as the collective negativity bias, and widely replicated among people residing in the USA. However, we do not know whether this bias is malleable. In this study, we tested whether prior exposure to valenced examples of collective future projections - attributed to an unknown source or a social source - shifts the valence of collective future thinking. In Experiment 1, participants completed an unrelated task (standard control con

A systematic review of social and interpersonal factors associated with perinatal body image and eating concerns.

Disordered eating behaviours and cognitions among pregnant and postpartum women are prevalent public health concerns which can adversely impact mothers, infants and families. While such issues are often linked with the sociocultural environment and interpersonal relationships, these factors are under-researched. The aim of this mixed-methods review was to identify social and interpersonal factors that may protect against or increase the risk of perinatal disordered eating and body image concerns. Following PRISMA reporting guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across MEDLINE, PsycINFO,

Enhanced YOLOv8 for accurate and efficient floating object detection on water surfaces.

Detecting floating objects on water surfaces is critical for environmental monitoring and pollution control. We present SEDS-YOLOv8, an enhanced YOLOv8n variant that integrates Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention, Distribution Shift Convolution (DSConv), and Enhanced Intersection over Union (EIoU) loss to address challenges in complex aquatic environments. These environments are characterized by surface reflections, ripple-induced noise, and dense small debris that complicate accurate detection. We trained and evaluated our model on a hybrid dataset of 28,000 images with data augmentation fo

Autonomous vehicles with augmented reality internet of things and edge intelligence system for industry 5.0 based on 6G.

In an era of rapidly evolving technology, traditional cloud computing struggles to meet the demands of resource-intensive smart devices. This necessitates a shift towards Edge Computing (EC), which brings computation and data storage closer to the network's edge, enhancing efficiency and reducing latency. This is particularly crucial for the Internet of Things (IoT), where supporting mobility, location awareness, and real-time processing are paramount. However, the scalability of EC applications is significantly influenced by network parameters and the capabilities of the computing system. Thi

Mapping and modeling age-related changes in intrinsic neural timescales.

Intrinsic timescales of brain regions exhibit heterogeneity, escalating with hierarchical levels, and are crucial for the temporal integration of external stimuli. Aging, often associated with cognitive decline, involves progressive neuronal and synaptic loss, reshaping brain structure and dynamics. However, the impact of these structural changes on temporal coding in the aging brain remains unclear. We mapped intrinsic timescales and gray matter volume (GMV) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in young and elderly adults. We found shorter intrinsic timescales across multiple large-scale fu

The impact of alcohol on brain response in social context: A hyperscanning alcohol-administration trial.

Evidence for the integration of alcohol into social life dates to the beginning of recorded history. Humans' tendency to combine social interaction with alcohol has been attributed to alcohol's ability to shift social perception, with behavioral research suggesting alcohol fosters social connection and diminishes perceived social threat. Yet the acute effects of alcohol on brain responses in social context are as yet unexplored. Combining experimental alcohol-administration with an EEG hyperscanning paradigm, the current study examines the effect of alcohol on evaluation of self- and other-lin

A novel cost-benefit decision-making task involving cued punishment; effects of sex and psychostimulant administration.

Chronic substance use is associated with alterations in multiple forms of cost-benefit decision making, which may prolong and exacerbate continued use. Cues that predict reward can cause substantial shifts in a variety of reward-directed behavior, including decision making. In contrast, how decision making is modulated by cues predictive of punishment is much less well understood. To begin to address these issues, male and female Long-Evans rats were tested in a novel decision-making task in which they chose between a small, "safe" reward and a large reward that was punished by a mild footshoc

Cocaine polydrug use and its impact on intentional harm recognition: a high-density EEG study.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine and stimulant consumption constitute a significant global issue and are associated with impaired social skills. However, the relationship between substance abuse and intentional harm recognition remains unclear. Intentional harm recognition is a crucial social cognitive ability that allows individuals to determine whether a harmful action performed by another person is deliberate or accidental. METHODS: The present study examined self-reported, behavioural, and neural responses associated with intentional harm recognition in n = 19 cocaine polydrug users (COC) and n = 19 h

Visual agnosia in the era of behavioral and neural investigations.

Single case studies have long been used to provide insights into the mechanisms underlying normal cognition, including in the domains of memory, language and visuoperceptual function, and standardized testing has been a steadfast companion in such investigations. Experimental approaches designed to address specific hypotheses have also been conducted and analytic methods have been developed for the comparison of single subject data to a control group. However, a seismic shift has occurred in the last decade or two in which neuroimaging, primarily magnetic resonance imaging, has been added to t

Predictors of psychomotor vigilance improvement after a 6-day recovery period in firefighters.

This study investigated predictors of psychomotor vigilance recovery across a six-day inter-tour rest period separating two consecutive duty tours in a sample of career firefighters. Thirty-five firefighters [M age: 38 yrs (SD = 9.2 yrs)] took psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) tests at the beginning of a six-day recovery period and after beginning their next tour; each tour consisted of five, non-consecutive, 24-hour shifts. During the recovery period, subjects wore a wrist-worn actigraph (Actiwatch-2) and completed a sleep diary. Mixed analysis of covariance was employed to test whether change

Virtual reality interactions via a user-generic ultrasound human-machine interface for wrist and hand tracking.

As computers move from desktop screens into our glasses, traditional controllers such as keyboards and mice have proven impractical. A control interface for immersive experiences needs to seamlessly transport intention from the real to the virtual world while remaining portable, accurate, and robust. Here, we present an easy-to-wear, dry-contact and portable ultrasound armband that can decode morphological information and act as a virtual reality controller by predicting hand and wrist kinematics. Using our armband, we collected a large dataset of paired ultrasound and hand kinematics and used
