Clinical isolates of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Candida albicans and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) were tested against copper (Cu) and its alloys. Stainless steel and polyvinylchloride (PVC) were used as controls. The amount of Cu required to inhibit test isolates at room temperature (24 degrees C) and at 4 degrees C was determined. At room temperature, Cu, DZR Brass (Cu 62%, Pb 2.5%, arsenate 0.13% and Zn 22.5%) and Brass 70/30 (Cu 70% and zinc 30%) inhibited C. albicans and K. pneumoniae at 60

BACKGROUND: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy has been reported as a risk factor for the transmission of Helicobacter pylori. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of transmission of H. pylori infection by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in patients who had previously had such procedures in a low disinfection level environment.
METHODS: The study included 1082 patients. Patients that had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or were treated with antibiotics 15 days before the index endoscopy were excluded. H. pylori infection was diagnosed by ultra-rapid urease test. Vari

The influence of the residual application of postoperative wound suction drainage devices on wound healing was examined in 150 patients with total hip replacement. The duration of continuous wound-draining as well as their bacterial contamination were analysed and the possible correlation was evaluated. Another aim of the study was to observe if the bacteriologic result is a proper method to obtain evidence about the wound situation. The 150 patients were divided in 3 groups. Two groups (of 50 patients each) had total hip replacement at the same time period. One group had postoperative wound c

OBJECTIVE: To describe Enterococcus faecalis colonisation and endocarditis in 5 intensive care patients after treatment with selective decontamination (SDD).
SETTING: Intensive care unit (ICU) in a general hospital.
PATIENTS: The patients were admitted to the ICU because of adult respiratory distress syndrome, polytrauma (2 patients), abdominal aortic surgery and gastrointestinal surgery. Because these patients needed mechanical ventilation they received systemic cefotaxime and SDD (polymyxin E, amphotericin B and norfloxacin).
RESULTS: Colonisation with E. faecalis was documented in all pa

The contamination of dental curing light tips was evaluated before and after treatment and after their use and disinfection. The influence of a plastic protective barrier over the flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity of resin composites were also analyzed. Microbiological sampling was conducted at initial contamination (T0), in Log 10 CFU/4 mL; after dental treatment (T1); and after disinfection with 70% ethanol (v/v) (T2). The results were analyzed by descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. The flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity analyses were performed using b

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections occur in patients under medical care, which is a major public health issue in hospitals worldwide. The prevalence is two to three folds higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. Inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals such as gowns, mobile phones, and stethoscopes are highly prone to bacterial contamination from the healthcare setting. In Ethiopia, there is a paucity of published data on the bacterial profile and susceptibility patterns of an isolates.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the bacterial profile and antimicrobial

Human coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, are known to spread mainly via close contact and respiratory droplets. However, other potential means of transmission may be present. Fomite-mediated transmission occurs when viruses are deposited onto a surface and then transfer to a subsequent individual. Surfaces can become contaminated directly from respiratory droplets or from a contaminated hand. Due to mask mandates in many countries around the world, the former is less likely. Hands can become contaminated if respiratory droplets are deposited on them (i.e., coughing or sneezing) or through co

BACKGROUND: International and national travelling has made the rapid spread of infectious diseases possible. Little information is available on the role of major traffic hubs, such as airports, in the transmission of respiratory infections, including seasonal influenza and a pandemic threat. We investigated the presence of respiratory viruses in the passenger environment of a major airport in order to identify risk points and guide measures to minimize transmission.
METHODS: Surface and air samples were collected weekly at three different time points during the peak period of seasonal influen

Surgical site infection (SSI) after spine instrumentation is difficult to treat, and often requires removal of instrumentation. The removal of instrumentation after spine surgery is a severe complication that can lead to the deterioration of activities of daily living and poor prognosis. Although there are many reports on SSI after spine surgery, few reports have investigated the risk factors for the removal of instrumentation after spine surgery SSI. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for unavoidable removal of instrumentation after SSI of spine surgery. We retrospectively reviewed

Recurrence after curative resection for gastric cancer is high, the pattern of recurrence include haematogenous metastasis, peritoneal metastasis, lymph node metastasis, and local recurrence, respectively. Here we report a case with local recurrence at the beginning, and subsequent metastasis to the esophagus three month following gastroscopy. Biopsy of the nodule in the upper esophagus was taken, pathology showed the adenocarcinoma of gastric origin. CT scanning showed no thickening of upper esophagus wall, suggesting there may not be intramural metastasis. The patient had proven gastroesopha

PURPOSE: Urinary tract infections are the most common hospital acquired infections in humans, caused primarily by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Indwelling urinary catheters for bladder drainage in humans become encrusted with uropathogenic E. coli biofilms that are resistant to common antibiotics, resulting in chronic infections. We studied the efficacy of the cinnamon ingredient trans-cinnamaldehyde (Sigma) for preventing uropathogenic E. coli biofilm. We also determined the efficacy of trans-cinnamaldehyde as an ingredient in catheter lock solution to inactivate preformed uropathogenic E.

The diversity of free-living protozoa in five meat-cutting plants was determined. Light microscopy after enrichment culturing was combined with sequencing of PCR-amplified, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)-separated 18S rRNA gene fragments, which was used as a fast screening method. The general results of the survey showed that a protozoan community of amoebae, ciliates, and flagellates was present in all of the plants. Protozoa were detected mainly in floor drains, in standing water on the floor, on soiled bars of cutting tables, on plastic pallets, and in out-of-use hot water k

BACKGROUND: An ideal computer keyboard for clinical use would be easily cleanable and cleaned by staff, meet acceptable levels of usability, and not attract hospital bacteria.
METHODS: In vitro studies were performed to demonstrate bacterial transfer between keyboard surfaces and gloves. This was followed by a usability study and a controlled trial of keyboard contamination in an intensive care unit both with and without an alarm to indicate the need for cleaning. Eight cleanable keyboards were placed at random beds and compared with standard keyboards.
RESULTS: Bacteria were most easily rem

EPIDEMIOLOGY: Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CR-BSIs) occur in 1.3% to 26.2% of patients with central venous catheters used to administer parenteral nutrition (PN). Because of their nutritional components, PN solutions can support microbial growth. Contamination during preparation and handling is rare in hospitals and home-infusion pharmacies but may be difficult to control in a home setting. The risk of infection is increased in hospitalized patients because of malnutrition-associated immunosuppression, hyperglycemia exacerbated by dextrose infusion, microbial colonization/contamina
