Comparison of intermediate- and low-frequency shock wave lithotripsy for pediatric kidney stones.

The aim of the study to compare low and intermediate shock wave frequency rates in terms of success and complications for treating pediatric kidney stones. This retrospective study was performed on 58 consecutive pediatric patients (24 girls, 34 boys) who underwent shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) for kidney stones with an electrohydraulic lithotripter between April 2014 and March 2016. In the first year, all children underwent SWL with a frequency of 90 SWs/min as an intermediate frequency (Group 90), and in the second year all children were treated by SWL using 60 SWs/min as a low frequency (Gro

Ureteroscopy from the recent past to the near future.

Stone surgery is one of oldest surgical practices undertaken by man. Hippocrates refused to let his followers "cut for the stone" and it was only in February 1980, when the first human trial of shock wave therapy on a renal stone was performed with success that a new era in minimally invasive treatment (surgery) for stones was opened up and this condemnation was finally resolved in the Hippocratic Oath. Endoscopy, using natural orifices, supported by anaesthesia, incremented by technology and with access to all points along the urinary tract, began by competing with ESWL, but is now the treatm

Can Doppler ultrasonography twinkling artifact be used as an alternative imaging modality to non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography in patients with ureteral stones? A prospective clinical study.

We aimed to evaluate the use of twinkling artifact (TA) on color Doppler ultrasonography (USG) as an alternative imaging modality to non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) in patients with ureteral stones in this prospective study. Totally, 106 consecutive patients who had been diagnosed with ureterolithiasis by CT were enrolled in this prospective study. A urinary system color Doppler ultrasonography was performed on the same day with CT by an experienced radiologist who was blinded to the CT scan. TA was graded as 0, 1 and 2. The overall specificity of TA was calculated according to

Comparison of escalating, constant, and reduction energy output in ESWL for renal stones: multi-arm prospective randomized study.

This study was designed to find out the optimized energy delivery strategy in Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) that yield to the best stone-free rate (SFR). In this clinical trial, 150 consecutive patients were randomized into three groups: (a) Dose escalation, 1500 SW at 18 kV, followed by 1500 SW at 20 kV then 1500 SW at 22 kV. (b) Constant dose, 4500 SW at 20 kV. All patients undergo plain X-ray film of the urinary tract at day 1, 14, and 90 to assess stone-free rate (SFR) which was defined as no stones or painless fragments less than 4 mm. (c) Dose reduction, 1500 SW at 22 kV, followed by 1500

Ureteric stents on extraction strings: a systematic review of literature.

Short-term ureteric stents are commonly placed after ureteroscopy. The removal usually entails having a cystoscopy, but recently, endourologists have been using stents with extraction strings attached to them for ease of removal. We wanted to conduct a systematic review of literature looking at the outcomes of ureteric stents with extraction strings attached to them. Our objective was to investigate the use, morbidity, tolerability, complications, associated cost, and patient preference of stents with extraction strings attached to them. All studies in English language (between 1990 and 2015)

Mini-nephroscope combined with pressure suction: an effective tool in MPCNL for intrarenal stones in patients with urinary tract infections.

We report our experience with a mini-nephroscope connected to pressure suction as a modified minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MPCNL) technique to manage intrarenal stones in patients with a urinary tract infection (UTI). We used a mini-nephroscope connected to pressure suction to aspirate infected urine and reduce intrapelvic pressure. From January 2010 to June 2014, we treated 683 patients with intrarenal stones and UTI with this modified MPCNL technique in our department (Group A). Patients with an intrarenal stone and without UTI treated by this modified MPCNL (Group B, N =

Epidemiology of bladder stone of children: precipitating events.

Urological surgery evolved from the ancient practice of removing primary bladder stones from young boys. Bladder stones, once ubiquitous, long ago disappeared from the developed world while pockets of disease still exist in developing countries. Two epidemiological studies identified as precipitating events of bladder stone formation the practice of substitutive carbohydrate feedings to newborns. In Southeast Asia, masticated rice is fed to newborns in stone-endemic villages while in England, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries pap or panada was used to hand-feed infants when breast

Potential role of fluctuations in the composition of renal tubular fluid through the nephron in the initiation of Randall's plugs and calcium oxalate crystalluria in a computer model of renal function.

This article describes an updated computer model which attempts to simulate known renal reabsorption and secretion activity through the nephron (NEPHROSIM) and its possible relevance to the initiation of calcium-containing renal stones. The model shows that, under certain conditions of plasma composition, de novo nucleation of both calcium oxalate (CaOx) and calcium phosphate (CaP) can take place at the end of the descending limb of the Loop of Henle (DLH), particularly in untreated, recurrent idiopathic CaOx stone-formers (RSF). The model incorporates a number of hydrodynamic factors that may
