Discectomy for Lumbar Disc Herniation in Pediatric and Adolescent Populations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Corroborative evidence for discectomy in pediatric or adolescent patients remains scarce, with this single-arm meta-analysis investigating discectomy for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) within this population. PubMed, Embase (Elsevier), CiNAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Eligible studies reported pediatric patients under 21 years of age with a diagnosis of LDH that was treated surgically with discectomy. This review was registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42023463358). Twenty-two studies met the eligibility criteria (n=1182). Visual analog scale (VAS) scores for back p

Cat and dog feces as reservoirs of diverse novel antibiotic resistance genes.

Companion animals have the potential to greatly enhance the physical and mental health of humans, thus leading to an increased focus on the interactions between humans and pets. Currently, the inappropriate and excessive utilization of antimicrobial agents has become prevalent in veterinary clinical practice for pets. This antibiotic contamination phenomenon has a profound impact on the enrichment of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in pets. However, the pet-associated resistome, especially the novel ARGs in pets, represents a relatively neglected are

Efficacy and safety of endothelin receptor antagonists, phosphodiesterase type 5 Inhibitors, and prostaglandins in pediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension: A network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a fatal disease characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling and increased pulmonary artery pressure, leading to impaired lung oxygenation, right heart failure, and even death. Although great advances have been made in PAH-targeted medications for pediatric patients, the efficacy and safety of these treatments are controversial. METHODS: We retrieved relevant articles from electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until 12 April 2022. To compare the effectiveness and safety of endothelin receptor

Comparison of meta-analytical estimates of outcomes after Alfieri or neochordal repair in isolated anterior mitral prolapse.

OBJECTIVES: Repair of the isolated degenerative anterior mitral leaflet has been considered more challenging and associated with compromised durability compared with isolated posterior leaflet in major series. Implantation of neochordae or Alfieri edge-to-edge is the most employed repair technique for isolated anterior repair currently, but little data exist comparing their relative durability. We sought to investigate this issue with this meta-analysis. METHODS: A literature search was performed (Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase and The Cochrane Library). The primary outcome was the incidence rate

Essential gene knockdowns reveal genetic vulnerabilities and antibiotic sensitivities in Acinetobacter baumannii.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria underscores the need to define genetic vulnerabilities that can be therapeutically exploited. The Gram-negative pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii, is considered an urgent threat due to its propensity to evade antibiotic treatments. Essential cellular processes are the target of existing antibiotics and a likely source of new vulnerabilities. Although A. baumannii essential genes have been identified by transposon sequencing, they have not been prioritized by sensitivity to knockdown or antibiotics. Here, we take a systems biology appr

Meta‑analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing intracorporeal versus extracorporeal anastomosis in minimally invasive right hemicolectomy: upgrading the level of evidence.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive right hemicolectomy has been increasingly used for the treatment of right hemicolectomy disease, and both intracorporeal anastomosis (ICA) and extracorporeal anastomosis (ECA) are available to restore intestinal continuity. However, the advantages and disadvantages of these two anastomoses are highly controversial. The present meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of ICA versus ECA in minimally invasive right colectomy to improve the grade of evidence. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for randomized cont

Late myocardial reperfusion in ST-elevation myocardial infarction: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is the most severe clinical form of acute myocardial infarction, for which the current treatment consists of effective and timely myocardial reperfusion (within 12 hours of symptom onset). However, between 10% and 15% of patients with STEMI arrive at hospital facilities 12 hours after the onset of symptoms (late presentation). Therefore, the objective of the present study will be to determine if late revascularisation (12-72 hours after the onset of symptoms) affects the indicators of cardiovascular mortality, reinfarction, recur

Droperidol as a potential inhibitor of acyl-homoserine lactone synthase from A. baumannii: insights from virtual screening, MD simulations and MM/PBSA calculations.

Acinetobacter baumannii belongs to the ESKAPE family of pathogens and is a multi-drug resistant, gram-negative bacteria which follows the anaerobic form of respiration. A. baumannii is known to be the causative agent of hospital-related infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, septicaemia and a plethora of infections such as urinary tract infections found primarily in immunocompromised patients. These attributes of A. baumannii make it a priority pathogen against which potential therapeutic agents need to be developed. A. baumannii employs the formation of a biofilm to insulate
