A total of 1010 stool samples collected from the primary school-going children between the age group of 5 to 10 years from September 1998 to October 2000, were studied to find out the prevalence of intestinal helminths in this paediatric age group and in the urban and rural areas of Manipur. In nine organic swine herds, faecal excretion and pasture contamination by parasite eggs/larvae were studied in a period from March to October 1999. The effects of trickle infections of water buffaloes with Fasciola hepatica (60 metacercariae daily during a period of 20 days) on the blood plasma levels of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE2), 6-keto-prostaglandin F(1alpha) (6-keto-PG F(1alpha)) and thromboxane B(2) (TXB2) were assessed. F. hepatica specific IgG and T- and B-lymphocyte ratios were evaluated as indicators of the immune response. During the 1994 crisis in Rwanda, a high incidence of full-thickness rectal prolapse was noted among the refugee children in the south-west of the country. The prolapses arose as a result of acute diarrhoeal illness superimposed on malnutrition and worm infestation. Eight gastro-intestinal tracts of Cercopithecus mitis labiatus from Karkloof, Natal, and 121 fecal samples from C. m. erythrarchus from Cape Vidal, Natal, were examined for helminth parasites and/or their eggs. A parasitological survey of refugees based in Juba, Sudan, involving 241 faecal samples, revealed that 66% of the population harboured intestinal helminths. The most commonly found infection was hookworm (36%), followed by Schistosoma mansoni (26%), Strongyloides stercoralis (20%), Hymenolepis nana (11%), Ascaris lumbricoides (1.2%), Trichuris trichiura (0.8%) and Taenia sp. Sixty-nine per cent of a group of children with chronic mucoid diarrhoea who would not normally be seen in a tertiary health care facility had endoscopically demonstrable abnormality in the distal bowel, especially in the distal rectum. Sigmoidoscopy and punch biopsy of the rectum are safe procedures which can be undertaken in primary health care facilities. The inclusion of such investigations will facilitate the elucidation of the aetiology of chronic mucoid diarrhoea.

A survey was carried out in three orphanages in Jakarta for intestinal helminthic infections. Stool samples and anal swabs of 158 children were examined. The prevalences of intestinal helminthic infections in the Putra Utama, Muslimin and Van der Steur orphanages were respectively as follows: a lumbricoides 70.0%, 76.6% and 50.8%, T. trichiura 78.0% 93.6% and 70.5%, hookworm 20.0%, 12.7% and 3.2% and E. vermicularis 34.0% 29.8%, 59.0%. The dominant intestinal helminths in the Iranian villages of Kargar Malleh (hookworms), Bandar Abbas (hookworms) and Jazin (Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura), were recorded with their frequency distributions, in 80, 40 and 111 villagers, respectively in 1977-78.
