Self-Injurious Behavior During Treatment of Pediatric Feeding Disorder: An Evaluation of Treatment Outcomes.

Children with pediatric feeding disorder often engage in inappropriate mealtime behavior (e.g., pushing the utensil away) that can interfere … in SIB (i.e., SIB Group and Control Group). There were no statistically significant differences in problem behavior (e.g., inappropriate mealtime behavior) between the SIB Group and Control Group, and all target behaviors significantly improved by discharge. Interestingly, there were statistically significant differences in the types of treatments used between gr …

Editorial: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Stimulant Medication, and Criminality: Commentary and Caution.

Pioneering longitudinal studies of boys with hyperactivity by Satterfield et al.1 indicated that one of the most deleterious outcomes associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is later antisocial behaviors. This risk grows when ADHD is accompanied by severe behavior problems.2 Though most children with ADHD will not go on to engage in criminal behavior, dimensional measures of externalizing behavior problems as well as categorical diagnoses of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder have strong associations with ADHD. Moreover, cross-sectional studies of incarc

[Reliability and validity of the Zurich Questionnaire of Coping with Illness].

The coping behavior of three groups of patients (N = 585) was assessed by a 45-item-questionnaire, a revised version of the Zurich Coping Questionnaire (ZKV) published earlier. The following three coping patterns resulted, established by factor analysis: ZKV-1: Depressive coping (Cronbach-alpha = .86), ZKV-2: Self-encouragement/distraction (.81) and ZKV-3: Problem tackling (.60). Retest-stability for the two scales 1 and 3 was high (r greater than .74, 12-month-interval). Concurrent and prognostic validity was assessed. The results indicate that the ZKV is a useful instrument for coping resear

Children with self-injurious behavior.

Self-injurious behavior is a serious problem that is not uncommon among individuals with mental retardation. Medical and developmental characteristics of 97 children, adolescents, and young adults (age range 11 months to 21 years, 11 months) assessed and treated for self-injurious behavior in a specialized, interdisciplinary inpatient unit between 1980 and 1988 were reviewed. This population differed from those reported in previous studies in that it was of school age and predominantly community based. Severe or profound mental retardation was present in 82.5% of our patients. The causative di

The roles of the American and European governments in the development and persistence of antisocial behavior.

Both the American and European governments play a crucial part in the development and continuation of antisocial behavior. They demonstrate a lack of activities or initiatives that should intervene in or prevent negative conditions that correlate with antisocial behavior such as media violence; poverty; poor neighborhoods; homelessness; unfavourable parental impact and attitude, educational, psychiatric, neurobiological, and physical problems. More research is needed into a) the determinants of antisocial behavior, b) the construction of new and improvement of existing prevention and intervent
