Intercropping is a promising sustainable agriculture practice, but its adoption is hindered by the potential reduction in benefits when shifting from monoculture to intercropping, especially if there are trade-offs between yield, soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. In this study, we synthesized 3843 paired observations from 510 field-based studies that compared the yields, SOC and N2O emissions of intercropping systems (only crop-crop intercropping for grain yield and including crop-tree agroforestry in addition to crop-crop intercropping for SOC and N2O) with monocult

BACKGROUND: Research on extreme heat has predominantly focused on acute heatwaves, obscuring the mental health risks of cumulative heat exposure for aging populations. As a proactive public health intervention, preventive health services represent a critical but underexamined dimension of community resilience to climate-related health risks. This study examines the relationships between cumulative heat exposure and depressive symptoms among older adults and explores whether preventive health services utilization attenuates this risk.
METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 7,464 older adu

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence suggests that higher ambient temperatures may increase the risk of mental health disorders and exacerbate existing conditions. Despite this, most studies evaluating the association between temperature and mental health rely on hospitalisation records or insurance claims data, which only capture the most severe outcomes. To effectively intervene to prevent mental health crises associated with ambient temperature, it is necessary to identify and develop novel ways to reach patients before they require care. Digital health tools offer a promising way to address thes

Rising carbon emissions have intensified global climate change, creating an urgent need for innovative solutions that generate value while also reducing emissions. Carbon capture, conversion, and utilization (CCCU) is a transformational technique that captures and converts CO2 from energy and industrial sources into valuable fuels, chemicals, and materials. This review examines the current state of CCCU technologies, highlighting innovative materials including solvents, solid sorbents, and membranes, as well as main CO2 capture methodologies like pre-combustion, post-combustion, and oxy-fuel c

Temperate forests are key terrestrial carbon sinks, yet their capacity to sequester carbon is often limited by nitrogen (N), a nutrient whose availability is declining in many ecosystems. Among factors contributing to declining N availability, climate-driven changes in soil hydrology could force N loss via the emission of both nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O); however, forecasting these losses is challenging because they are regulated by soil moisture, a factor that regulates microbial activity and substrate availability but varies significantly across space and time. Here, we ask: ho

Across the circumarctic, permafrost landscapes store approximately 1700 billion metric tons of organic carbon-nearly twice atmospheric levels-yet reservoir stability depends on the zero-curtain, a subsurface thermal plateau that emerges when latent heat maintains soil temperatures near 0 °C during freeze-thaw phase transitions. The zero-curtain sustains liquid water through cryosuction within the active layer, enabling microbial activity to persist well into the cold season and regulating permafrost thermal stability. However, zero-curtain intensity, duration, and spatial extent remain inadequ

BACKGROUND: Extreme rainfall is expected to intensify with climate change, yet short-term health effects can plausibly be harmful (flooding, contamination, access disruption) or protective (pollution washout, cooling). Robust, comparable evidence at national scale is scarce for Brazil.
OBJECTIVE: We analyzed daily mortality for all-cause, cardiovascular, respiratory, and infectious outcomes across all Brazilian municipalities from 2003-2023.
METHODS: Rainfall extremes were defined hydrologically using regional frequency analysis. In the first stage, we fit state-level conditional quasi-Poiss

Climate-linked heatwaves and dust storms can exacerbate non-communicable disease (NCD) morbidity, yet quantitative evidence from displacement settings remains limited. We assessed short-term impacts of heat and dust events on symptom burden among Syrian refugees with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Jordan's Zaatari Camp. We conducted a prospective study of 660 adults receiving care at King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Clinics (KS-Relief) clinics in Zaatari across three periods aligned to seasonal heatwaves. Self-reported symptoms following heatwaves and dust storms were collected via

Efforts to mitigate climate change through CO₂ emissions reduction must be balanced with achieving social progress sustainably and equitably. Yet, their interlinkages remain insufficiently understood across global contexts. This study uses a multi-method diagnostic to find structural inconsistencies between emissions and social progress across income levels, extending beyond correlation analyses. This study examines the associations between total CO2 emissions and 55 Social Progress Indicators (SPIs) across 160 countries from 2011 to 2023. Unlike traditional Environmental Kuznets Curve interpr

Agriculture serves as both a source and a sink of global greenhouse gases (GHGs), with agricultural intensification continuing to contribute to GHG emissions. Climate-smart agriculture, encompassing both nature- and technology-based actions, offers promising solutions to mitigate GHG emissions. We synthesized global data, between 1990 and 2021, from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to analyze the impacts of agricultural activities on global GHG emissions from agricultural land, using structural equation modeling. We then obtained predictive estimates of agricul

Farm dams are significant methane (CH4) sources in agricultural landscapes. Fencing them to limit livestock access reduces organic matter and nutrient inputs, thereby limiting CH4 emissions. However, existing studies on the benefits of fencing are constrained by short durations, omission of ebullitive fluxes, limited spatial and temporal coverage, and small sample sizes. Here, we report a large-scale, multi-season assessment of total CH4 (diffusive + ebullitive) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from fenced and unfenced farm dams, along key environmental drivers. We monitored 113 farm dams in te

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios run by an ensemble of models developed by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) projects an average sea level rise (SLRs) of 0.6 to 1.2 m for the low and high emission scenarios (SSP1-1.9, SSP5-8.5), during the next century (IPCC 2021). The coastal zone will experience an increase in the flooding of terrestrial habitats and the depth of marine productive areas, with potential negative consequences for these ecosystems. The coast in Denmark is highly modified due to anthropogenic uses. Dikes, dams, and other coastal infrastru

BACKGROUND: Increasingly intense weather anomalies associated with interannual climate variability patterns, like El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO), could exacerbate the occurrence and transmission of infectious diseases. However, research in China remains limited in understanding the impacts and intermediate weather changes of ENSO on bacillary dysentery (BD). This study aimed to reveal the relationship between ENSO, weather conditions, and the incidence of BD, and to identify the potential meteorological pathways moderated by ENSO in the ENSO-BD connections.

Hazardous thermal conditions resulting from climate change may play a role in cardiovascular disease development. We chose the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) as the exposure metric to evaluate the relationship between thermal conditions and cardiovascular mortality in Shenzhen, China. We applied quasi-Poisson regression non-linear distributed lag models to evaluate the exposure-response associations. The findings suggest that cardiovascular mortality risks were significantly increased under heat and cold stress, and the adverse effects of cold stress were stronger than heat stress. Ref

The spatial distribution of dengue and its vectors (spp. Aedes) may be the widest it has ever been, and projections suggest that climate change may allow the expansion to continue. However, less work has been done to understand how climate variability and change affects dengue in regions where the pathogen is already endemic. In these areas, the waxing and waning of immunity has a large impact on temporal dynamics of cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Here, we use 51 years of data across 72 provinces and characterise spatiotemporal patterns of dengue in Thailand, where dengue has caused almos

Vector-borne diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Aedes-borne diseases, in particular, including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, are increasing at an alarming rate due to urbanisation, population movement, weak vector control programmes, and climate change. The World Health Organization calls for strengthening of vector control programmes in line with the Global Vector Control Response (GVCR) strategy, and many vector control programmes are transitioning to this new approach. The Singapore dengue control programme, situated within the country's larger v
