Decline in Dental Fluorosis Severity during Adolescence: A Cohort Study.

Dental fluorosis occurs from overingestion of fluoride during tooth formation. However, there is little evidence in the literature on whether or how fluorosis prevalence and severity change over time after tooth eruption. Permanent dentition dental examinations were conducted at ages 9, 13, 17, and 23 as part of the Iowa Fluoride Study, which has followed a cohort from birth. Fluorosis was assessed using the Fluorosis Risk Index (FRI) and Russell's criteria for differential diagnosis. Measures of fluorosis severity at the person and tooth level were calculated: second highest FRI score at the

Study of the influence of crossbite on the size of the apical area in a child population by analyzing panoramic X-ray.

BACKGROUND: The apical area is the space in the maxillary bones that contains teeth during formation and is subsequently occupied by the apices of the permanent teeth. Its dimensions are easy to perceive and determine by observing a panoramic X-ray. Our objective was to analyze the influence of crossbite on the size of the anterior and mesial apical area in Caucasian children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Based on the ortopantomograph of 353 patients in mixed dentition and crossbite, the sizes of the apical areas of the four hemiarches were studied using the Tps Dig Version 2® computer program. Permanent tooth agenesis in non-syndromic Robin sequence and cleft palate: prevalence and patterns.

OBJECTIVES: Partial tooth agenesis is frequently observed in Robin sequence. Tooth anomalies are increasingly considered as an extended phenotype of the cleft palate population. The study objective was to compare the prevalence and patterns of tooth agenesis in a group of patients with non-syndromic Robin sequence (ns-RS) and a group with non-syndromic cleft palate (ns-CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The panoramic radiographs of 115 ns-RS and 191 ns-CP patients were assessed for agenesis of the permanent dentition (excluding third molars) and the patterns recorded using the Tooth Agenesis Code.

The effect of ethnicity and age on palatal size and shape: a study in a northern Chilean healthy population.

Race and ethnicity influence the form of the human craniofacial complex in varying ways. The aim of the present investigation was to quantify the effects of ethnicity (mestizos, Aymara, non-Aymara), age (adolescents and adults), and sex on the form (size and shape) of the hard palate in normal Native American individuals. From the dental casts of 51 individuals with a complete permanent dentition, the x, y, and z coordinates of several standardized palatal landmarks were obtained with a computerized 3-dimensional digitizer. Palatal landmarks were used to derive a mathematical equation for pala

Late Clinical Manifestations and Documented Management of Infant Oral Mutilation.

BACKGROUND: Infant oral mutilation (IOM) is a traditional practice involving manipulation or removal of unerupted primary tooth buds during infancy. Although its developmental effects on the permanent dentition are well documented, the clinical presentation and management of affected teeth later in life remain insufficiently characterized. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical and radiographic findings and documented management of IOM-affected teeth in a clinically identified cohort of young adults. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with documented IOM ident
