Virtual Reality as a Moderator of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy with the use of psychedelic substances, including psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ketamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), has demonstrated promise in treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, addiction, and treatment-resistant depression. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PP) represents a unique psychopharmacological model that leverages the profound effects of the psychedelic experience. That experience is characterized by strong dependency on two key factors: participant mindset and the therapeutic environment. As such, therape

The Effect of LPS and Ketoprofen on Cytokines, Brain Monoamines, and Social Behavior in Group-Housed Pigs.

Poor health is a risk factor for damaging behaviors, but the mechanisms behind this link are unknown. Injection of pigs with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can be used to model aspects of poor health. Recent studies have shown that LPS-injected pigs perform more tail- and ear-directed behavior compared to saline-injected pigs and suggest that pro-inflammatory cytokines may play a role in these behaviors. The aims of this study were to test the effect of LPS on the social behavior of pigs and the neurotransmitters and modulators in their brains and to test the effect of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammato

Persistent prostaglandin E2 upregulation and hormonal multi-resistance: A hypothesis for long COVID.

An explanation for long COVID (LC) and its many symptoms remains elusive, and no unifying upstream mediator of its pathophysiology has yet been identified. Viral infections, including COVID-19, upregulate Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), - the principal lipid mediator of inflammation. PGE2 has broad paracrine effects, including modulation of autoantibodies, nervous systems, blood pressure, glucose levels, and apoptosis. Upregulated, PGE2 may drive multiple pathological processes through its four receptors: EP1-EP4. Through EP3, PGE2 stimulates characteristic viral sickness symptoms. Both severe and mi

Carbonic anhydrases I and II.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms I (CA I) and II (CA II) are widespread cytosolic proteins in most vertebrates. They are abundant in the red blood cells and many other tissues, being involved in physiological processes such as pH regulation, CO₂/bicarbonate homeostasis, respiration, and secretion of electrolytes rich in acid or bicarbonate in the stomach, kidneys, cerebrospinal fluid, eyes, and bones. The genetics, biochemistry, expression, localization in tissues and organs, kinetic properties, and catalytic mechanisms of these enzymes are well understood at the molecular level. A

Measles and Rubella Immunity Profile of Healthcare Workers in Bulgaria: A Cross-Sectional Study.

UNLABELLED: Healthcare workers (HCWs) and medical providers are regularly exposed to a wide range of infectious diseases in the course of their duties. This occupational risk is significant in the context of highly contagious infections such as measles, which can spread rapidly in healthcare institutions. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of protective anti-measles and anti-rubella IgG antibodies and factors influencing immunity among HCWs across all 28 districts in Bulgaria. METHODS: A total of 1854 individuals, including 540 (29%) doctors and 1314 (71%) medical specialists from

Clinical Dietitians' Perspectives on Nutritional Management in Children's Palliative Care: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Feeding disorders and gastrointestinal problems are among the most prevalent concerns in children who are eligible for palliative care. Many of these children require medical nutrition therapy and benefit from the involvement of healthcare professionals with expertise in nutrition, such as dietitians. Dietitians may help alleviate the practical and emotional burden parents experience when caring for their sick child at home. However, research is limited regarding dietitians' roles and contributions in children's palliative care. AIM: This study explores dietitians' experiences and

Interembodiment among Long Haulers and their carers.

Millions of people around the world experience the lingering disabling health effects of the pandemic, rendering new forms of chronic living … inforced with others but their bodies are, too. We employ a theory of interembodiment to reveal how sick roles become essential elements of everyday life that are emotional, material, social and biological. Our first case study reveals an intergenerational connection between a Long Hauler and her children who are also living with the condition. The second c …

Characteristics of self-motion sensation after major earthquakes: An internet survey.

This study aimed to determine the characteristics and prognosis of new-onset swaying or dizziness, defined as self-motion sensation, following the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake in Japan and identify factors associated with persistent symptoms and disturbance in daily life. A cross-sectional, internet-based survey was conducted 2 months after the earthquake among 1,000 residents of the affected regions. The incidence and characteristics of self-motion sensation, its impact on daily life, and symptom duration were assessed in the survey. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify d

Food Environments and Diet Quality Among Vendors and Consumers in Five Traditional Urban Markets in Kenya.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Traditional food markets are essential in urban food environments in Kenya and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). They provide affordable fresh food, particularly for low-income urban communities, and are vital places of livelihoods and local economic activities. Despite their importance, associations between market-related factors and diet quality for vendors and consumers are underexplored. This study explores these relationships to inform policies aimed at improving diets and nutrition in LMICs. METHODS: Survey data were collected from 1042 vendors and 8

Micro- and macrovascular function in the highest city in the world: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Since vascular responses to hypoxia in both healthy high-altitude natives and chronic mountain sickness (a maladaptive high-altitude pathology characterised by excessive erythrocytosis and the presence of symptoms-CMS) remain unclear, the role of inflammation and oxidative/nitrosative stress on the endothelium-dependent and -independent responses in both the micro- and macrocirculation, in healthy Andeans at different altitudes and in CMS patients, was examined. METHODS: 94 men were included: 18 lowlanders (LL), 38 healthy highlanders permanently living at 3800 m (n = 21-HL-3800)

Effect of dietary macronutrients and immune challenge on gut microbiota, physiology and feeding behaviour in zebra finches.

Macronutrients play a vital role in host immunity and can influence host-pathogen dynamics, potentially through dietary effects on gut microbiota. To increase our understanding of how dietary macronutrients affect physiology and gut microbiota and investigate whether feeding behaviour is influenced by an immune threat, we conducted two experiments. First, we determined whether zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) exhibit shifts in physiology and gut microbiota when fed diets differing in macronutrient ratios. We found the type and amount of diet consumed affected gut microbiota alpha diversity,

Chondroitin sulfate supplementation improves clinical outcomes in a murine model of necrotizing enterocolitis.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) continues to be a devastating disease in preterm neonates and has a paucity of medical management options. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan (GAG) in human breast milk (HM) and has been shown to reduce inflammation. We hypothesized that supplementation with CS in an experimental NEC model would alter microbial diversity, favorably alter the cytokine profile, and (like other sulfur compounds) improve outcomes in experimental NEC via the eNOS pathway. NEC was induced in 5-day-old pups. Six groups were studied (n = 9-15/group): (1)

Putative involvement of sirtuin modulators in LPS-induced sickness behaviour in mice.

NAD+-dependent histone deacetylases (sirtuins 1-7) have been shown to be involved in various pathophysiological conditions including their involvement in cardiovascular, cancerous, neurodegenerative, immune dysregulation and inflammatory conditions. This study investigates the inflammomodulatory potential of resveratrol (RES), a sirtuin activator and sirtinol (SIR), a sirtuin inhibitor in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced model of sickness behaviour in mice. Male Swiss albino mice were divided into five groups (n = 6) consisting of saline (SAL), LPS, RES, SIR, and fluoxetine (FLU) respectively,

Estimating the sensorimotor components of cybersickness.

The user base of the virtual reality (VR) medium is growing, and many of these users will experience cybersickness. Accounting for the vast interindividual variability in cybersickness forms a pivotal step in solving the issue. Most studies of cybersickness focus on a single factor (e.g., balance, sex, or vection), while other contributors are overlooked. Here, we characterize the complex relationship between cybersickness and several measures of sensorimotor processing. In a single session, we conducted a battery of tests of balance control, vection responses, and vestibular sensitivity to se

Socially isolated individuals are more prone to have newly diagnosed and prevalent type 2 diabetes mellitus - the Maastricht study.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but it is unclear which elements play a crucial role in this association. Therefore, we assessed the associations of a broad range of structural and functional social network characteristics with normal glucose metabolism, pre-diabetes, newly diagnosed T2DM and previously diagnosed T2DM. METHODS: Participants originated from The Maastricht Study, a population-based cohort study (n = 2861, mean age 60.0 ± 8.2 years, 49% female, 28.8% T2DM (oversampled)). Social network characteristics were assessed through a name generator

Association between C-reactive protein (CRP) with depression symptom severity and specific depressive symptoms in major depression.

INTRODUCTION: Population-based studies have associated inflammation, particularly higher C-reactive protein (CRP), with depressive severity, but clinical trials in major depressive disorder were rather non-specific without examining the role of gender. We aimed to investigate the association between CRP and overall depression severity including specific depressive symptoms and to examine potential gender differences. METHODS: We included 231 individuals with major depressive disorder from the Genome-Based Therapeutics Drugs for Depression (GENDEP) study. At baseline, we assessed high-sensitiv

CPS49-induced neurotoxicity does not cause limb patterning anomalies in developing chicken embryos.

Thalidomide notoriously caused severe birth defects, particularly to the limbs, in those exposed in utero following maternal use of the drug to treat morning sickness. How the drug caused these birth defects remains unclear. Many theories have been proposed including actions on the forming blood vessels. However, thalidomide survivors also have altered nerve patterns and the drug is known for its neurotoxic actions in adults following prolonged use. We have previously shown that CPS49, an anti-angiogenic analog of thalidomide, causes a range of limb malformations in a time-sensitive manner in

Restricted application of insecticides: a promising tsetse control technique, but what do the farmers think of it?

BACKGROUND: Restricted application of insecticides to cattle is a cheap and safe farmer-based method to control tsetse. In Western Africa, it is applied using a footbath, mainly to control nagana and the tick Amblyomma variegatum. In Eastern and Southern Africa, it might help controlling the human disease, i.e., Rhodesian sleeping sickness as well. The efficiency of this new control method against ticks, tsetse and trypanosomoses has been demonstrated earlier. The invention, co-built by researchers and farmers ten years ago, became an innovation in Burkina Faso through its diffusion by two dev
