Do vegetated rooftops attract more mosquitoes? Monitoring disease vector abundance on urban green roofs.

Green roof, an increasingly common constituent of urban green infrastructure, can provide multiple ecosystem services and mitigate climate-change and urban-heat-island challenges. Its adoption has been beset by a longstanding preconception of attracting urban pests like mosquitoes. As more cities may become vulnerable to emerging and re-emerging mosquito-borne infectious diseases, the knowledge gap needs to be filled. This study gauges the habitat preference of vector mosquitoes for extensive green roofs vis-à-vis positive and negative control sites in an urban setting. Seven sites in a univer

Integrating deep learning and pangenomics to recover missing heritability from wild structural variations.

Crop domestication has induced a severe genetic bottleneck that reduces the adaptive diversity present in modern cultivars. Standard intra-population genomic prediction models reliant on linear reference genomes and SNPs fail to capture the full spectrum of phenotypic variance hidden in wild relatives. Realizing this potential requires broadening the predictive paradigm from selection within narrow breeding populations toward evolutionary-scale inference across the entire wild-to-cultivated continuum. This missing heritability is largely sequestered within complex structural variations such as

Deep forecasting architectures mirror ecological time scales in water quality prediction.

Accurate water quality forecasting-specifically tracking phytoplankton dynamics like chlorophyll a-is crucial for safeguarding aquatic ecosystems and global water security. Deep temporal architectures offer powerful non-linear modeling capabilities, promising to overcome the parameterization bottlenecks of traditional process-based models. However, current applications treat these models as black boxes, leaving it obscure how specific architectural modules interact with the intrinsic ecological time scales governing aquatic environments. Here, we reveal a fundamental architectural-ecological d

Seasonal drivers and infrastructure impacts on dissolved oxygen dynamics in complex environmental systems.

Urban streams are increasingly regulated by the interaction of climate-driven thermal stress and episodic infrastructure disturbances, yet their combined influence on dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics remains insufficiently resolved across temporal scales. This study quantified the combined effects of temperature, hydrology, and combined sewer overflow (CSO) activity on DO across four urban watersheds in Philadelphia, USA, using 12 years of high-frequency monitoring integrated with precipitation, streamflow, and modeled CSO data. A multi-scale framework combining event-stratified comparisons, dis

Wildfire smoke PM2.5 and cancer history prevalence in the contiguous United States.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of wildfire smoke PM2.5 in cancer burden, despite ambient PM2.5 being classified as a human carcinogen. METHODS: Daily wildfire smoke PM2.5 estimates were aggregated into cumulative (2006-2020) and recent (2018-2020) averages, and linked to 2022 tract-level cancer history prevalence estimates for all tracts in the contiguous US. Quasi-Poisson generalized additive models with random effects and spatial splines estimated prevalence ratios and 95% CIs for each exposure window, modeling smoke PM2.5 continuously (per IQR) and across tertiles. Models adjus

Modeling impacts of traffic, air pollution, and weather conditions on cardiopulmonary disease mortality.

AIMS: Cardiopulmonary disease (CPD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Increasing evidence shows that air pollution and exposure to weather conditions have important contributory roles. Understanding the interaction of these factors is difficult due to the complexity of the relationship between CPD, air pollution, and environmental factors. METHODS: This paper uses regression models and machine learning approaches to explore these relationships, and investigate whether meteorological factors and air pollution have a synergistic effect on CPD. We use daily data from 2009-2018 from four cit

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and daily atherosclerotic heart disease mortality in a cool climate.

The associations between exposure to short-term ambient air pollution and daily atherosclerotic heart disease (ASHD) mortality in cool climate have not been established. We performed a time-series analysis in Shenyang, the largest city of Northeastern China. We identified 7659 ASHD deaths and obtained deaths, ambient air pollution levels, and meteorological data for Shenyang during 2014-2017. The impact of ambient air pollution on daily ASHD deaths was analyzed using generalized additive models (GAMs). Cumulative lag effects were investigated using distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM). We

Synergistic Environmental Exposures and the Airways Capturing Complexity in Humans: An Underappreciated World of Complex Exposures.

Paradoxically, the vast majority of research models intended to understand the relationship between exogenous exposures and lung disease are reduced to a single inhalant. This approach is understandable given the practical challenges of investigation, but it is problematic in terms of translation to the real-world human condition. Furthermore, use of data from such models can lead to underestimation of effect, which may adversely influence regulatory imperatives to protect public health based on the most robust information. Efforts to incrementally introduce layers of complexity to observation

Real-time prediction of rain-impacted sewage flow for on-line control of chemical dosing in sewers.

Chemical dosing is a commonly used strategy for mitigating sewer corrosion and odour problems caused by sulfide production. Prediction of sewage flow variation in real-time is critical for the optimization of chemical dosing to achieve cost-effective mitigation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Autoregressive (AR) models have previously been used for real-time sewage prediction. However, the prediction showed significant delays in wet weather conditions. In this paper, autoregressive with exogenous inputs (ARX) models are employed to reduce the delays with rainfall data used as model inputs. The mode

Recent globally synchronous seasonal warm events unprecedented since 850 CE.

Spatially synchronous extreme warm events can amplify environmental and societal impacts by affecting multiple regions simultaneously. However, previous studies have largely focused on June-August (JJA) events during the instrumental period, limiting understanding of their seasonal prevalence and long-term evolution. Here, we examine globally synchronous seasonal warm events (GSSWEs) using seasonal mean near-surface air temperature (SAT) and introduce an Extremity Index (EI) that combines normalized local land SAT anomaly intensity with the spatial extent of land areas exceeding a specified SA

Risk assessment of Panonychus ulmi to global temperate fruit production under climate change.

Climate change is reshaping pest distributions, threatening global fruit production. We present a climate-informed risk assessment for the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi, by integrating its habitat suitability predictions with host crop distributions. Our optimized model identified the mean temperature of the coldest quarter as the primary predictor, highlighting its critical role in P. ulmi overwintering survival. We found that 72.4% of temperate fruit crops are planted in highly suitable habitats for P. ulmi. By the 2070s, this at-risk area is projected to expand to 74.8% under the SSP5-

When There's No November Rain: Developing a Parametric Insurance for Hydroelectric Energy Generators in Brazil.

Hydrological risk is a growing challenge for renewable power systems, as droughts reduce generation, increase costs, and expose gaps in risk-transfer mechanisms. We examine this problem in Brazil, home to the world's sixth-largest electricity system and highly dependent on hydroelectricity, which accounted for 43% of installed generation capacity in 2026. We develop and evaluate a parametric insurance scheme for run-of-river hydroelectric generators indexed to the National System Operator's affluent flow measure. Using monthly energy and climate data from 151 powerplants between 2006 and 2022,

Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Climate Change Impacts on Massive Invasive Plants in Henan Province, China.

Invasive alien plant species have attracted significant global attention due to their profound ecological disruptions and substantial economic losses. As a critical ecological barrier in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, Henan Province has experienced increasing pressure from biological invasions that jeopardize local biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. In this study, we utilized the species distribution modeling framework to predict the potential geographic distributions of 17 massive invasive plant species under current and future climatic conditions. Our findings indicate

Environmental drivers and predictive modeling of E. coli variability in an urban stream using machine learning approaches.

Surface water quality in urban streams is shaped by complex and spatially variable environmental interactions, limiting the effectiveness of conventional monitoring approaches. This study integrates over 25 years of hydrological, climatic, and water quality data with interpretable machine learning to identify key drivers of Escherichia coli variability in the Las Vegas Wash, a wastewater-influenced urban system. Ensemble models revealed distinct spatial controls on microbial dynamics. At the downstream site, electrical conductivity, total dissolved and suspended solids, climate variables, and

Warming exacerbates the effects of pesticides on the soil collembolan gut microbiome and antibiotic resistome.

In the context of global climate warming, studies have yet to fully clarify how pollutants affect the gut microbiome and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in nontarget soil fauna. This study investigates the interactive effects of pesticide exposure (imidacloprid) and elevated temperature on the gut bacterial community and ARGs in the model soil collembolan Folsomia candida. Our results demonstrate warming exacerbates the toxicity of imidacloprid in collembolans. While exposure to both warming and pesticide significantly altered the gut microbial composition of F. candida, impairing microbial

Bridging the predictive divide: A hybrid early warning system for scalable and real-time dengue surveillance in LMICs.

The global resurgence of dengue presents an ongoing challenge for public health systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where conventional early warning systems (EWS) often suffer from reporting delays and under-detection. While AI-powered EWS offer superior accuracy, their reliance on dense data streams and advanced infrastructure limits their scalability in resource-limited contexts. This paper introduces a hybrid EWS architecture that strategically combines retrospective epidemiological data with selective real-time signals-such as climate variables and digital tre

Impact of legal commitments on carbon intensity: A multi-country perspective.

High carbon intensity (CI) contributes to climate change, hindering the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG13). National legal commitments (LC) to reduce carbon emissions can mitigate this obstacle. This study identifies 32 countries with LC to carbon reduction as the treatment group and countries with commitments at other levels (e.g., policy statements) as the control group. Using panel data from 143 countries between 2006 and 2022, the study employs a Difference-in-Differences with multiple time periods (DID-MTP) model to examine the impact of LC on CI. T

Local-scale impacts of extreme events drive demographic asynchrony in neighbouring top predator populations.

Extreme weather events are among the most critical aspects of climate change, but our understanding of their impacts on biological populations remains limited. Here, we exploit the rare opportunity provided by the availability of concurrent longitudinal demographic data on two neighbouring marine top predator populations (the black-browed albatross, Thalassarche melanophris, breeding in two nearby colonies) hit by an exceptionally violent storm during one study year. The aim of this study is to quantify the demographic impacts of extreme events on albatrosses and test the hypothesis that extre

The emergence and shift in seasonality of Lyme borreliosis in Northern Europe.

Climate change has had a major impact on seasonal weather patterns, resulting in marked phenological changes in a wide range of taxa. However, empirical studies of how changes in seasonality impact the emergence and seasonal dynamics of vector-borne diseases have been limited. Lyme borreliosis, a bacterial infection spread by hard-bodied ticks, is the most common vector-borne disease in the northern hemisphere and has been rapidly increasing in both incidence and geographical distribution in many regions of Europe and North America. By analysis of long-term surveillance data (1995-2019) from a

Warming drives sustained plant phosphorus demand in a humid tropical forest.

Phosphorus (P) is often one of the most limiting nutrients in highly weathered soils of humid tropical forests and may regulate the responses of carbon (C) feedback to climate warming. However, the response of P to warming at the ecosystem level in tropical forests is not well understood because previous studies have not comprehensively assessed changes in multiple P processes associated with warming. Here, we detected changes in the ecosystem P cycle in response to a 7-year continuous warming experiment by translocating model plant-soil ecosystems across a 600-m elevation gradient, equivalent
