BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A detailed knowledge of the normal Magnetic Resonance (MR) anatomy of the vestibular endolymphatic space (ES) could be useful to understand the linkage between endolymphatic hydrops (EH) and Ménière's disease (MD). Our aim was to describe the MR anatomy of the vestibular ES as depicted by MR imaging in healthy ears.
METHODS: This report describes a single-center retrospective study. Three readers analyzed the healthy ears of 22 consecutive patients who had undergone MRI for unilateral sudden hearing loss. The readers described the vestibular ES based on a delayed post-

UNLABELLED: The midposterior fundus of the Sylvian fissure in the human brain is central to the cortical processing of vestibular cues. At least two vestibular areas are located at this site: the parietoinsular vestibular cortex (PIVC) and the posterior insular cortex (PIC). It is now well established that activity in sensory systems is subject to cross-modal attention effects. Attending to a stimulus in one sensory modality enhances activity in the corresponding cortical sensory system, but simultaneously suppresses activity in other sensory systems. Here, we wanted to probe whether such cros

CONCLUSION: It is suggested that the different results of rotational (video head impulse - vHIT) and caloric tests in patients with Ménière's disease (MD) may be a consequence of the physical enlargement of the membranous duct in the hydropic labyrinths in MD, causing a reduced response to caloric stimulation.
OBJECTIVES: There have been reports that the results of two tests of semicircular canal function, the caloric response and the responses to vHIT do not agree. This retrospective study at a tertiary referral hospital examined this disagreement.
METHODS: This study reviewed the data of 2

Virtual reality technologies are in wide use in sport psychology. An advantage of this kind of technology is the possibility to assess sportspeople's readiness to perform complex movements. This study is aimed at developing a method for the evaluation of vestibular function disturbances in young skaters. Such disturbances may occur while skaters are performing rotation movements. To achieve this goal, we induced a vection illusion, accompanied by virtual environment rotation in a CAVE virtual reality system. Vestibular disturbances were tested for two groups-professional skaters and people who

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a dominantly inherited genetic condition that clinically manifests through the appearance of multiple meningiomas, ependymomas and bilateral vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas) which lead to progressive hearing loss. Neovascularization is necessary for tumor growth and is driven by tumor-produced angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Bevacizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that neutralizes the activity of VEGF. Recent data have shown that VEGF is produced by schwannoma tumor cells. Bevacizumab treatment in

OBJECTIVE: To date, the majority of the vestibular schwannoma (VS) literature has focused on tumor control rates, facial nerve function and hearing preservation. Other factors that have been shown to significantly affect quality-of-life (QOL), such as dizziness, remain understudied. The primary objective of the current study is to investigate the association between radiation dose to the vestibule and post-treatment changes in vestibular function and patient reported dizziness handicap.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective observational pilot study at a tertiary academic referral cent

The aim of the present study was to explore the demographic, clinical, and pathogenetic features; and treatment outcomes of patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) who were negative upon positional testing at their first referral. A total of 133 patients presented with histories of BPPV but were negative, in our hands, upon positional testing. Patients were told to cease taking vestibular suppressant medication (if any) and were to return for re-examination when positional vertigo symptoms recurred. If BPPV was diagnosed, the appropriate repositioning maneuver was applied and

Vestibular schwannoma is a rare tumor, which is easily misdiagnosed. The authors presented a case of vestibular schwannoma in a 36-year-old woman. The clinical manifestations were recurrent vertigo, hearing loss of the left ear, and tinnitus. The pure tone audiometry threshold of the left ear was 45dBHL with air conduction, and 33 dBHL with bone conduction. A CT scan of the temporal bone region didn't show any abnormal finding. A MRI scan of the head showed nodule abnormal signal in the internal of left vestibular and the narrow of perilymphaticum gap in T2W1 + T2Flair. The initial diagnosis w

In order to maintain visual stability during self-motion, the brain needs to update any egocentric spatial representations of the environment. Here, we use a novel psychophysical approach to investigate how and to what extent the brain integrates visual, extraocular, and vestibular signals pertaining to this spatial update. Participants were oscillated sideways at a frequency of 0.63 Hz while keeping gaze fixed on a stationary light. When the motion direction changed, a reference target was shown either in front of or behind the fixation point. At the next reversal, half a cycle later, we test

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are caused by a short-latency reflex recorded from averaged electromyography from the sternocleidomastoid muscle evoked by intense auditory clicks. Besides peripheral vestibulopathy, abnormal VEMPs can be caused by lesions of the brainstem. The aim of this study was to analyze the topology of ischemic brain lesions generating pathological VEMPs.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with brainstem infarcts were prospectively studied using VEMPs and MR imaging to evaluate the brainstem representation of the VEMP reflex. Individual brainstem lesi

CONCLUSION: When combined with vestibular dysfunction, visual flow can exacerbate reductions in postural stability. This effect may be one of the mechanisms underlying visual vertigo, which can be evaluated using frequency analysis of body sway elicited by optokinetic stimulation (OKS).
OBJECTIVE: To clarify the interaction between the postural responses to visual flow and to input from the vestibular apparatus as a mediator of visual vertigo.
METHODS: Horizontal and vertical OKS with a stable fixation target were presented to 14 healthy subjects and 38 peripheral vestibular patients standin
