BACKGROUND: To examine the risk factors for an early postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) increase after ab interno trabeculotomy using a Kahook Dual Blade (KDB trabeculotomy).
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in 76 exfoliation glaucoma (EXG) eyes and 56 primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes that underwent KDB trabeculotomy, with or without cataract surgery at Kumamoto University Hospital. Postoperative high IOP was classified as IOP≥20 mmHg (within three months after surgery, whether persistent or temporary), transient IOP≥20 mmHg (IOP≥20 mmHg after surgery, then dropped be

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of adjunctive selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in reducing 24-h intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations and nocturnal IOP peaks.
METHODS: In this prospective interventional case series, 157 medically treated eyes of 157 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) who were assigned SLT to further reduce IOP were consecutively included. Each patient had a complete glaucoma work-up and 24-h IOP monitoring (6 measurements, including one in the supine position) taken before and on average 6 months after SLT. The main outcome measures were the reductio

PRCIS: Decreasing aqueous outflow resistance at trabecular meshwork is the main mechanism of modified 360-degree suture trabeculotomy (ST), and the preoperative C-value, which shows aqueous outflow resistance, is likely to be useful for predicting intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction.
PURPOSE: To clarify the mechanism of IOP reduction and the preoperative prognostic predictor of modified 360-degree ST.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-three eyes of 32 patients with glaucoma who underwent ST at Hokkaido University Hospital between April 2017 and February 2020 were enrolled. The records of postope

PURPOSE: In patients with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) causes abnormal eye growth. This study compared the outcomes of children with PCG who underwent ab externo trabeculotomy (TROC) at age ≤ 6 months (early TROC) and of those who underwent TROC at age > 6 months (delayed TROC).
METHODS: Intraocular pressure, horizontal corneal diameter (HCD), central corneal thickness (CCT) and axial length (AL) were compared before TROC and at 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up visits between the groups of children who underwent TROC until or after 6 months of age. T

Large avascular blebs need to be repaired especially if they are associated with leaks or have had episodes of bleb-related infections. We describe a new technique of using an amniotic membrane graft, that is inserted into the bleb through a small incision, helping to reduce the size of the avascularity, providing support to the bleb, and preventing extraneous infections.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the commonest cause of irreversible blindness in Nigeria and raised intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only modifiable risk factor. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), one of the treatment modalities, has been reported to have a cross-over effect on the fellow untreated eyes.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the lOP lowering effect of SLT on the contralateral untreated eyes in patients with primary open angle glaucoma.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent SLT at Guinness Eye Centre, Lagos from June 2011-June 2012. Information on bio-data,

Non-penetrating glaucoma surgery was primarily developed as an alternative to the widely applied trabeculectomy. Since the anterior chamber in non-penetrating surgery is not directly opened, common postoperative complications such as hypotony are rare. The most frequently applied technique in this group is the deep sclerectomy. After having prepared a superficial scleral flap a deeper scleral flap is performed and excised unroofing Schlemm's canal. The trabecular meshwork is then peeled leaving a residual trabeculodescemet membrane. As a consequence aqueous humour diffuses via the trabeculodes…

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) for patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG). In this retrospective case series, 85 eyes (48 POAG, 37 PXG) of 85 patients were investigated. The medical records of patients who underwent SLT for POAG or PXG were reviewed. The main outcome measures included intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effect and ocular side effects. The mean decrease in IOP differed significantly (p < 0.001) between eyes with POAG (-4.4 ± 2.1 mmHg) and eyes with PXG (-6.1

BACKGROUND: Reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) is still the primary goal of glaucoma treatment. The aim of this prospective study was to examine the IOP lowering effect of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) in patients on maximum tolerated medical therapy (MTMT), especially with regard to a potential influence of pseudophakia and topical prostaglandin analogues (PGA) on IOP reduction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with a diagnosis of primary open angle glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma with uncontrolled IOP despite MTMT underwent SLT treat

Lasers have been used in the treatment of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) over the years, with the hope that they would eventually replace medical and surgical therapy. Laser trabeculoplasty (LT) is an application of argon, diode, or selective laser energy to the surface of the trabecular meshwork to increase the aqueous outflow. The mechanisms by which intraocular pressure (IOP) is lowered could be mechanical, biologic, or by division of adjacent cells. It is commonly used as an adjunct to medical therapy, but is contraindicated if the angle is obstructed, e.g., peripheral anterior synechi

A patient with uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma underwent selective laser trabeculoplasty and developed a significant anterior chamber reaction, shallow anterior chamber, and choroidal effusion. Common complications associated with selective laser trabeculoplasty include conjunctival injection, mild anterior chamber reaction, and post-treatment intraocular pressure elevation. The authors believe this is the first reported case of severe iritis and choroidal effusion following selective laser trabeculoplasty.
