BIPE: Artificial Intelligence-Driven Peptide Bitterness Intensity Prediction Engine.

Bitterness, alongside sour, sweet, umami, and salty tastes, constitutes one of the five basic tastes and serves as a key dimension in shaping food flavor profiles. Food protein processing readily generates bitter peptides, whose intense bitterness often leads to consumer rejection, yet these peptides frequently carry beneficial bioactivities, necessitating a trade-off between flavor and functionality. This necessitates the quantitative assessment of bitterness intensity in the early stages of product development. However, experimental assays relying on sensory evaluation and electronic tongue

Assessment of a deep learning model for algal toxin forecasting in coastal Maine.

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) are detected in seafood globally. Resource managers and seafood producers must make decisions in the face of toxic events in order to protect public health and operate businesses. The coast of Maine in the US sees the occurrence of PSTs annually, and fosters a robust shellfish industry composed of both wild harvest and recently increasing aquaculture. Leveraging monitoring data generated from chemical analysis of PST composition in shellfish, we present a method for grouping together consecutive samples to build a machine-learning training set and make short-te

A Multi-Task Learning Framework with Physics Embedded for Signal Reconstruction and State Prediction in Underground Multi-Robot Systems.

Accurate forecasting of the collective state of hydraulic support groups is paramount to ensuring operational safety and optimizing efficiency in longwall coal mining. Existing monitoring methods face four critical bottlenecks. Contact sensors commonly employed for position prediction are highly vulnerable to harsh underground conditions, resulting in unreliable measurements. Vision-based non-contact alternatives are often hindered by labor-intensive manual data annotation requirements. Furthermore, occlusion of underground cameras by coal dust frequently results in missing spatio-temporal dat

Machine learning of clinical and neural data predicts future homicide in high-risk youth.

Homicide is one of the most severe forms of violence and is the single most costly crime in the United States. Despite its high financial cost and incalculable emotional toll, we know very little about predicting who will commit such crimes. Here we followed a large (n = 202) sample of incarcerated youth for 16 years after release from a maximum-security juvenile correctional facility. Official records and clinical interviews indicated n = 35 committed a homicide during this follow-up period. Clinical (psychopathic traits, age of first arrest) and neural variables (gray matter volume of the am

Predictive Modeling of Bacterial Inactivation With Hydrogen Peroxide Over a Cobalt Ferrite Catalyst.

Hydrogen peroxide activated by a cobalt ferrite catalyst generates hydroxyl radicals that effectively inactivate bacteria. A continuous-flow packed-bed reactor containing cobalt ferrite was developed and tested for bacterial disinfection. The inactivation kinetics were highly nonlinear. The classical Weibull model accurately described the initial decline in bacterial counts at low H2O2 concentration (3 mM) but lost accuracy at longer contact times and higher concentrations (6-10 mM). To improve prediction, 10 machine learning algorithms were evaluated. Gradient boosting (GB) and random forest

Prediction and Prognostication of Acute Graft-Versus-Host Disease by MAGIC Biomarkers.

Recent advancements in prophylaxis for acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) have successfully reduced the incidence of severe cases; however, overall survival rates have not significantly improved, and GVHD continues to be a major cause of mortality. The severity of gastrointestinal (GI) damage is especially critical, as it strongly correlates with treatment failure and non-relapse mortality, but clinical symptoms do not reliably predict peak severity in its early stages. Biomarker-based algorithms, such as the Mount Sinai Acute GVHD International Consortium (MAGIC) algorithm, leverage serum
