Asymptomatic intraspinal epidermoid cyst in a 7-year-old male with juvenile idiopathic arthritis identified by an advanced physiotherapist practitioner: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric intraspinal epidermoid cysts are rare with potential to cause life-altering outcomes if not addressed. Reports to date describe symptomatic presentations including loss of bladder or bowel function and motor and sensory losses. This case report identifies the diagnostic challenge of an asymptomatic intraspinal epidermoid cyst in the cauda equina region presenting in a 7-year-old male with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). DIAGNOSIS: An advanced physiotherapist practitioner assessed and diagnosed a previously healthy 7-year-old-male of South Asian descent with JIA base

Congenital Proximal Radioulnar Synostosis in an Elite Athlete-Case Report.

Background and Objectives: Proximal radioulnar synostosis (PRUS) is the most frequent congenital forearm disorder, although the prevalence in the general population is rare with a few hundred cases reported. Pfeiffer, Poland, Holt-Oram, and other serious congenital syndromes contain this abnormality. Non-syndromic cases with isolated PRUS very often exhibit as SMAD6, NOG genes variants, or sex chromosome aneuploidy. A subgroup of patients with haematological abnormalities presents with HOXA11 or MECOM genes variants. Case report: We present a non-syndromic adult elite ice-hockey player with un

Omphalocele and gastroschisis and associated malformations.

The etiology of gastroschisis and omphalocele is unclear and their pathogenesis is controversial. Because previous reports have inconsistently noted the type and frequency of malformations associated with omphalocele and gastroschisis, we assessed these associated malformations ascertained between 1979 and 2003 in 334,262 consecutive births. Of the 86 patients with omphalocele, 64 (74.4%) had associated malformations. These included patients with chromosomal abnormalities (25, 29.0%); non-chromosomal syndromes including Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Goltz syndrome, Marshall-Smith syndrome, Meck

Skeletal morbidity in children receiving chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and its association with mineral homeostasis and duration of inpatient stay.

BACKGROUND: Reduced activity, older age, and abnormal bone mineral status are considered as important determinants of poor bone health in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The independent contribution of these factors toward skeletal morbidity (SM) requires further investigation. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of activity, age, and mineral status over the first 12 months of chemotherapy on subsequent SM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 56 children presenting with ALL between 2003 and 2007 and treated on UKALL2003 were reviewed for the

Application of musculoskeletal ultrasound in endemic skeletal fluorosis: a comparative study of water-borne and brick-tea-borne subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Endemic skeletal fluorosis is a chronic disorder caused by prolonged excessive fluoride intake and is characterized by skeletal hyperostosis, periarticular soft-tissue degeneration, and joint dysfunction. Digital radiography (DR) is the conventional diagnostic modality, but it has limited sensitivity for early soft-tissue changes and provides little dynamic information. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) may address these limitations, yet comparative evidence across major fluorosis subtypes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To characterize MSKUS findings in endemic skeletal fluorosis an

Nuclear medicine imaging of bone infections.

Osteomyelitis is a broad group of infectious diseases that involve the bone and/or bone marrow. It can arise haematogenously, via extension from a contiguous infection, or by direct inoculation during surgery or trauma. The diagnosis is not always obvious and imaging tests are frequently performed as part of the diagnostic work-up. Commonly performed radionuclide tests include technetium-99m ((99m)Tc)-diphosphonate bone scintigraphy (bone), and gallium-67 ((67)Ga) and in vitro labelled leukocyte (white blood cell; WBC) imaging. Although they are useful, each of these tests has limitations. Bon

Cross-cultural validation of simplified Chinese version of spine functional index.

BACKGROUND: No effective constructs were available in mainland China to assess the whole spine function. The SFI was developed to evaluate spinal function based on the concept of a single kinetic chain concept for whole spine. The SFI has been translated to Spanish and Turkish with accepted psychometric properties. It is imperative to introduce the SFI in mainland China and further to explore the measurement properties. METHODS: The English versions of the SFI was cross-culturally translated according to international guidelines. Measurement properties (content validity, construct validity an

Perioperative Anesthetic Considerations for Temporal Bone Tumor Resection in Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23)-Related Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: A Case Report.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are uncommon, predominantly benign neoplasms frequently associated with dysregulated phosphate metabolism through the overproduction of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Elevated levels of FGF23 lead to phosphate depletion, which may impair tissue oxygen delivery, central respiratory drive, and respiratory muscle function. Systemic manifestations may include osteomalacia and neuromuscular dysfunction, with an increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular complications. PMTs often present with nonspecific clinical findings and may remain unrecognized

Phenotypic description of a large French series of individuals with Potocki-Lupski syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS) is a rare genetic disorder, with an estimated prevalence of 1:25 000. Detection of a duplication at position 17p11.2 comprising the RAI1 gene establishes the diagnosis. Deletion of this same region is responsible for Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS). Hitherto, the non-specific clinical features included psychomotor and growth retardation and multiple congenital anomalies. Our aim was to further delineate the clinical spectrum of PLTS. METHODS: We gathered a series of 56 individuals carrying a 17p11.2 duplication, one of the largest reported to date. We c

Management of Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Therapy in the Context of Ultrasound-Guided Invasive Procedures.

The growing use of antiplatelet (APT) and anticoagulant therapies (ACT) in an aging population has created increasing challenges when patients require invasive procedures, including those performed under ultrasound (US) guidance. Interrupting these agents may reduce bleeding risk but exposes patients to thromboembolic complications, while continuing therapy may be safe for many low-risk procedures. Current clinical practice remains highly variable and often inconsistent with emerging evidence. This narrative review aims to synthesize contemporary data, guideline recommendations, and real-world

Ultrasonographic detection of joint lesions in canine leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum.

Canine leishmaniasis (CanL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is a multisystemic disease with substantial musculoskeletal involvement. We aimed to assess the usefulness of USG in diagnosing joint abnormalities in dogs with CanL using a clinical approach. Forty-three L. infantum PCR-positive dogs underwent comparative orthopedic physical examination and joint USG; 20 (20/43) also underwent radiography. Tarsal joints were systematically imaged, whereas other joints were imaged if they showed orthopedic clinical signs. Tarsal lesions were detected by joint USG in 86% (37/43) of the dogs, with osteo

Ultrasonography in Canine Carpal Disorders.

Ultrasonographic studies of canine carpal disorders are scarce and typically limited to case reports or evaluations of single structures. This prospective, single-center study characterized ultrasonographic findings in canine carpal disorders confirmed by a composite reference standard and clinical follow-up, and it assessed the diagnostic role of high-frequency musculoskeletal ultrasound in relation to radiography and selectively performed cross-sectional imaging. Forty-eight carpi in 41 dogs were evaluated. This study represents the first ultrasound case series across the spectrum of canine
