Inflammatory cascades driven by tumor necrosis factor-alpha play a major role in the progression of acute liver failure and its neurological complications.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acute liver failure (ALF) due to ischemic or toxic liver injury is a clinical condition that results from massive loss of hepatocytes and may lead to hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a serious neuropsychiatric complication. Although increased expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in liver, plasma and brain has been observed, conflicting results exist concerning its roles in drug-induced liver injury and on the progression of HE. The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic value of etanercept, a TNF-α neutralizing molecule, on the progression of liver injury

Anterior interhemispheric approach for 100 tumors in and around the anterior third ventricle.

OBJECTIVE: We report our experience with anterior interhemispheric approach for tumors in and around the anterior third ventricle, including surgical technique, instrumentation, pre- and postoperative hormonal disturbances, and resection rate. METHODS: One hundred patients with 46 craniopharyngiomas, 12 hypothalamic gliomas, 12 meningiomas, 6 hypothalamic hamartomas, and 24 other lesions were operated on using an anterior interhemispheric approach with or without opening of the lamina terminalis. This surgical approach involves no frontal sinus opening; a narrow (approximately 15-20 mm in wid

Effects of N-acetyl-cysteine treatment on glutathione depletion and a short-term spatial memory deficit in 2-cyclohexene-1-one-treated rats.

Glutathione (GSH) is the primary antioxidant in the body and is present in high levels in the brain. Levels of GSH and other antioxidants are significantly altered in major psychiatric illnesses, such as schizophrenia. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated that chronic treatment with N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC), a GSH precursor, improved symptoms in individuals with this illness. We previously showed in rats and mice that depletion of GSH by treatment with 2-cyclohexene-1-one (CHX) induced short-term spatial memory deficits in the Y-maze test. The aim of present study was to characterise the

Greater activation in left hemisphere language-related regions during simple judgment tasks among substance-dependent patients in treatment for alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholism is often associated with impaired emotional control. Alcoholics have also been found to have deficits in frontal lobe executive functions. Recent functional imaging studies have suggested that alcoholics show greater activation than nonalcoholics in circuits involving frontal lobes, as well as more posterior brain regions, when engaged in executive-type tasks. In this study, we compared brain activations of alcohol-dependent patients and healthy nonalcoholics while they performed 2 simple judgment tasks designed to activate frontal circuits involved in a basic form of de

Endothelial cells constituting blood-nerve barrier have highly specialized characteristics as barrier-forming cells.

In autoimmune disorders of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, breakdown of the blood-nerve barrier (BNB) has been considered as a key step in the disease process. Hence, it is important to know the cellular property of peripheral nerve microvascular endothelial cells (PnMECs) constituting the bulk of BNB. Although many in vitro models of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) have been established, very few in vitro BNB models have been reported so far. We isolated PnMECs from transgenic rats harboring the t

Multiple Epidermal Cysts of the Scalp: Dermatosurgical Approach with Favourable Outcome!

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cysts are subcutaneous tissue formations that are most commonly located in the area of scalp, trunk and face. In addition to single ones, the cysts may also be multiple, located near each other. Although they are considered to be a cystic ectasia of the hair infundibulum and mainly affect hairy parts, they can also be seen in the area of palms and feet as a result of trauma. Rare extracutaneous localisations are also described in the medical literature, affecting the oral cavity, intraosseous, cerebrum and sublingual epidermoid cyst. Although the majority of epidermal cys…

Modeling, experiment, and validation of a piglet head.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent type of disabling and fatal injury in infants/toddlers, which is usually caused by falls or traffic accidents. Considering that it is difficult to collect realistic material properties and validation data of child heads due to ethical reasons, experiments on the piglet heads and the finite element (FE) models are generally used as a substitute for the investigations of child TBI. METHODS: In this study, first, a high-quality FE model of a 4-week-old piglet head, including brain (cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem), skull, soft tissue, cer…

Analysis of the superficial middle cerebral vein in sphenoid ridge meningioma using contrast-enhanced dynamic computed tomography angiography.

OBJECTIVE: The superficial middle cerebral vein (SMCV) is of clinical importance because of its contribution to the venous drainage of the superficial part of the cerebrum. Sphenoid ridge meningioma (SRM) grows adjacent to the SMCV and its drainage routes, and is thought to occasionally influence the hemodynamics of the SMCV, although this has seldom been suggested in the literature. We investigated the effect of SRM on the SMCV via blood flow analysis using multi-detector computed tomography. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Overall, 22 patients with SRM who preoperatively underwent contrast-enhanced d…

Abnormal Interhemispheric Synchrony in Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy: A Retrospective Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal interhemispheric synchrony has been described in many clinical compromises in brain function, but its prognostic value in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed at describing the frequency of abnormal interhemispheric synchrony in infants with HIE and to explore its prognostic value. The main outcome was survival without major disabilities. METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study and enrolled 40 neonates with HIE who underwent hypothermia. RESULTS: Abnormal interhemispheric synchrony was observed i

Perturbed Wnt signaling leads to neuronal migration delay, altered interhemispheric connections and impaired social behavior.

Perturbed neuronal migration and circuit development have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental diseases; however, the direct steps linking these developmental errors to behavior alterations remain unknown. Here we demonstrate that Wnt/C-Kit signaling is a key regulator of glia-guided radial migration in rat somatosensory cortex. Transient downregulation of Wnt signaling in migrating, callosal projection neurons results in delayed positioning in layer 2/3. Delayed neurons display reduced neuronal activity with impaired afferent connectivity causing permanent deficit in call

Left hemisphere fractional anisotropy increase in noise-induced tinnitus: a diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) study of white matter tracts in the brain.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a contemporary neuroimaging modality used to study connectivity patterns and microstructure of white matter tracts in the brain. The use of DTI in the study of tinnitus is a relatively unexplored methodology with no studies focusing specifically on tinnitus induced by noise exposure. In this investigation, participants were two groups of adults matched for etiology, age, and degree of peripheral hearing loss, but differed by the presence or absence (+/-) of tinnitus. It is assumed that matching individuals on the basis of peripheral hearing loss, allows for di
