Acamprosate is neuroprotective against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity when enhanced by ethanol withdrawal in neocortical cultures of fetal rat brain.

BACKGROUND: Acamprosate reduces relapse, and the drug may interact with glutamate transmission and with glutamate/NMDA receptors. Because these systems are implicated in excess calcium entry leading to alcohol withdrawal-induced neurotoxicity, we evaluated the effects of acamprosate on these parameters in neuronal cultures. METHODS: Primary cultures of neocortical neurons from fetal Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained either in normal medium or in medium containing 100 mM ethanol for 4 days. After this time, cultures were challenged with glutamate for 10 min and then returned to medium (all i

Neurotoxic effect of acamprosate, n-acetyl-homotaurine, in cultured neurons.

Sprint interval training (SIT) is a potent exercise strategy to enhance athletes' aerobic capacity in a time-efficient manner. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a low-volume court-based SIT program on aerobic capacity and sport-specific endurance performance for competitive tennis players. Sixteen competitive collegiate tennis players were randomly assigned to the SIT (court-based repeated-sprint training) and traditional endurance training (ET; 45-min continuous treadmill running) groups for a 6-week intervention (3 sessions/week). The maximal oxygen uptake ( V ˙ O2max),

The long-term cost-effectiveness of improving alcohol abstinence with adjuvant acamprosate.

A computer model was developed with decision analysis software to explore the long-term clinical and economic outcomes of alcohol abstinence maintenance with either standard counselling therapy or standard therapy plus 48 weeks of adjuvant acamprosate in detoxified alcoholic patients. Important complications of alcoholism were modelled using Markov processes, and included relapse (return to drinking), alcohol-related hepatic disease, acute and chronic pancreatitis, acute and chronic gastritis, oropharyngeal carcinoma, oesophageal carcinoma, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, alcohol-related peripheral

Lack of psychotomimetic or impairing effects on psychomotor performance of acamprosate.

The possible effects on psychomotor performance, concentration, attention, and mood of acamprosate (calciumacetylhomotaurinate) were assessed using a randomized, double-blind, cross-over, placebo-controlled design involving 12 healthy male volunteers. Acamprosate 2 g daily per os or placebo was administered for seven days and separated by washout intervals of at least 21 days. Objective tests evaluated psychomotor functions (simple reaction time measurement, binary choice reaction test, computerized visual searching task, sustained attention test). Mood was assessed using the Beck Depression I

Bile acid excretion after pull-through operation for Hirschsprung's disease.

Four children with chronic diarrhoea and perianal excoriation after a pull-through operation for Hirschsprung's disease have been shown to have increased but not markedly raised levels of faecal bile acids. Bile acid analysis of the 'bile-rich' duodenal fluid obtained after pancreozymin stimulation in 3 of the patients indicated a marked reduction in the proportion of deoxycholic acid conjugates. These findings are compatible with colonic malabsorption of secondary bile acids in these patients which is related in some way to the pull-through operation, but which is not likely to be the cause o

Amino Acid Nutrition for Optimum Growth, Development, Reproduction, and Health of Zoo Animals.

Proteins are large polymers of amino acids (AAs) linked via peptide bonds, and major components for the growth and development of tissues in zoo animals (including mammals, birds, and fish). The proteinogenic AAs are alanine, arginine, aspartate, asparagine, cysteine, glutamate, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, and valine. Except for glycine, they are all present in the L-isoform. Some carnivores may also need taurine (a nonproteinogenic AA) in their diet. Adequate dietary intakes of AAs are…
