BACKGROUND: Pathogens with the zoonotic potential to infect humans, such as Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli and Chlamydophila psittaci, can be found in feral pigeons (Columba livia). Given the high density of these birds in the public parks and gardens of most cities, they may pose a direct threat to public health.

The omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defects (OEIS) complex was first described by Carey et al. in 1978. It constitutes a specific combination of malformations. There are very few case reports of discordant OEIS in monozygotic twins and very few reports of OEIS in association with both hypoplastic left heart and ventricular septal defect. Our case represents the fifth reported case of cardiac malformations in a fetus with OEIS complex.

PURPOSE: Patients with cloacal exstrophy have complex anomalies of the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract with a spectrum of colonic length. Often, colon is lost during the initial management by use of ileostomies and for urologic and genital reconstruction. Diagnostic cytology in avian medicine provides a means for better disease definition in the avian patient, which allows for a more specific therapeutic regimen. It is important that cytologic specimens are from fresh sources, since cells degenerate rapidly following the death of the bird or the tissue. Cytologic evaluation is an adjunct to other diagnostic procedures. A definitive diagnosis often requires information from the clinical history, physical examination, evaluation of samples obtained from the bird, radiographs, surgical procedures, necropsy, and histopathology.
