Medicinal nicotine in COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome, the new corticosteroid.

The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) refers to the anti-inflammatory effects mediated by the parasympathetic nervous system. Existence of this pathway was first demonstrated when acetylcholinesterase inhibitors showed benefits in animal models of sepsis. CAP functions via the vagus nerve. The systemic anti-inflammatory effects of CAP converges on the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on splenic macrophages, leading to suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and simultaneous stimulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin 10. CAP offers a novel mechanism to miti…

Electrophysiological study of infant and adult rats under acute intoxication with fluoroacetamide.

A study was conducted of acute intoxication of infant and adult Wistar rats with fluoroacetamide (FAA), an inhibitor of oxidative metabolism. FAA was administered orally to adult rats at 1/2 LD(50) and subcutaneously to infant rats at LD(100) or 1/10 LD(50). Electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration and motor activity were registered for 7 days. Clinical analysis of ECG and the heart rate variability (HRV) was carried out to assess the state of the vegetative nervous system. In adult rats, FAA caused marked disturbances in the activity of cardiovascular and respiratory systems, including the develo

Functional cerebral asymmetry in hostility: a dual task approach with fluency and cardiovascular regulation.

The influence of hostility levels on verbal and nonverbal fluency, and the concurrent cerebral regulation of autonomic nervous system functioning was examined in 48 right-handed males, half classified as low-hostile, and half as high-hostile. Recent research has supported inhibitory roles for the anterior right cerebrum in sympathetic regulation, and the anterior left cerebrum in parasympathetic regulation. Two neuropsychological tests purportedly mediated by left and right anterior cerebral systems, respectively, are the Controlled Oral Word Association Test and the Ruff Figural Fluency Test.

Glucose as fuel for HPA axis regulation: A narrative review on energy metabolism, stress reactivity, and early life adversity.

Stress physiology and energy metabolism are inherently linked. While the physiological stress response mobilizes energy, early experimental work by Clemens Kirschbaum and colleagues demonstrated that glucose availability in turn shapes the stress response: Fasting attenuates cortisol reactivity, whereas glucose administration restores or amplifies it. Since then, an active line of research on this topic evolved, yet the role of glucose availability in shaping stress regulation still remains incompletely understood. In this targeted, narrative review, we first synthesize evidence from the last

Artery tertiary lymphoid organs, neuro-immune interaction and their mediators in atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the irreversible remodeling of the arterial wall; severe atherosclerotic lesions may lead to life-threatening consequences such as major ischemic events (i.e., myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture. The severity of the lesions is determined by multiple risk factors that cause systemic and cellular metabolic changes, oxidative damage, cell senescence, and immune activation involving both leukocytes and vascular cells. In advanced stages, macrophage infiltration, alterations of the loa

The nervous system in prostate cancer: A basic science and clinical perspective.

Prostate cancer (PCa) constitutes an important health challenge worldwide. The nervous system, in a complex and multimodal manner, regulates prostate physiology and PCa development and affects the course of the disease. The phenomena of axonogenesis and neurogenesis, first described in PCa, were a breakthrough discovery that changed our understanding of cancer-nerve crosstalk. Different nerve types within the cancer stroma and tumor surroundings create complex interactions between the cancer microenvironment elements based on neurotransmission, affecting the hallmarks of cancer. The most commo

Hepatic dysfunction after spinal cord injury: A vicious cycle of central and peripheral pathology?

The liver is essential for numerous physiological processes, including filtering blood from the intestines, metabolizing fats, proteins, carbohydrates and drugs, and regulating iron storage and release. The liver is also an important immune organ and plays a critical role in response to infection and injury throughout the body. Liver functions are regulated by autonomic parasympathetic innervation from the brainstem and sympathetic innervation from the thoracic spinal cord. Thus, spinal cord injury (SCI) at or above thoracic levels disrupts major regulatory mechanisms for hepatic functions. Wo

[Gastrointestinal dysfunction in idiopathic Parkinson's disease].

Gastrointestinal dysfunction is frequent during all stages of Parkinson's disease. The entire gastrointestinal tract becomes involved and symptoms include sialorrhea, dysphagia (difficulties swallowing), delayed gastric emptying, absorption problems and constipation. These non-motor symptoms can be manifested even prior to the initial Parkinson diagnosis, i.e. during the so-called premotor phase of the disorder and may serve as prodromal markers of the early non-motor disease phase. In addition to causing patients major discomfort and a reduced quality of life, such gastrointestinal complaints

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

Autonomic neuropathy, once considered to be the Cinderella of diabetes complications, has come of age. The autonomic nervous system innervates the entire human body, and is involved in the regulation of every single organ in the body. Thus, perturbations in autonomic function account for everything from abnormalities in pupillary function to gastroparesis, intestinal dysmotility, diabetic diarrhea, genitourinary dysfunction, amongst others. "Know autonomic function and one knows the whole of medicine!" It is now becoming apparent that before the advent of severe pathological damage to the auto

Integrated Electrocardiography-Heart Rate Variability (ECG-HRV) Analysis in Neurologically Symptomatic Individuals Without Cardiac Symptoms: A Data-Driven Retrospective Observational Study of Electrocardiographic-Autonomic Associations.

Background and objective Neurocardiac interaction is bidirectional, with neurological disorders influencing cardiac electrophysiology through the autonomic nervous system (ANS) pathways. Patients may present with central nervous system (CNS) manifestations, autonomic symptoms, or both. Despite the absence of overt cardiac symptoms, subtle autonomic disturbances may precede clinically detectable cardiovascular dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate cardiac electrophysiology using heart rate variability (HRV) and electrocardiography (ECG) data from neurologically symptomatic but cardiac-asymp

Bradycardia is induced by hyperactivity of the vagus nerve and nucleus ambiguus during seizures propagating into the brainstem.

OBJECTIVE: Seizure-induced bradycardia and asystole have been documented by video-EEG monitoring periods in patients with epilepsy. This cardiac dysfunction during or after seizures may contribute to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Abnormal neurocardiac function during seizures could potentially be caused by seizures propagating to the brainstem, passing through the parasympathetic nerve and disrupting cardiac control networks. METHODS: We simultaneously recorded activity from the brain and vagus nerve as well as heart rate and respiration in adult Sprague-Dawley rats under ureth

Heart rate variability and heart rate recovery as prognostic factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Heart rate (HR) can appear static and regular at rest, during exercise or recovery after exercise. However, HR is constantly adjusted due to factors such as breathing, blood pressure control, thermoregulation and the renin-angiotensin system, leading to a more dynamic response that can be quantified using HRV (heart rate variability). HRV is defined as the deviation in time between successive normal heart beat and is a noninvasive method to measure the total variation in a number of HR interval. HRV can serve as measure of autonomic activity of sino-atrial node. The aim of

Reliability of Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS)-31 in Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome.

RATIONALE: Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare disorder characterized by alveolar hypoventilation and variable autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction (ANSD) due to mutations in PHOX2B, a gene crucial for ANS neural crest lineage differentiation. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Our prospective study aims were twofold: to (1) assess the relationships between the subjective Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS)-31 and objective indices of ANSD obtained from heart rate variability analyses, ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring, and CO2 chemosensitivities and (2) de

Lateral Habenula Regulates Cardiovascular Autonomic Responses via the Serotonergic System in Rats.

The lateral habenula (LHb) plays essential roles in behavioral responses to stressful events. Stress is tightly linked to autonomic responses such as cardiovascular responses, yet how the LHb regulates these responses is not well understood. To address this issue, we electrically stimulated the LHb in rats, measured its effects on heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP), and investigated the neural circuits that mediate these LHb-induced cardiovascular responses via the autonomic nervous system. We observed that stimulation of the LHb induced bradycardia and pressor responses, whereas

Effects of exercise training on cardiovascular adrenergic system.

In heart failure (HF), exercise has been shown to modulate cardiac sympathetic hyperactivation which is one of the earliest features of neurohormonal derangement in this syndrome and correlates with adverse outcome. An important molecular alteration related to chronic sympathetic overstimulation in HF is represented by cardiac β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) dysfunction. It has been demonstrated that exercise reverses β-AR dysfunction by restoring cardiac receptor membrane density and G-protein-dependent adenylyl cyclase activation. In particular, several evidence indicate that exercise reduces l

Depth of SCUBA Diving Affects Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System.

The present study investigated the influence of SCUBA dives with compressed air at depths of 10 and 20 m on ECG-derived HRV parameters in apparently healthy individuals. We hypothesized that cardiac sympathetic activity (measured by HRV parameters) adapts proportionally to diving depth, and that both time- and frequency-domain parameters are sensitive enough to track changes in cardiac ANS function during diving activities and subsequently during the recovery period. Eleven healthy middle-aged recreational divers (nine men and two women, age 43 ± 8, all nonsmokers) volunteered to participate i
