Efficacy of sucrose to reduce pain in premature infants during eye examinations for retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Eye examinations for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are painful to the neonate. The use of topical anesthetic for eye examinations to evaluate ROP is routine in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), but does not completely suppress painful responses. Sweet solutions have been shown to reduce procedural pain in newborns. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the addition of sucrose 24% to topical anesthetic improves procedural pain control during the ROP eye examination. METHODS: Neonates born at < or = 30 weeks' gestation were included in this placebo-controlled, double-blind, cross

Early detection of preschool health problems--role of perinatal risk factors.

To evaluate a perinatal risk-grouping system, 1 262 4-year-old children went through a comprehensive health examination. A total of 41.5% of the newborns were included in the wide criteria of risk, which were more common among boys and among children of the youngest and oldest mothers. Among the 4-year-old, the frequency of significant physical health problem was 15.8%, including 10.1% visual disturbances and 2% neurological disorders. In some combinations of risk groups and later health problems there were statistically significant correlations, e.g. regarding prematurity and cerebral irritat

Assessment of pigmented skin lesions in terms of blood perfusion estimates.

The rising prevalence of vision-threatening eye diseases poses a major global health and economic burden, yet timely diagnosis remains limited by workforce shortages, diagnostic delays, and restricted access to specialized care. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential solutions. In particular, recent progress in foundation models and large language models-especially multimodal large language models (MLLMs)-has shown promise in medical image interpretation and automated clinical documentation. However, advancing MLLMs for ophthalmology is hindered by the lack of unified, comprehensive ben

Comparisons of Handheld Retinal Imaging with Optical Coherence Tomography for the Identification of Macular Pathology in Patients with Diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Handheld retinal imaging cameras are relatively inexpensive and highly portable devices that have the potential to significantly expand diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening, allowing a much broader population to be evaluated. However, it is essential to evaluate if these devices can accurately identify vision-threatening macular diseases if DR screening programs will rely on these instruments. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the detection of diabetic macular pathology using monoscopic macula-centered images using mydriatic handheld retinal imaging compared with spe

Long-term metformin therapy and vitamin B12 deficiency: An association to bear in mind.

To date, metformin remains the first-line oral glucose-lowering drug used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes thanks to its well-established long-term safety and efficacy profile. Indeed, metformin is the most widely used oral insulin-sensitizing agent, being prescribed to more than 100 million people worldwide, including patients with prediabetes, insulin resistance, and polycystic ovary syndrome. However, over the last decades several observational studies and meta-analyses have reported a significant association between long-term metformin therapy and an increased prevalence of vitamin B12

Cataract and retinopathy: screening for treatable retinopathy.

Diabetes causes cataract and certain physical changes in the lens. The diabetic lens is larger than the non-diabetic and shows greater light scatter and fluorescence. Both hyperglycaemia and lowering of blood glucose case refractive changes and hypermetropia is the most common. Classical 'snow-flake' juvenile cataract associated with hyperglycaemia is now rare. It has an osmotic mechanism. Diabetes is a risk factor for cataract in adults which is duration dependent, more frequent in women and leads to earlier surgery. It resembles non-diabetic senile cataract. Extracapsular cataract extraction

Assessment of Correlation Between Diabetic Retinopathy and Metabolic Biomarkers Using Artificial Intelligence.

BACKGROUND: One of the main causes of blindness in the world, diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a dangerous condition that impairs vision in diabetics. Preventing visual loss requires early recognition of DR and prompt treatments. Artificial intelligence (AI) software combined with nonmydriatic fundus cameras has demonstrated encouraging gains in DR screening effectiveness. However, there are not many studies that systematically compare the diagnostic effectiveness of various nonmydriatic cameras and AI software in the field of endocrinology, where managing diabetes and its complications is crucial

A Multi-Task Deep Learning Framework for Characterizing Beating Behavior and Synchrony in Cardiomyocyte Clusters.

Beat-level synchrony among cardiomyocyte clusters is a critical indicator of cardiac electromechanical function. Traditional invasive approaches have substantial limitations, and conventional computer vision methods are poorly suited for resolving densely packed, adherent clusters. To address these challenges, we developed an analysis framework to characterize the beating characteristics of cardiomyocyte clusters from microscopic imaging data. Specifically, we propose CardioSegNet, a multi-task deep learning model that combines attention mechanisms with three prediction heads (semantic segment
