Effect of gain- and loss-framed messages on women's responses to negative family cancer history screening results: A randomized online trial.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether gain- versus loss-framed messages affect women's responses to negative family cancer history (FCH) screening results, and whether these effects differ by race. METHODS: From March to April 2025, we conducted a two-arm parallel-group randomized online trial of message framing (gain vs. loss), stratified by race (Black, non-Hispanic vs. non-Black), among U.S. women aged 40 years and older who screened negative on FCH (N = 655) recruited through the Ipsos nationally representative consumer panel. Participants were blinded to message-framing condition, completed a ba

Implementation of a Program to Enhance Cognitive Reserve in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis (EM Reserva Program).

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) may help mitigate cognitive decline in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS); however, few interventions have targeted CR enhancement, and none have focused on individuals without baseline cognitive impairment. The EM Reserva program is a multimodal intervention that combines cognitive leisure activities, aerobic exercise, and structured social engagement and is designed to strengthen CR in individuals with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). METHODS: This pragmatic, single-center, observer-blinded randomized controlled trial included PwMS aged 18-55 years with R

Predicting Brain Amyloid Status Using the National Institute of Health Toolbox (NIHTB) for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque is a neuropathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies enter the market, predicting brain amyloid status is critical to determine treatment eligibility. OBJECTIVE: To predict brain amyloid status utilizing machine learning approaches in the Advancing Reliable Measurement in Alzheimer's Disease and Cognitive Aging (ARMADA) study. DESIGN: ARMADA is a multisite study that implemented the National Institute of Health Toolbox for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function (NIHTB) in older adults with differen

Executive cognitive dysfunction and ADHD in cocaine dependence: searching for a common cognitive endophenotype for addictive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine-dependent individuals (CDI) present executive cognitive function (ECF) deficits, but the impact of psychiatric comorbidities such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on neuropsychological functioning is still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate if CDI with ADHD (CDI + ADHD) would have a distinct pattern of executive functioning when compared with CDI without ADHD (CDI). METHODS: We evaluated 101 adults, including 69 cocaine-dependent subjects (divided in CDI and CDI + ADHD) and 32 controls. ECF domains were assessed with Digits Forwar

The effects of lead exposure on urban children: the Institute of Child Health/Southampton Study.

A study of the associations between level of tooth lead, behaviour, intelligence and a variety of other psychological skills was carried out in the child population aged six to seven years in three London boroughs. Tooth lead was estimated from the chemical analysis of shed teeth donated by children. 2663 (62.4 per cent) of the eligible children donated teeth. A study of the total population was carried out to see if those who donated teeth were representative of that population. There were small but consistent and statistically significant differences--tooth-givers being of slightly higher in

Gender differences in HIV and hepatitis C related vulnerabilities among aboriginal young people who use street drugs in two Canadian cities.

OBJECTIVES: Vulnerability to HIV and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection for indigenous populations worldwide must be contextualized in experiences of current and past trauma. Aboriginal women entrenched in poverty face further gender-specific harms which place them at increased risk for HIV infection. METHODS: This study was cross-sectional and based on a community-based sample of Aboriginal young people (Metis, Aboriginal, First Nations, Inuit, and non-status Indians) between the ages of 14 and 30 years who used injection or non-injection non-cannabis illegal drugs (street drugs) in the previ

Nine years of maintenance treatment with ranitidine for patients with duodenal ulcer disease.

Four hundred and sixty-four patients with duodenal ulcer disease received continuous maintenance treatment with ranitidine for up to 9 years. Treatment failure was defined as either the first symptomatic recurrence of ulcer or the first ulcer recurrence accompanied by haemorrhage. Life tables were constructed using the Kaplan-Meier product-limit method; comparisons of survival curves were performed using the log-rank test; and multivariate analysis was carried out using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results. The proportion of patients remaining free from symptomatic recurrence of ulcer d

Treatment of acute or chronic severe, intractable pain and other intractable medical problems associated with unrecognized viral or bacterial infection: Part I.

In many cases of chronic intractable pain without any discernible causes, when both Western medical treatment and acupuncture treatment failed to eliminate the pain, this pain is often due to the unrecognized presence of viral or bacterial infection. Even effective anti-viral or bacterial agents often fail to eliminate or inhibit the infection, as these drugs may also fail to reach the most painful area where often unrecognizable circulatory disturbances co-exist. Using the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test Molecular Identification Method, we were able to localize substance P and thromboxane B2 (a good i

Longitudinal outcomes of auditory and spoken language skills following unilateral and bilateral cochlear implantation in children and young adults with inner ear malformations.

INTRODUCTION: Severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss significantly impairs spoken language acquisition and cognitive development. Cochlear implants (CIs) bypass damaged inner ear structures to directly stimulate the cochlear nerve and represent an effective rehabilitation strategy. Inner ear malformations (IEMs) are frequently associated with congenital hearing loss; however, the influence of anatomical variability on postoperative functional outcomes remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the longitudinal trajectories of auditory skills, spoken language development

Longitudinal Evaluation of Auditory and Speech Performance in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients Using IT-MAIS, MESP, CAP, and SIR Scales.

Considerable variability in auditory and speech outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients has raised ongoing debate regarding whether early auditory perception directly determines later speech intelligibility, particularly in tonal language environments where pitch cues are critical for communication. This longitudinal study evaluated 64 prelingually deaf children aged 1-5 years over 12 months following unilateral implantation, integrating four standardized behavioral scales-the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS), Categories of Auditory Performance (

Testicular Torsion in Inguinal Cryptorchidism: Report on Two Patients and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Undescended testis (UT) is a common congenital urological condition in boys, with an incidence of 2-8%. Orchiopexy is the recommended surgical treatment for UT, ideally performed before 12 months of age, with a latest window of 18 months. Testicular torsion (TT) is a pediatric urological emergency, occurring in 3.8 per 100,000 boys. While both UT and TT are common conditions individually, their co-occurrence in children under 18 months is rare and represents a challenging clinical scenario, especially when diagnosis and treatment are delayed, increasing the risk of testi

Risk factors and outcomes of immune and non-immune causes of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage: a tertiary-care academic single-center experience.

Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a rare but potentially life-threatening emergency that has both immune and non-immune etiologies. The objective of this investigation was to compare the risk factors and outcomes of immune and non-immune causes of DAH at a tertiary-care academic center. This was a retrospective observational study conducted at a University center. We reviewed all chest radiographs spanning 12 years (2007-2019) at our institute with the words "diffuse alveolar hemorrhage" in the body of their report, and ascertained cases of DAH through a detailed chart review. We used Chi-s

Development and content validation of two new patient-reported outcome measures for endometriosis: the Endometriosis Symptom Diary (ESD) and Endometriosis Impact Scale (EIS).

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common, chronic, impactful condition in women of reproductive age. In the absence of established sensitive and specific biomarkers, disease severity is determined by patient-reported symptoms and impacts. This article details the development of two new patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures designed to assess efficacy endpoints in clinical studies: The Endometriosis Symptom Diary (ESD) and the Endometriosis Impact Scale (EIS). METHODS: The ESD and EIS were developed according to best practice and scientific standards (including the Food and Drug Administration

Does bilingualism increase brain or cognitive reserve in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy?

OBJECTIVE: Bilingual healthy adults have been shown to exhibit an advantage in executive functioning (EF) that is associated with microstructural changes in white matter (WM) networks. Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) often show EF deficits that are associated with WM compromise. In this study, we investigate whether bilingualism can increase cognitive reserve and/or brain reserve in bilingual patients with TLE, mitigating EF impairment and WM compromise. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging was obtained in 19 bilingual and 26 monolingual patients with TLE, 12 bilingual healthy control

Cochlear implantation in far-advanced otosclerosis: hearing results and complications.

Severe forms of otosclerosis known as far-advanced otosclerosis (FAO) can lead to severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss and can justify cochlear implantation. Because of the pathophysiology of otosclerosis, patients implanted for FAO may experience an increased rate of complications, such as facial nerve stimulation or electrode dislocation, and may have poorer hearing outcomes than expected. This retrospective study aimed to compare cochlear implantation hearing outcomes, surgical difficulties and complications in FAO patients versus non-FAO patients. Moreover, we evaluated whether hi

Tumor control after surgery for spinal myxopapillary ependymomas: distinct outcomes in adults versus children: a systematic review.

OBJECT: Myxopapillary ependymomas (MPEs) are rare WHO Grade I tumors found in the conus medullaris, cauda equina, and filum terminale. Treatment generally consists of resection with or without adjuvant radiotherapy. Evidence-based guidelines for surgical management are lacking due to the rarity of this tumor. METHODS: An English-language PubMed search was performed using the key words "myxopapillary" and "ependymoma." Reports describing fewer than 3 patients or those lacking data on the extent of resection or radiotherapy were excluded. A total of 28 articles describing 475 patients met the a

Endocrine side effects induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors.

CONTEXT: In recent years, progress has been made in cancer immunotherapy by the development of drugs acting as modulators of immune checkpoint proteins, such as the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA4) and programmed death-1 (PD-1), two co-inhibitory receptors that are expressed on T cells upon activation. These molecules play crucial roles in maintaining immune homeostasis by down-regulating T-cell signaling, thereby preventing unbridled T-cell proliferation while maintaining tolerance to self-antigens, such as tumor-associated antigens. CTLA4 blockade through systemic administration of t

Predicting memory decline from left temporal lobe epilepsy surgery using preoperative fMRI: a multicenter study.

OBJECTIVE: While fMRI language laterality has been used to predict verbal memory after epilepsy surgery, supporting evidence is not yet definitive. The FMRI in Anterior Temporal Epilepsy Surgery (FATES) project was a prospective observational cohort study at 10 US epilepsy centers, performed to determine whether a multivariable model including fMRI language laterality can predict verbal memory outcome 6 months after left temporal lobe epilepsy surgery. METHODS: This analysis includes 70 adults who underwent left temporal lobe epilepsy surgeries including hippocampal resection for treatment of
