Cultures for Malassezia yeasts were taken from both normal-looking skin and lesional skin in 124 patients with atopic dermatitis, 16 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis and from normal skin of 31 healthy controls. Positive Malassezia growth was found in fewer patients with atopic dermatitis (56%) than in patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis (88%) or in healthy controls (84%, p<0.01). In the patients with atopic dermatitis, fewer positive cultures were found in lesional (28%) than in non-lesional skin (44%, p<0.05), while positive cultures were found in 75% of both lesional and non-lesional sk

A number of factors have to be taken into account when dealing with the treatment of skin diseases with topical corticosteroids, including disease type and phase, potency of the drug, safety, site to be treated, age of the patient, and drug formulation. Concerning the specific indications for topical corticosteroid treatment, we can distinguish skin diseases in which: (a) topical corticosteroids are the treatment of choice; (b) topical corticosteroids are useful as alternative and/or adjuvant treatment; (c) the proposed use of topical corticosteroids has to be confirmed as useful; and (d) topi

Face and neck dermatitis in the atopic dermatitis patient is a diagnostically challenging entity with broad differential diagnoses. Recent case reports reporting face and neck dermatitis in patients on dupilumab therapy have added further complexity to diagnosis and management. Herein, we discuss a broad diagnostic algorithm and practical management strategy for recalcitrant face and neck dermatitis in the atopic patient with an emphasis on face and neck dermatitis associated with dupilumab therapy. Our aim is to raise awareness about the probable entity of drug-associated face and neck dermat

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory skin diseases typically exhibit autonomic imbalance characterized by sympathetic dominance and parasympathetic hypofunction. The vagus nerve plays a fundamental role in modulating inflammatory responses through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, a neural circuit in which vagal efferent signals lead to acetylcholine release that suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA).
SUMMARY: This review analyzes emerging evidence supporting vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) as a therapeutic approach for inflammatory skin dis

Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition and the mildest form of seborrheic dermatitis, associated with microbial dysbiosis primarily involving Malassezia furfur and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Conventional anti-dandruff treatments are often limited by recurrence and reliance on synthetic antifungal agents. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a synergistic, oil-based herbal formulation with antimicrobial activity against dandruff-causing microorganisms. The herbal constituent, Eucalyptus citriodora (EC) oil, individually signifies its efficacy against key dandruff-causing microbes, while Cen

The histopathologic distinction between benign and malignant cutaneous keratinocytic proliferations can pose a difficult diagnostic challenge - often with important clinical implications. Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) has emerged as a potential biomarker which may aid in the segregation of these lesions, and we hypothesize that ATF3 expression may be a specific marker of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Using immunohistochemistry, we characterized ATF3 expression in a series of 126 cutaneous epithelial proliferations, including SCC (n = 27), basal cell carcinomas (BCC, n = 5

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Plants produce essential oils in response to physiological stresses, pathogen attacks and ecological factors. Nowadays, they are recognized as defence compounds and attractors of pollinators. Essential oils have been traditionally used in the past years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. In recent times due to their well-documented antimicrobial activities, essential oils have consolidated their use in raw and processed food preservation, health and clinical uses.
AIMS OF THE REVIEW: The potential activity of essential oils against the large

Quantitative cultures were obtained using contact plates to determine whether the quantity and composition of Malassezia species at a given anatomic site in normal individuals differs from that of patients with various cutaneous dermatoses. The sample included 20 clinically healthy individuals (without any dermatosis) and 110 patients with dermatoses (including 31 with atopic dermatitis [AD], 28 with psoriasis [PS], 28 with seborrheic dermatitis [SD] and 23 with pityriasis versicolor [PV]). Contact plates filled with special culture medium were used to obtain a quantitative culture from five b

We report on 161 patients suffering from inflammatory dermatoses on hands, forearms, and lower legs who had been initially treated with 0.1% difluocortolone valerate. During the maintenance therapy carried out over a period of 3 to 4 weeks, we tested the efficacy of Kamillosan cream vs. 0.25% hydrocortisone, 0.75% fluocortin butyl ester, and 5% bufexamac in a bilateral comparative study. For the indications tested Kamillosan cream showed more or less equieffective therapeutic results as compared to 0.25% hydrocortisone. It is superior, however, to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent 5% b
