Case Report: EPD-assisted "Open Umbrella" retrieval of a migrated traumatic intravascular foreign body.

Intravascular foreign bodies (IFBs) resulting from penetrating trauma pose significant clinical challenges due to their irregular geometry, thrombogenicity, and propensity for distal migration. While endovascular snare retrieval is the established standard for smooth, tubular iatrogenic objects, it often fails when fragments lie flush against the vessel wall. We report the case of a 71-year-old male who sustained a penetrating injury to the left femoral artery by a metallic fragment. During initial surgical repair at a local hospital, the fragment migrated distally. Computed tomography angiogr

Synchrotron X-ray tomography and spectroscopy in numismatics: disclosing counterfeit practices in medieval silver coins.

This study explores the use of advanced synchrotron radiation (SR)-based imaging and spectroscopic techniques to investigate the distribution and nature of mercury (Hg) in numismatic artifacts, with a particular focus on its role in historical counterfeiting practices. A selection of medieval silver coins exhibiting anomalous surface Hg signals, initially identified through portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, were further examined using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography (SR-µCT), micro-X-ray spectroscopy (SR

Hypertuned boosting approach with Local Binary Pattern and Pivot Distribution Count method feature extractor for glaucoma identification.

Glaucoma, the second largest cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, causes significant damage to the optic nerve. Early diagnosis of glaucoma is crucial since without it, there will be continuous deterioration of vision. Manual detection of glaucoma based on fundus images is a tedious and potentially inaccurate process, making it important to develop computer-aided glaucoma detection systems. This paper introduces a hybrid approach to glaucoma detection that involves the use of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Pivot Distribution Count (PDC) feature extraction methods for the analysis of reti

Anatomical modeling of visceral afferent innervation in the rodent stomach.

Understanding the sensory nervous system's precise innervation of visceral organs remains a major challenge in systems neuroscience, particularly for designing neuromodulatory therapies. Here, we introduce a digital twin of the rodent stomach that combines high-resolution structural images and nerve-specific mapping onto a common coordinate scaffold. Using a pipeline developed within the NIH SPARC (Stimulate Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions) framework, we used immunohistochemistry (fluorescence and chromogenic) and anterograde tracing to label Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) ax

Single-cell sequencing-guided discovery of narciclasine as a dual VCAM-1/ICAM-1 inhibitor for atherosclerosis management.

Atherosclerosis (AS) remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide, with current treatments focused primarily on reducing low-density lipoprotein levels while failing to repair damaged endothelial cells, thus highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic drugs. To address this challenge, we analyzed human AS patient single-cell RNA sequencing datasets to identify disease-driving genes and then employed connectivity map analysis to screen for potential therapeutic compounds. Using network pharmacology and machine learning to predict core drug targets, the stud

Structural vaccinology expedites rational design of next-generation vaccines for influenza and respiratory syncytial virus.

Vaccination stands as the single most effective and cost-efficient public health intervention in human history, serving as a cornerstone of modern medicine that profoundly transforms global health outcomes. Beyond preventing disease, it acts as a catalyst for equitable socioeconomic development. In recent decades, recurrent seasonal viral outbreaks and sporadic yet catastrophic pandemics have continued to pose challenges to global public health systems. Traditional vaccine technologies, however, not only often fall short in protection efficacy, but also fail to keep pace with the evolving dema

Implant placement accuracy using computer-guided surgical templates supported by bone and mucosa: an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study evaluated the accuracy of virtual planning for single implant placement in the regions of teeth 33 and 43, comparing bone-supported and mucosa-supported guides. A secondary analysis assessed differences related to insertion method, since implant placement in the 43 region used a manual ratchet and in the 33 region used a motorized handpiece. METHODOLOGY: In total, 32 implants were placed in 16 edentulous artificial mandibles (8 using bone-supported guides and 8 using mucosa-supported guides), with two implants per mandible. Implant positions were assessed using

metadeconfoundR: Covariate analysis of high-dimensional cross-sectional omics data.

MOTIVATION: Identifying disease biomarkers from large molecular datasets is complicated by correlated and confounded signals like comorbidities and treatment regimens, batch effects, and cohort biases. These effects bias statistical inference and clinical conclusions. Robust methodologies are fundamental for reliable biomarker discovery. RESULTS: metadeconfoundR is an R package for conservative biomarker discovery in (multi-)omics case-control datasets. It has a scalable two-step confounder-aware statistical framework for retaining only associations with independent support. It identifies cov

Emerging challenges of Cedecea lapagei infection: a rare case of pneumonia with bacteremia and literature review.

Cedecea lapagei is a rare opportunistic pathogen that can colonize environmental surfaces and form biofilms. Despite its unclear clinical relevance, it has been linked to bacteremia, pneumonia, urinary tract, and wound infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Herein, we describe a rare case of C. lapagei bacteremia characterized by markedly limited therapeutic options and contextualize it within the existing literature. A 35-year-old woman with epilepsy presented with fever, dyspnea and worsening general condition. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) showed left-lung pneumonic

Accurate prediction of asparagine deamidation in biologics using advanced machine learning models.

The spontaneous deamidation of asparagine residues remains a major obstacle to the stability and efficacy of protein therapeutics. Currently available models in the literature for predicting deamidation liabilities can suffer from limited generalizability, likely due to biases such as sequence similarity within datasets. In this study, we built machine learning models using protein language models (PLMs, e.g. ESM2) and graph neural networks (GNNs), trained on a comprehensive dataset of 591 asparagine sites from over 105 protein molecules. To address the critical issue of data leakage, we imple

Cinematic Rendering of 3D Early and Late Gadolinium Enhancement Cardiac MRI: A Feasibility Demonstration.

Cinematic rendering (CR) is a physically based three-dimensional visualization technique that uses Monte Carlo path tracing with global illumination to generate photorealistic images from volumetric medical imaging data. Although CR has been extensively applied to cardiovascular computed tomography, its application to cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), particularly to gadolinium-enhanced datasets, has been only rarely described. This report demonstrates the feasibility of applying CR to three-dimensional early and late gadolinium enhancement (EGE/LGE) CMR acquired in a single adult pati

Calcium Dynamics in Astrocyte-Neuron Communication from Intracellular to Extracellular Signaling.

Astrocytic calcium signaling is a central mechanism of neuron-glia communication that operates across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Traditionally, research has focused on intracellular Ca2+ oscillations that regulate gliotransmitter release, ion homeostasis, and metabolic support. Recent evidence, however, reveals that extracellular calcium ([Ca2+]o) is not a passive reservoir but a dynamic signaling mediator capable of influencing neuronal excitability within milliseconds. Through mechanisms such as calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) activation, ion channel modulation, surface charge eff

The mysterious middlemen making your vision pop: understanding the function of amacrine cells.

In many brain regions, inhibitory interneurons represent a highly diverse class of cells, and the specific roles of most subtypes remain unclear. This diversity is particularly striking in the retina, where amacrine cells, the primary inhibitory interneurons, form the most diverse population, with nearly 67 subtypes in mice. Recent methodological advances have provided unprecedented insight into this complexity. Techniques such as transcriptomics, connectomics and targeted electrophysiological recordings have made it possible to isolate and characterize individual amacrine cell types. Here, we

Optimised Hybrid Attention-Based Capsule Network Integrated Three-Pathway Network for Chronic Disease Detection in Retinal Images.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, researchers have concentrated on generating retinal images as a means of detecting and classifying chronic diseases. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to avoid chronic diseases. Manually grading retinal images is time-consuming, prone to errors, and lacks patient-friendliness. Various Deep Learning (DL) algorithms are employed to detect chronic diseases from retinal fundus images. Also, these methods have some disadvantages, such as overfitting, computational cost, and so on. OBJECTIVE: The proposed research aims to develop Optimized DL based syst
