PURPOSES: The etiological connection between types of primary glaucoma and the risk of retinal vascular occlusions remains elusive. We conducted a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian Randomization (MR) study with mediation analysis to elucidate causal genetic relationships and investigate potential mediating pathways.
METHODS: Genetic instruments of primary glaucomas and retinal vascular occlusions were derived from the UK Biobank and the Finngen, respectively. A two-sample MR and reverse MR were conducted to elucidate directional and causal relationships. Ocular and systemic risk factors, inc

To describe an unusual case of retinoblastoma in adult Saudi. A 21-year-old Saudi male developed acute unilateral visual loss due to a large intraocular lesion in his left eye. Within five days of presentation, the tumor enlarged rapidly causing angle closure glaucoma and orbital cellulitis like picture. The patient underwent enucleation and the histopathology specimen confirmed the presence of an undifferentiated type tumor cell that was consistent with retinoblastoma with choroidal and optic nerve invasion. Retinoblastoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an intraocular m

The Brown-McLean syndrome is defined by corneal edema that involves the peripheral 2.0 to 3.0 mm of cornea, sparing the central cornea. This syndrome is usually associated with previous cataract surgery but has been reported rarely in patients with other predisposing factors such as angle-closure glaucoma or spontaneous lens absorption with iridodonesis. We describe the clinical course of a 50-year-old man with myotonic dystrophy who had Brown-McLean syndrome with no identifiable predisposition for peripheral corneal edema. Although this syndrome appears to be the result of peripheral endothel

Glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) have been used in the management of complicated glaucomas. GDDs are associated with various complications such as tube migration, tube or plate exposure or extrusion, ocular motility disturbance and infection. Erosion of conjunctiva and exposure of the GDD remains a risk factor for the development of endophthalmitis. A wide range of materials have been used for this purpose, including sclera, dura, pericardium, fascia lata and cornea. However, there is no evidence to prove that any of these methods is superior to another for providing tectonic durability in the

Proton beam irradiation resulted in clinical and/or histopathological regression of large ciliary body and choroidal melanomas in three eyes. Enucleations were performed 6 1/2 weeks, five months, and 11 months after irradiation for angle-closure glaucoma from total retinal detachment, increase in retinal detachment, and neovascular glaucoma, respectively. A direct relationship was found between the length of the interval from irradiation to enucleation and the degree of histologic changes. Vascular changes in the tumors included endothelial cell swelling and decreased lumen size, basement memb

AIM: The aim was to identify the presenting symptoms and social risk factors for late presentation of primary glaucoma in newly diagnosed cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a case-control study in a tertiary eye care center in Maharashtra, India. Newly diagnosed patients with primary glaucoma were classified as cases (late presenters) where there was no perception of light in one eye or severe visual field loss affecting an area within 20° of fixation or a cup-disc (C:D) ratio ≥0.8 and controls (early presenters), presenting relative scotoma within 20° of fixation or a C:D ratio <0.8, but >

PURPOSE: To describe a case of acute-onset bilateral angle-closure glaucoma secondary to ciliochoroidal effusions in a 43-year-old otherwise healthy female. An autoimmune and inflammatory work-up was negative, and the patient was not on any medications or supplements. She had been using a red-light therapy (RLT) mask over the past two weeks, including the morning of her presentation.
OBSERVATIONS: The underlying mechanism of the patient's presentation was most consistent with secondary angle-closure due to ciliochoroidal effusions and anterior rotation of the ciliary body. The only recent lif

Iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndrome is a rare acquired anterior segment disorder characterized by abnormal proliferation and migration of corneal endothelial cells, leading to progressive angle closure, iris abnormalities, secondary glaucoma, and corneal decompensation. Historically divided into Chandler syndrome, progressive iris atrophy, and Cogan-Reese syndrome, ICE is now recognized as a disease spectrum with a shared pathophysiologic basis. Diagnosis and management remain challenging because of variable clinical manifestations and progressive vision-threatening complications. We provi

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the second most common cause of permanent optic nerve-related visual loss in adults after glaucoma. NAION is caused by complex mechanisms that lead to optic nerve head hypoperfusion and is frequently associated with cardiovascular risk factors like type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and hypertension. An attack of acute angle-closure (AAC) occurs when the trabecular meshwork is blocked with peripheral iris that causes an abrupt rise in intraocular pressure, which can trigger a decrease in optic nerve head perfusion. We present a case with

The success of filtering surgery for glaucoma may be compromised by a postoperative flat anterior chamber associated with cornea-lens touch, hypotony, and absence of wound leakage. The clinical course of eight patients with this complication was reviewed. Six patients had chronic angle-closure glaucoma. Only one patient responded to medical therapy which included frequent topical application of atropine sulfate 3.0% for 1 hour. Reformation of the anterior chamber with air and drainage of any suprachoroidal fluid was immediately performed in the remaining seven. At the time of follow-up (mean,

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of mitomycin C (MMC) and triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) during and after glaucoma filtering surgery.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional consecutive case series. All eyes underwent primary guarded trabeculectomy with either MMC or sub-Tenon TAC injection. Intraoperative and postoperative complications up to 5 years after the filtering surgery were evaluated. Differences between the two regimens were tested for statistical significance.
RESULTS: A total of 64 trabeculectomies, of which 39 with MMC and 25 with TAC, were compared.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) catalyze the synthesis of HCO3- from H2O and CO2. The dysfunction of CAs leads to aqueous humor secretion and high intraocular pressure to cause glaucoma pathogenesis. Methazolamide (MTZ), a CA inhibitor, can effectively treat glaucoma by reducing aqueous humor secretion. We previously reported that carbonic anhydrase I (CA1), a CA family member, was highly expressed in atherosclerotic tissues of the aorta and stimulated atherosclerosis (AS) by promoting calcification. MTZ showed therapeutic and preventive effects on AS in a mouse model. The above findings suggest a r

OBJECTIVE: Topical latanoprost 0.005% is commonly used in dogs with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG), and marked miosis has been reported in the literature. To further explore the effect of topical latanoprost on anterior segment anatomy, we performed iridocorneal angle biometrics in normal beagle dogs.
METHODS: Thirty-five normal female beagle dogs were assessed using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). One eye of each dog was scanned with the AS-OCT in the superotemporal quadrant. One drop of latanoprost 0.005% was applied topically, and the OCT scan was repeated 30
