Early complications and performance of 327 heat-pressed lithium disilicate crowns up to five years.

PURPOSE: The prospective follow-up aimed to assess the performance of lithium disilicate crowns and clinical reasons of adverse events compromising survival and quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 58 patients were treated with 375 heat-pressed monolithic crowns, which were bonded with resin cement. Annual recalls up to five years included a complete dental examination as well as quality assessment using CDA-criteria. Any need for clinical intervention led to higher complication rate and any failure compromised the survival rate. Kaplan-Meier-method was applied to all crowns and a dataset containi

A clinical survey of removable partial dentures. --Analysis of follow-up examinations over a sixteen-year period--.

In order to carry out the proper prosthetic treatment, it is necessary to select the method of treatment on the basis of accurate information concerning the prognosis of the prosthetic appliance. The oral structures are particularly proved to change when partial dentures are being used because the structures of the partial dentures are quite complex and they are easily broken. Therefore, in an attempt to analyze the changes that occur in the oral structures and partial dentures after insertion of the partial dentures, we conducted 3 series of follow-up examinations. The author sent out questio

Management of awake bruxism: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Awake bruxism is a masticatory muscle activity reported by approximately one in four individuals in the general population. Bruxism can have various manifestations such as tooth clenching, grinding or bracing, with different possible clinical consequences, ranging from tooth wear and fractures of dental restorations to orofacial pain related to the musculoskeletal overload. However, no official guidelines exist on the management of awake bruxism. The aim of this systematic review was to review published literature on management of awake bruxism. METHODS: The review followed the PRI

Prenatal exposure to environmental toxins and comprehensive dental findings in a population cohort of children.

Environmental toxins are known to have many impacts on growth and development in humans, starting in utero. Alterations in amelogenesis, caused by chemical and physical trauma that occur during the antenatal, perinatal and postnatal time periods, may result in developmental defects in deciduous and permanent tooth enamel, as demonstrated in animal studies. These defects can be clinically visible and result in a variety of morphological and functional problems in the dentition. Since enamel does not remodel after formation, it may serve as a permanent record of insults during organ development.

The hierarchical nature of mammalian tooth enamel resilience, and a novel measure of decussational strength in human molars.

The resilience of mammalian tooth enamel to fatigue and fracture stems from its anisotropic structure, which is manifest at various hierarchical levels from the nanoscale to the macroscale. At the nanoscale level, the alignment trajectories of thin hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and the organic matrix serve to convey anisotropy and deformability. Various prism packing configurations provide additional structural heterogeneity at the microscale level, while at the mesoscale, the angles at which parazonal and diazonal prisms decussate furnish yet more structural incongruity. At the macroscale level

Changes in polymerization stress of self-adhesive resin composites during water storage.

BackgroundResin composite restorations exhibit dimensional changes in the oral environment due to polymerization reaction and/or water sorption, which generates stresses in the surrounding tooth structures. The state of stress may differ between self-adhesive resin composites (SARCs) and conventional resin composites because only SARCs contain hydrophilic monomers.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of water sorption on polymerization stresses of SARCs.MethodsCracks were introduced near a cylindrical hole in a glass disk, and their lengths were measured. Chewing performance and the structure of primate communities.

Ecomorphological theory predicts a relationship between the morphology of a given trait and its ecological performance. In turn, variation in ecomorphology is viewed as integral to the structuring of animal communities. This reasoning is practically axiomatic, but the full logic chain is seldom integrated into a single study. We tested the functional relationship between premolar tooth size and chewing performance across a diverse community of wild primates, including chimpanzees and seven monkey species. We found that relatively large premolars were associated with improved food fracture, and

Interleukin-10 inhibits bone resorption: a potential therapeutic strategy in periodontitis and other bone loss diseases.

Periodontitis and other bone loss diseases, decreasing bone volume and strength, have a significant impact on millions of people with the risk of tooth loss and bone fracture. The integrity and strength of bone are maintained through the balance between bone resorption and bone formation by osteoclasts and osteoblasts, respectively, so the loss of bone results from the disruption of such balance due to increased resorption or/and decreased formation of bone. The goal of therapies for diseases of bone loss is to reduce bone loss, improve bone formation, and then keep healthy bone density. Curre

Hierarchical structures in mammalian enamel from synchrotron X-ray computed tomography.

Many natural and biological materials exhibit intricate hierarchical architectures to effectively manage crack propagation and fracture. This enables them to overcome the critical trade-off between strength and toughness that plagues modern ceramics and ceramic composites. This study investigates the microstructure of enamel from five different mammalian species to inform the synthesis of strong, fracture-resistant bioinspired materials. Dental enamel, the hard, outer surface layer of teeth, is renowned for its exceptional damage tolerance and high strength. Enamel can withstand cracks and oth

Pre-Sealing of Endodontic Access Cavities for the Preservation of Anterior Teeth Fracture Resistance.

OBJECTIVE: Sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl) is an effective canal irrigant but interferes with the mechanical features of dentin and the bonding capability of adhesives when restoring endodontically treated teeth. This study evaluated whether access cavity resin sealing before using canal irrigant would augment the resistance of endodontically treated anterior teeth against fracture. METHODS: Sixty maxillary incisors underwent endodontic treatment in five groups (n = 12). Irrigation with 5.25% NaOCl and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was performed in all groups except for Grou

Failing before starting: when not to do endodontics.

It's a fact: Perfect endodontic treatment can be unsuccessful. Unfortunately, endodontic failure often can result from an inadequate preliminary diagnosis or prognosis assessment. Many variables should be considered before endodontic treatment begins, including assessing the endodontic case, addressing periodontal concerns, determining restorative issues, and detecting root fractures. If these parameters are not evaluated carefully, then short- or long-term endodontic failure will result. Unfortunately, an endodontic prognosis assessment is often subjective. Although dentists must rely on evid
