Dental implants provide a good solution for the replacement of tooth roots. However, the full restoration of tooth functions relies on the bone-healing period before positioning the abutment and the crown on the implant, with the associated risk of post-operative infection. This study aimed at developing a homogeneous and adherent thin calcium phosphate antibacterial coating on titanium dental implants by electrodeposition to favor both implant osseointegration and to limit peri-implantitis. By combining global (XRD, FTIR-ATR, elemental titration) and local (SEM, Raman spectroscopy on the coat

BACKGROUND: The "socket-shield technique" has shown its potential in preserving buccal tissues. However, front teeth often have to be extracted due to vertical fractures in buccolingual direction. It has not yet been investigated if the socket-shield technique can only be used with intact roots or also works with a modified shield design referring to vertical fracture lines.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess histologically, clinically, and volumetrically the effect of separating the remaining buccal root segment in two pieces before immediate implant placement.

AIM: The aim of this study was to measure, in adults, changes in crest bone level around single dental implants in the anterior maxilla and continuous eruption of adjacent teeth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 50 patients received single-implant-supported crowns in the maxillary anterior region. Enrolled patients lacked maxillary anterior teeth as a sequel to trauma or agenesis in the maxillary anterior region. Participants were followed during a 3-year period. Baseline radiographs were taken at the time of loading and then repeated at one- and 3-year recalls. Radiographic p

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease often results in severely bony defects around the teeth and leads to eventual extraction. Remaining bone morphology often compromises ideally restoration-driven positions and deteriorates the success rates for dental implants.
PURPOSE: The present investigation illustrates the clinical outcome of immediately installing an implant following orthodontic forced eruption and atraumatic extraction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subject of this study is a 40-year-old Asian female with a right mandibular first molar that had a deep probing depth on the mesial side and mo

Enamel and dentin are susceptible to extrinsic and intrinsic stains. The purposes of this study were to determine the penetration pattern of Rhodamine B and dextran-conjugated Rhodamine B into the enamel and dentin as observed by confocal laser microscopy and to relate it to the penetration pattern of hydrogen peroxide commonly used as an active ingredient in tooth-whitening agents and high-molecular-weight staining molecules. Eighteen recently extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were used. Teeth were cleaned and painted with nail varnish except for the crown area above the cemento-enamel

Teeth adopt a variety of different morphologies, each of which is presumably optimized for performing specific functions during feeding. It is generally agreed that the enamel cap is a crucial element in controlling the mechanical behavior of mammalian teeth under load. Incisors are particularly interesting in terms of structure-function relations, as their role in feeding is that of the 'first bite'. However, little is known how incisor cap morphology is related to tooth deformation. In the present paper we examine the mechanical behavior of mandibular central incisors in the cercopithecine p

Root resorption is an adverse outcome of orthodontic tooth movement. In addition to the iatrogenic response and compromising the crown-root ratio, root resorption has led to increased malpractice litigation against orthodontists. A clinically acceptable method of treating root resorption has not been validated in the literature to date. Previous research has shown that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) can enhance healing of various types of traumatized connective tissues and stimulate dental tissue formation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of LIPUS on the healing p

BACKGROUND: Maxillary canine impaction is the second most common dental eruption anomaly, affecting approximately 0.2-3% of individuals, with a higher incidence in females. This condition often results in complications such as the misalignment of adjacent teeth, root resorption, and the development of cystic lesions. In some cases, abstention is recommended for impacted canine is kept with the lacteal tooth held on the dental arch. But in the longer term an implant therapy is nevertheless indicated.

OBJECTIVE: Since categorization of dental crowding is a crucial parameter in orthodontic diagnosis and tooth-extraction decisions, we aimed to develop an automatic system to categorize crowding levels on intraoral photographs without space analysis.
METHODS: The Dental Crowding Categorization Network (DCC-Net), consisting of segmentation, extraction, and categorization modules, was proposed and optimized by extracting regions of interest and crown centroids. A multicenter dataset including 1,351 maxillary and 1,253 mandibular intraoral photographs was divided in an 8:2 ratio for model trainin

INTRODUCTION: The oral cavity is a rare site for other organs' tumor metastases. The incidence rate ranges from 1% to 3% of all oral malignancies. Metastases more frequently localize in the mandible, especially in the molar area. Metastases within odontogenic cysts are extremely rare, thus in the literature, only a few cases have been reported. The follicular cyst is one of the most frequent cysts of the jaws. Radiologically it shows as a unilocular lesion with a sclerotic border, characterized by a homogenous radiolucency that incorporates the crown of the unerupted tooth.
METHODS: A 76-year

PURPOSE: Superimposition of digital dental-arch models allows quantification of orthodontic tooth movements (OTM). Currently, this procedure requires stable reference surfaces usually only present in the maxilla. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of a novel superimposition approach based on biomechanical principles of OTM and the equilibrium of forces and moments (EFM)-applicable in both jaws-for monitoring and simulating large OTM.
METHODS: The study included 7 patients who had undergone extraction of the first (PM1-Ex) or second (PM2-Ex) premolar in each quadrant. Digital models

Dentigerous cysts may be of developmental or inflammatory origin. The latter occur in unerupted permanent teeth as a result of inflammation from a preceding non-vital primary tooth or from another source spreading to involve the tooth follicle. This report presents two clinical cases of children with dentigerous cysts of inflammatory origin. Case 1 is a healthy boy (7 years 11 months) referred for a large cystic cavity in the right mandibular premolar region. Extraction of 84 and 85 and marsupialization of the cyst were performed under nitrous sedation. A removable appliance with an acrylic pi

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The present article aims to describe and discuss the preventive clinical management of a pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) defect on a maxillary right second premolar of an 11-year, 5-month-old girl.
BACKGROUND: Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption is described as an abnormal, well-circumscribed, radiolucent area, occurring within the coronal dentinal tissue close to the dentinoenamel junction of unerupted teeth and extending into various depths of the dentin. It is a rare anomaly occurring in primary and permanent dentitions. In the past, these defects were misdi

The patient's facial characteristics play an essential role in achieving a customized smile restoration with appropriate individualized tooth shapes. By initially studying the patient's face, an approach can be determined to plan new individual tooth shapes to achieve a satisfactory outcome. The dental esthetic rehabilitation taking the facial proportion into account involves a complex planning process. To successfully realize such a project, several factors must be evaluated when designing the restoration, including dental alignment, crown dimension, color, occlusion, and facial proportions.

BACKGROUND: Tooth polishing is an integral part of clinical dentistry. The main purpose of polishing is to smoothen the surface of the tooth and minimize the deposition of plaque to allow a healthy periodontal maintenance postscaling. Today, polishing by different methods is available to a clinician. Traditional bristle brush and rubber-cup polishing are being widely practiced and gradually getting replaced by novel air polisher. Pros and cons of each method should be weighed before its clinical applications.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the efficiency of three different polish

The Hall Technique (HT) is a method for managing carious primary molars. Decay is sealed under pre-formed metal crowns without any caries removal, tooth preparation, or local anesthesia. The aim of this study was to compare HT clinical/radiographic failure rates with General Dental Practitioners' (GDPs) standard (control) restorations. We conducted a split-mouth, randomized control trial (132 children, aged 3-10 yrs, GDPs n = 17) in Scotland. There were 264 study teeth with initial lesions, 42% of which were radiographically > half-way into dentin, and 67% of which had Class II restorations. T
