BACKGROUND: The precise identification of nematodes which cause diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) has been unsuccessful. Shape and size are useful in the initial stages of identification, but histopathologic examination usually is necessary for accurate classification. Intact nematodes recovered from patients with DUSN have been mentioned scarcely in the literature. The authors report the first case of DUSN in which a viable nematode was removed successfully via a transvitreal surgical approach and recovered for parasitologic study.

BACKGROUND: The presence of vessels has a negative influence on corneal transplant survival. Closure of such vessels prior to transplantation may improve the transplant results, and this might be achieved by irradiating the vessels with argon laser light after intravenous administration of a photosensitizer, e.g. bacteriochlorin a (BCA). In this report we describe, herewith, a patient with primary pigmentary dystrophy of the retina (retinitis pigmentosa) associated with unilateral retinal arteriovenous communication and exudative retinal detachment. The patient had complete resolution of the retinal detachment following laser photocoagulation treatment. Such association has not been previously reported.

DESIGN: Retrospective review of the medical records of all patients undergoing laser bronchoscopy.

Combined rhegmatogenous and traction retinal detachments associated with branch vein occlusions occurred in five eyes of five patients between Jan. 1, 1986 and Dec. 31, 1987. Four patients underwent surgery with pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal gas, with or without scleral buckling. One patient refused treatment. All operated on eyes had attached retinas at a mean follow-up of seven months. Because posterior traction plays an important role in these unusual detachments, consideration should be given to pars plana vitrectomy and air-fluid exchange rather than scleral buckling alone.

Besides surgical intervention, there are virtually no palliative treatment modalities available for bleeding and/or obstructing colorectal malignancy. The usefulness and safety of laser photocoagulation was prospectively investigated in 63 patients with colorectal cancer.
