Evaluating Punica granatum mediated AgNPs acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus microplus and Sarcoptes scabiei using in vitro and in silico analyses.

Sarcoptic mange and tick infestations caused by Sarcoptes scabiei and Rhipicephalus microplus are growing veterinary and economic concerns globally. Resistance against traditional acaricides, coupled with growing concern for the environment, calls for the development of alternative control strategies. The current study aimed to develop and evaluate the acaricidal activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using a green methodology that involved the leaf extracts of Punica granatum. The AgNPs were characterized using UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron …

Health Status and Drivers of Endoparasite Infection in a Low-Density Moose (Alces alces) Population.

At their southern range limits in North America, moose (Alces alces) experience increased overlap with white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and associated parasites through shared habitat use. Moose persist at low densities in New York state, USA, and are incidental hosts to multiple pathogenic endoparasites. Understanding the contributions of endoparasitism to moose morbidity and mortality requires investigation into their health status and drivers of parasite infection. We summarized health data from 60 live-captured and 191 opportunistically necropsied moose (spanning 2000-23) and use

Molecular Detection and Genetic Diversity of Bat-Associated Bartonella spp. in Bat Ectoparasites Collected From Ratchaburi Province, Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Bats are known to harbour Bartonella bacteria, which can be found in several species of bats. Various ectoparasites can infest bats and harbour the bacteria, serving as important vectors for diverse Bartonella species. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of Bartonella spp. in bat ectoparasites, as well as to identify the species of ectoparasites involved. METHODS: Bat ectoparasites were collected from four species of insectivorous bats in Ratchaburi, central Thailand. The ectoparasites were identified using the Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (bat fli

Progression of deltamethrin resistance in Rhipicephalus microplus populations on communal farms of South Africa.

This study was conducted to assess the progression of deltamethrin resistance in Rhipicephalus (B.) microplus populations over a 5-year period, from 2019 to 2023, on selected communal farms in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Ticks were collected from three communal farms with a documented history of deltamethrin resistance in R. (B.) microplus populations in 2019. The sampled tick populations were tested for resistance using the adult immersion test (AIT). The data generated from the AIT indicated deltamethrin resistance, with oviposition inhibition percentages ≤ 95% at both the manuf

Resistance intensity test (RIT): a novel bioassay for quantifying the level of acaricide resistance in Rhipicephalus microplus ticks.

BACKGROUND: One bioassay for detecting acaricide resistance in livestock ticks is the adult immersion test (AIT), wherein engorged ticks are briefly immersed into a solution of a particular acaricidal compound and examined for mortality, their egg-laying capacity and offspring hatchability in vitro. Usually, the recommended label dose or an established discriminating dose of an acaricide is used to determine high mortality (≥ 95%) of susceptible tick strains. Such a test intends to detect the presence of resistance in a tick population. However, the adult immersion test does not directly trans

Effects of physical impairments on fitness correlates of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus.

Physical impairments are widely assumed to reduce the viability of individual animals, but their impacts on individuals within natural populations of vertebrates are rarely quantified. By monitoring wild populations of white-footed mice over 26 years, we assessed whether missing or deformed limbs, tail or eyes influenced the survival, body mass, movement and ectoparasite burden of their bearers. Of the 27 244 individuals monitored, 543 (2%) had visible physical impairments. Persistence times (survival) were similar between mice with and without impairments. Mice with eye and tail impairments h

Detection of DNA of Babesia canis in tissues of laboratory rodents following oral inoculation with infected ticks.

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are apicomplexan parasites which infect a wide range of mammalian hosts. Historically, most Babesia species were described based on the assumed host specificity and morphological features of the intraerythrocytic stages. New DNA-based approaches challenge the traditional species concept and host specificity in Babesia. Using such tools, the presence of Babesia DNA was reported in non-specific mammalian hosts, including B. canis in feces and tissues of insectivorous bats, opening questions on alternative transmission routes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate

Enduring Challenge of Invasive Ticks: Introduction of Amblyomma oblongoguttatum (Acari: Ixodidae) into the United States on a Human Traveler Returning from Central America.

Introduction of exotic tick vectors of bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and filarial parasites into the United States has accelerated in recent years, primarily because of globalization, increased frequency of travel, and a rise in legal and illegal animal trades. We herein report introduction of a live specimen of Amblyomma oblongoguttatum on a human into the United States from Central America, and we review 4 previous similar incidents. This tick species occurs widely in the neotropics, from western and southern Mexico, southwards through Central America, to the northern half of South America. I

Factors affecting abundance of different stages of the endophilic tick Ixodes anatis in brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) shelters.

Ixodes anatis is a species of endophilic (nidicolous) tick species parasitizing brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli). Even though they are endemic to New Zealand like their host, very little is known about these ticks or their population dynamics and relationships with their hosts. We conducted a study from May 2013 to June 2014 to evaluate the effect of shelter location (one of three gullies), habitat (forest, scrub and pasture) and type (tree, soil and surface) on the abundance of the different life stages of I. anatis. In total, 12,172 ticks were collected from 63 shelters, which were sampled mont

Integrative taxonomy of Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae).

Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) ticks are revised based on qualitative morphology of females and nymphs, as well as tarsus I shape outlines of females measured in a geometric morphometric framework. These lines of evidence corroborate lineages based on 16S rRNA nucleotide sequence data. Four previously unrecognized species are described, along with a revived nomen nudum that was previously considered a synonym. Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) now comprise ten species. Ornithodoros moubata and Ornithodoros porcinus are separated from three other species in southern Africa (Orn

Rickettsia helvetica in Human-Parasitizing and Free-Living Ixodes ricinus from Urban and Wild Green Areas in the Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy.

Rickettsia helvetica is an emerging human pathogen, belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, associated with generally aneruptive fever, meningitis, and sudden death in chronic perimyocarditis. In this study, we describe the detection of R. helvetica in human-parasitizing and free-living Ixodes ricinus from the Metropolitan City of Rome. The pathogen was found in a tick acquired by a woman in an urban park. The circulation of R. helvetica was further confirmed by its detection in free-living ticks from a wild green area. These findings demonstrate that urban as well as wild gree

Preliminary investigation of ixodid ticks in Jiangxi Province of Eastern China.

In recent years, a large effort has been made for tick surveys for public health importance around China, especially after outbreaks of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) occurred in humans in 2009. In this paper, the preliminary species composition and population distribution of ticks in Jiangxi Province of Eastern China is reported. Ticks were collected in three habitats (grassland, shrubs and woodland) and from nine host groups in 12 sampling sites throughout Jiangxi Province between 2011 and 2018. Six tick species including Haemaphysalis longicornis, Rhipicephalus sanguineu

Serologic assessment for exposure to spotted fever group rickettsiae in dogs in the Arizona-Sonora border region.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a severe tick-borne rickettsial illness. In the south-western United States and Mexico, RMSF displays unique epidemiologic and ecologic characteristics, including Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (brown dog tick) as the primary vector. Expansion and spread of the disease from hyperendemic regions of Arizona or Mexico to new areas is a key public health concern. Dogs are thought to play an important role in the emergence and circulation of R. rickettsii in these regions and are often one of earliest indicators of RMSF presence. A canine serosurvey was c

The effect of excluding ungulates on the abundance of ixodid ticks on wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Tick abundance depends heavily on host density, so reducing access to the host should reduce tick populations in a determined area. In this study we compared the Parasitic Index (PI = average number of ticks per rabbit) of two wild rabbit populations separated 16 years ago by a fence keeping ungulates from moving freely. Two areas were selected (closed and open) wherein 50 wild rabbits per area were sampled for ticks. The PI in the open area (PI = 989.62) was significantly higher than in the closed area (PI = 515.40). Hyalomma lusitanicum Koch was globally the most abundant species, followed b
